Hi all

a couple of questions about the new Appletv I cant get my head around:

1) Can I stream anything from my Macbook Pro to the Appletv and onto TV?

2) Can I stream from iphones to the Appletv?

I am thinking about getting an appleTV, but as the new ones don't have any storage I was wondering is is better to buy and old one or a new one? I have seen a second hand appleTV for £100 so the price is about the same. I am slightly concerned that the streaming of content might not work, as sometimes when watching BBC iplayer, it stops half way through a show, during a free tv show it is annoying but during a film I have paid to rent would be silly. So would an old modle be better as I would be able to download to rent a film.

On Apple UK store website theres a picture of the Apple TV interface that clearly shows "TV shows". In reality this is not available on the on the UK version of Apple TV. So I've reported the Apple UK store to the ASA for a misleading advert.

Nothing like being TOTALLY wrong and then reporting your error as fact is there??

Both Original and the new Apple TV allow the streaming of content from iTunes (whether your own in mp4/m4v format or purchased) that is categorised as Movies and TV Shows - as well as rented and purchased Movies and TV shows thru the store.

If you use eyetv on your Mac to record TV (PVR style) you can get all your recorded TV and Movies to show up on your Apple TV too...

The major interface change is that on the OLD Apple TV your content (streamed or local) shows up under the sub-headings of My Movies and My TV Shows on the main menu - whereas on the NEW Apple TV this content is found under the computers tab as everything is streamed...

I'd also like to know this.

There is a US review where although there is Film and TV content to rent on itunes, it seems to have the same problems the Google TV box is having getting TV content in the US, whereas Youview in the UK seems to have TV content sorted (except for Sky) before the hardware release!
Also the box is cheaper in the US than the UK at £99, but does seem a good price in the US at $99 compared to the $299 Google TV box!
Quote:
“So what's missing? Quite a bit actually. In terms of channel selection for TV content, right now Apple is limited to partners ABC, Disney, Fox, and the BBC. The company has alluded to more partners in the offing, but right now the pickings are slim. Okay, but maybe you want to play a bunch of your downloaded or ripped content? Well, it better be an M4V, MP4, or MOV file, because you're not getting anything else onto the Apple TV. AVI, DivX, MKV, and a slew of other popular formats are obviously out”

The conclusion
Quote:
“The question is ultimately about ease versus options -- right now it's hard to whole-heartedly recommend the Apple TV even at its $99 price point given the thin list of partners Apple has courted. If you just want a dead simple movie rental box and you're not that picky about content, the Apple TV is a no-brainer. If, like us, you're looking for options good enough to make you can the cable, Apple's new box still feels a lot like a hobby.”
