a device to convert Optical to HDMI? In my eternal quest to not get off my ar$e whilst watching tv, I would like to have some sort of adaptor so I can get SKy HD HDMI and the Optical into one input, with an output to just HDMI with DD5.1 to go into my TV, then connect the TV Optical out to my surround sound, anyone heard of such a thing or is it not feasible?

There is a problem with this.

IF the audio and video signals were completely separate then it would be easy (ish ) but they aren't.

The audio and video data are interlaced into a single stream. So therefore any such device would have to strip out the audio data from the HDMI input and then replace that with the data from the optical input and poke that out of the HDMI output.

A rather more complex and no doubt much more expensive task. Which probably explains why you can't go down Tesco and pick one up with a tin of beans

The TV s/pdif out won't give you a surround sound output from an external input anyway. You only get surround sound from any built in HD tuner

isnt the idea to pass it all though a AV receiver, that can pass non-HDMI stuff out through the HDMI

then you need only one connection from receiver to TV, and the the receiver handles all the switching.

Although these arent entry level facilities

Sit nearer to the TV or use a broom handle or something
