Me too. I don't get the dictionary thing?

coupling - [mass noun] the pairing of two items

pairing - [mass noun] the action of pairing things or people

You can lead a horse to water, but you cannot make it drink.

.....and where does it say that you cant say "couplings" in that article.....or are we only allowed to say what the Beeb tells us to say?

....and one for you......."a drowning man will clutch at a straw"

Grammar nazis

I think she will do a grand job this year, looking forward to watching her and I don't care how she speaks.

Shoot me.

No, definitely not just English. I'm not sure if it's been translated into English but there's a German book with the title "Der Dativ ist dem Genetiv sein Tod" (The dative (case) is the death of the genetive (case)), which basically starts by exploring the fact that the genetive case is dying out in modern German because people hardly use it any more, choosing to get around it by using the dative case instead, as in the title (as in, you could equally say "Der Dativ ist der Tod des Genetivs"). It's the German equivalent of Eats, Shoots and Leaves.

I love the idea that Alesha is deliberately dumbing down for SCD!

Yes, that's the one I meant, thank you for posting the link. France definitely has its share of language issues, just as much as Britain has.

/end of my language geekery thread hijak.

I commented on the BBC POV SCD thread that Alesha spoke 'properly' on Saturday - or rather, the same way she spoke when she took part originally.......

Still cannot accept her as a judge - replace Arlene by all means, but choose someone whose life career has been in dance, not a previous winner.

When she gets excited that's when she screws up eg "You was great".

In any case I'm just looking forward to see my faves this year Jimi Mistry & Felicity & to a certain extent Michelle Willliams.

I was wondering that if Alesha had elocution lessons in how to speak proper 'Joanna Lumley' English, how long would it take for a multitude of threads to appear accusing her of betraying her roots and abandoning her class?

Anyway, what she says and how she says it doesn't really bother me. What does bother me is that I'd personally rather have a dance professional on the panel, and my objections would be the same if it was Gethin or Rachel or Jill, so it's not personal to Alesha

The one thing that does grate with me specifically about Alesha is that last year she encouraged the idiot sitting on her left to be an even bigger idiot than he was before...

Alesha, either pick up your chair and move it or ignore him altogether and I'll be a much happier man

Ahh German grammar. (Of course in some dialects they never bothered with the genitive in the first place!)

I do find it hard to see why people are so preoccupied with the way Alesha speaks, she seems very nice and is a vast improvement on the personal insults that Arleen would wheel out and inflict on dancers every week, Bruno and Craig should take note, as they are already on borrowed time.
