I'm afraid you've suggested that to a fully paid up member of the Love-&-Monsters-don't-see-what-the-problem-is club.

Still, only saw it the once all those years ago. Maybe it's rubbish.

(No, Of course it's not - it's great!)

That's funny - two in a row. I think Web Planet is pretty terrific too! I only found out recently (here) that it's considered poor by many. So ambitious with only the regular cast being humanoid. Lots of nice things in it. Attacking the zarbi, the special way of moving and talking, those excellent guns and a very naughty enemy. Moving when the Menoptera told of what is done to them on capture. I also like the Doctor having a kip at the centre (that bit makes me feel sleepy I'll grant you that.) I will agree that they had more time to fill than story to tell. It must have been difficult to stage.

And, of course, it launched Martin Jarvis into international superstardom in the role that will forever be his and by which most people now remember him. Such a shame to see him mugging away in Eastenders recently. How the mighty have fallen. He must wait by his phone most days for the call to don the wings one more time. (Surely they could have had him in the underhenge? I bet he's still got the costume.)

Erm...feel I should say something proms related. They didn't include O Fortuna did they? (was on the radio 3 broadcast, of course.) You might have been kept awake by that one (or it might have reminded you to buy after shave.) It is, essentially, lots of people shouting at you (though this is not the technical term). Hard to ignore.

Okay, I give up, just take a ruddy sleeping tablet!!!!

And I will politely disagree with you on The Web Planet, let's get back on topic.....

I don't know which one was Fortuna, I loe track of all the names. I didn't listen to the Radio 3 Broadcast and only watched it first time on Friday. All I know is, there were 2 pieces of music which sort of bored me, that's why I zoned out. I'd have to rewatch it to get the names but will probably be alseep again before they even start!!!!!!

Will do!

And it's good to know that there are some things Who fans can always agree upon - which is to disagree about everything.

O Fortuna is short and to the point. It might have been missed off for budgetary reasons because it is not in the public domain. If you want to watch a good film that has this piece in it - Excalibur. For some reason I thought The Omen used it as well (which would have been a grade A Doctor Who link as well), but wiki tells me it was all original Jerry Goldsmith (haven't seen it in years.)

Yes, if we all agreed on everything, this forum would be a boring place!!!!

See if you can find it on YouTube and link it to me if you are able, and indeed want to, no probs if you don't!! I do like The Omen Music, it's well creepy!!!

And I have The Omen Trilogy in my collection, so I'll recognise it, which makes me think they may not have used it or maybe even shown it on Friday.

You have to remember though that was a segment designed for the live audience, not the TV viewer, and it worked superbly well for that. They've also cut out several lines for even the extended version which is a shame (the one about 'ITV being blown off the air... but never mind' in particular, and Matt looking for the autocue) but when you were there it worked perfectly.

After having seen both the extended and regular versions I've got to say the extended is vastly superior IMO. The links between pieces have been mostly restored (although leaving out the fish custard joke was a major downer as Karen gave such a lovely delivery on that), the extra pieces all work and it's just a far more rounded product that doesn't feel as rushed as the regular version. That being said both are still some way short of a full representation and I'm hoping that they're saving that for the Blu-Ray release we all know is coming at some point. Very glad they put it on TV, even happier that we got to see it live.

A fan made trailer for Excalibur with O Fortuna music. Warning: The film is a bit gory and so is this montage:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rA8MeJFRh04

A very good film which somehow survives some unintentionally hilarious bits. I don't know any Who connections (there are Star Trek and Star Wars ones), but this is on topic because anyone at the concert and listening on radio 3 would have heard this. It's the most famous piece from Carmina Burana which is worth a listen. The individual pieces are short and, of course, for voice, so not as "boring" as a symphony.

Thank you, dear Nebo, for reminding me that I love Carmina Burana, and also reminding me why I don't watch "Merlin".

Thanks for that, trsut me, it's not gory compared to watched The Omen or Final Destination.....

Talking of which, I don't remember that music being in The Omen or at the prom, but maybe someone can correct me if I'm wrong???

I associate that music with Michael Jackson. It's what he used at the beginning of his DVDS, the Brace Yourself part.

You are correct that O Fortuna is not used in The Omen. That was just my poor recollection - but as I said the wiki article makes it clear that Jerry Goldsmith wrote all original music for it, and he won an Oscar. I think there are similarities. I wouldn't mind seeing The Omen again - it bloomin' terrified me first time round. Pat Troughton has a good role in it. I saw the remake a few years ago. As usual with these things they did not improve on the original, but Mia Farrow was good and David Thewlis had a good death.

Yeah, but Patrick Troughton died in that!

I have all three Omen films, they are all good!!!

The music used as I said before, it's so creepy. I love films with creepy music, that's why I love The Ring...it still chills me even now!!!! Brrrrrrr!!!!!

So do I. There may be a documentary on BBC Four about Orff soon. It is being held up due to legal wrangles not unrelated to some controversy about his supposed political loyalties during WWII. As with Wagner (also a Who prom selection) the nazis were fans.

It's a little difficult picturing the young chap in the TV series growing up to be the space cadet loon of Excalibur. Maybe he drank a potion at some point. (I saw "Merlin" for the first time this weekend - Merlin is pals with Arthur, who knows he is a prince and already living in the royal palace? I clearly need to start watching from the start. Or not.)

That should be an interesting programme. I didn't know about Carl Orff's political views (alleged?).

It just annoys me so much that the whole Merlin/Arthur story has been so mangled by the BBC. Merlin is NOT contemporaneous with Arthur, he connived at Arthur's conception, for Heaven's sake. This is what used to be called "The Matter of Britain" and it's all there in Malory, or T H White, or Mary Stewart.

The annoying thing is, if they'd used different names, I'd probably have watched it, and quite liked it.

Back to the Proms, I used up all my superlatives on the other Prom thread, so I'll just say - magical.

I just suspend reality and enjoy the tale telling. To me Merlin is just as real and based on actuality as Doctor Who. Even reality is heavily censored and rewritten on TV anyway, so, for me, ignoring any historic references is the best way to enjoy TV. The recent HenryVIII series is a classic example. Quite enjoyable as TV, but bloody awful as revision notes for a History exam!!!

Anyway, I don't watch it because it's a children's programme

I don't know how they got away with that! But I must admit to watching a few episodes

Granny, are we now going through a cycle now that we totally disagree with each other all the time!!!

Merlin is like Doctor Who, if was a kids program, it'd be on CBBC and not Saturday evening viewing. Even my parents and people older than me watch it and they have no kids at home!!!!

Yes, I loved it, but I did a longish post on the previous prom thread saying how wonderful it was, so I didn't want to repeat myself on this one.

As I said on there, the most magical bit for me was seeing the kid's faces! It was lovely.

I have to agree with you at the risk of disagreeing with another best mate on here, nebo, that I don't think the classical music bits were the best choice. I think "Mars" is the most boring piece from The Planets "Jupiter" would have been better imo.

Yes, I agree.....

I said above I didn't think this years prom was as good as previous years where you could listen to rose's Departure theme from Doomsday, Song Of Freedom etc. There weren't so many good tunes this series so with the tunes you mentioned as well, it was a bit

And as I keep saying, Vale Decem and This is Gallifrey were the best tunes by far.

I love Vale Decem. You could have knocked me down with a feather when I realised it was a bloke singing. He's amazing! I do think the music for this series wasn't quite as good as the previous ones - but perhaps I shouldn't get into that! And I still like it, especially the 11th Doctor's theme.
