Past Companions

Has anyone else ever wondered how past companions led their lives after leaving the Doctor.
Being a viewer from day 1 I always wondered what Ian and Barbara ddi when they finally returned to earth. I always assumed that they got married, raised kids and led a normal life. How would they have reacted during recent events such as depicted in "The Stolen Earth" when they would have seen the Daleks again.
I would have loved to see a story that started with a scene showing Barbara's funeral, Ian and his grown up children standing at the graveside and then being approached by a strange young man in a tweed suit and bow tie who says "Chesterton, sorry to intrude, but there's something I need you to do for me"

Yes, I've always wondered this too.

If you believe the novels to be canon then life for one of the first Doctor's other companions, Dodo, became very unpleasant, she contracts a nasty STD and is ultimately murdered by the Master!

There is also a Doctor-less Who-related novel devoted the second Doctor's departed companion, Victoria Waterfield. I read it years ago, but don't remember its title or indeed its storyline, but I believe the Brigadier and Unit are also featured.

As for Jo Grant, we'll find out her story soon enough when she appears in the Sarah Jane Adventures.

It's interesting that you mention a certain science teacher at Coal Hill school, because I've heard a story, not sure if it's true, that when Mawdryn Undead was originally conceived, the maths teacher at Turlough's public school was going to be the very same Ian Chesterton! However, as William Russell was unavailable to play the role at the time, the maths teacher ceased to be Ian and instead became the rather unlikely figure of Brigadier Lethbridge-Stewart.

Yep, I've often wondered "whatever happened to.....?"

Have you heard the audio drama on (I think) the Dalek Invasion of Earth DVD about whatever happened to Susan Foreman, with Jane Asher? It's brilliantly funny!

How about, one of the Doctor's companions in the future turns out to be Ian and Barbara's grandson or grandaughter? That would give a chance for Ian to reappear occasionally.

Downtime, adapted from the Reeltime Video production of the same name starring Deborah watling, Nicholas Courtney and Lis Sladen (Sarah Jane Smith is in it, too).

It is true. Oh, and Ian and Barbara also reappeared (acting as consultants to UNIT) in the novel Face of the Enemy.

Another of the First Doctor's companions, Vicki, leaves at the end of The Myth Makers, a story set in ancient Troy.

In this story, Vicki (who is renamed Cressida by the Trojans) falls in love with a guy named Troilus, and decides to part company with the Doctor and Steven, so that she can stay behind and marry him (Troilus).

William Shakespeare, of course, wrote a play called "Troilus and Cressida", which was actually a tragedy, so I think that the Doctor should have possibly made more of an effort to stop Vicki from staying behind in ancient Troy.

Yes, but a) there's no real evidence Shakespeare's play was based on historical fact and b) If it was, then stopping Vicki from leaving would have buggered up history, so either way he was better off letting her go...

I've never read any of them, but I believe there were some short stories written where Ian and Barbara had a son that ended up marrying Tegan? I'm not sure what the stories were called, perhaps someone can elaborate on that?

Ian & Barbara's son, Jonathan became a Popstar in the 1990's, under the name Johnny Chess... He married Tegan, but later divorced...
As for other Companions...
Susan Foreman- Big Finish are starting up a Susan/8th Doctor series of audios, set up after The Dalek Invasion Of Earth, in December, with the issue of the at present, "subscriber only" disc An Earthly Child ...
Steven Taylor - Ends up ruler of Planet, & according to Peter Pervies, probably turns into a Tyrannical Dictator...
Ben & Polly - Go their seperate ways, after departing the 2nd Doctor (Polly gets married ,but Ben remains single) but according to a Short Trips story, they meet up in a hotel room on New Year's Eve 1985, to see in the eventful year of 1986...
Jamie - Gets dumped back in 1760's Scotland, with his memory wiped by the Time Lords...
Zoe - Gets dumped in her original location, with memory wiped by Time Lords...
Liz Shaw - Gets fed up with patronizing 3rd Doctor & goes back to Cambridge & later CERN... (According to the unofficial PROBE videos, she has picked up the habit of pipe smoking...).
Jo Grant - Gets married, later divorces & encounters Sarah Jane Smith...
Sarah Jane Smith - See Sarah Jane Smith adventures for more information..
Leela. - Dies in Z'nai prison complex, post Big Finish "Gallifrey" series audios...
Romana II - Returns from E-Space, becomes prisoner of the Daleks for 20 years, escapes (Big Finish Audio - The Apolocypse Element), regenerates into Romana III, becomes President of Gallifrey. (Big Finish Audios - Gallifrey series)
May have survived Time War...
Nyssa of Traken - Leaves Terminus, after discovering cure for Lazar's disease, becomes University lecturer, & encounters the 4th Doctor (Season 14 for him, between the stories, Deadly Assassin & Face Of Evil), and has at least 1 adventure with him (BBC novel Asylum).
She leaves him after a indeterminate period, to continue her work...
Encounters 5th Doctor, Tegan & Turlough during a attempt to find a cure for Richter's Syndrome ( Big Finish Audios- Cobwebs trilogy + unnamed future trilogy ), and adventures with them, for a undetermined period...
(Note: For them, it's Season 20, between the stories Enlightenment & Kings Demon's. From their P.O.V, Nyssa left them 2 days ago, while for her, it's been 50 years...).
Leaves the 5th Doctor again, after a undetermined time, settles down, marries & has a daughter, only for the TARDIS to send a emergency mental message, to her concerning the 5th Doctor's failing regeneration, due to the Master inserting a "nasty suprise" in the TARDIS for him, during the last minutes of Caves of Androzani...
(Big Finish Audio Circular Time - Winter for her, the last minutes of Caves of Androzani for him...)

The BBC Eighth Doctor Adventure (novel) "Legacy of the Daleks" takes place on Earth several years after the events of "The Dalek Invasion of Earth".

The novel features Susan, who is having a problem with the fact that as a Time Lady she is aging at a much slower rate than her husband, David Campbell (which sort of echoes what the Tenth Doctor was saying to Rose about the two of them travelling together for the rest of their lives).

As well as Susan, David Campbell, the Eighth Doctor and the Daleks, the novel also features the Delgado incarnation of the Master and ends with Susan being resposible for him becoming a grotesque horror marooned on the planet Terserus ... from where he telepathically communicaties with Chancellor Goth to come and rescue him ... which leads into the events of the Fourth Doctor TV story "The Deadly Assassin" (in which the Master tends to blame the Doctor and not Susan for his condition).

I may be wrong, but I believe that what Big Finish are trying to do with their stories featuring the Eighth Doctor and Susan may completely contradict the events of "Legacy of the Daleks".

Ah, the female assistant, to "keep dad watching" after Grandstand ......

Demure Zoe, uber cute.

My fave, Jo, the Kooky one in Biba outfits.

Leela and her loincloth .......

Since, according to Dr Who, time is "wibbly wobbly stringy wingy" (superb writing, RTD!), I doubt if any of them has a definitive timeline ..........

The phrase is 'wibbly wobbly, timey wimey', and RTD didn't write it, Moffat did. If he has any shame, he probably wishes he hadn't, though...

That would be a great shame-though not as much of a shame as it would be if both John Peel's Dalek novels hadn't been so utterly dire.

I always have an idea for an eleven doctors story where eleven materialises in this mansion and teams up with 3. or some other Doctor. And they then discover theyve been summoned by Ian who has accidently summoned the Doctors future selves too. (No idea how he does it though). ANyway, he needs there help to deal with Barbara being erased backwards through time. At this point, she has been erased but Ian remembers but the problem is, 1 has materialised while travelling with Ian! Anyway, there Barbara is fading so they have to try and find out who or what is the cause and why.

Thats it reall.y Oh, he has a mansion because on a DVD extra he introduced the story in character and he was in a mansion.

I remember reading a fan-fic story a while back that had the 9th Doctor bump into an elderly Tegan. He aproached her to introduce himself, but she recognized him first and addressed him as Doctor. When the Doctor asked how she knew it was him, Tegan said that he 'the Doctor' had shown her pictures of all his younger selves. She went on to reveal that she had travelled with the twelth Doctor.

Have to see if I can find the link for the story, wasn't half bad. I guess a similar thing in the actual show would be River Song knowing the Doctor from the future etc.

No, it's definitely a big ball of wibbley-wobbly timey-wimey stuff.

Perhaps the word ball made you think of string?

The 8th Doctor version of Shada has Romana II as President, does the Big Finish stuff contradict this?

I can't recall. But the sequence of events in Shada is in step with that in the Virgin Books, in which she is already President before regenerating.
