I spoke about Chryed in my Philosophy class! We were talking about when things that are 'wrong' aren't always wrong and I said infidelity and used Chryed as an example. This homophobic **** was like 'You can't be gay!' and then the teacher was like 'We'll come back to that.' because we're doing sexual ethics and talking about homosexuality. I actually want that idiot boy to leave the class, he's so close minded, won't even listen to our discussions that God might not exist and is genuinely unintelligent. He thought Philosophy was Religious Studies, which just goes to show really.

Wow! This is a really interesting thread.....it's from WW
There isn't much "new" to be done when it comes to story around sexuality. What EE can do is do the story better and in a more compelling matter We were discussing something similar earlier on.... What I like about Chryed is they were two people at different stages in their lives, one ready to settle down after a lot of sleeping around and approaching 40, one ready to embark on a pointless exercise in futility with a woman who looks a bit like a horse covered in glitter. They were both so different it showed that gay people aren't all like Sean from Corrie and there is a vast spectrum, I mean they even had Layton to show that everyone is different and some people are. What gay teens need more, is to see a stable adult couple being normal as a positive role model and example. I think they can manage to crush on their best friends on their own. I've seen the teenage 'oh I kissed a girl and I liked it!' lots of times, and to be honest I have heard from gay teens and they have all that groups and support at school now. It's a bit easier for them these days, but for people trapped in a culture or religion, there's no support for them really. EE did it better than Biker Grove anyhow which was for teens. That kind of storyline was the reasons me and my siblings weren't allowed to watch soaps, because my parents figured it turned you gay. Which is stupid, but idk... it kind of has made me a bit now. ![]() Anyway, I think the "new twist" can be a nice couple treated the same way as the others. I think EE did that before in the 80's with some people I can't remember it but it was in the behind the scenes show. The do do that well. They don't do lesbians well though. |

ooh that is interesting. But I am not sure the teens need another best mate crush. I'd like to see a lesbian in EE, but it's like they have their minorities and gay quota filled with 'box-ticker' Syed now.

Which is stupid, but idk... it kind of has made a bit now. ![]() So you can't deny the positive impact these storylines have but whether EastEnders could pull one off is another thing, I'm personally not a huge fan of Christian and Syed, the story does have it's fans and they are very supportive and vocal but I don't think it's been successful in appealing to the masses Lesbian-wise... Zainab would be just that bit too obvious perhaps, but then again, the self-hate, the denial and the family issues would certainly make for interesting viewing. And Nina is an actress who could definitely pull it off. That said, I like the Masoods as a family unit and don't think it needs to be broken up I'd be happy to see a well-written gay or lesbian storyline under Kirkwood. As long as it isn't as boringly protracted as Christian/Syed (both good characters though) or as pointless as Sonia/Naomi, or it isn't solely about "tackling an issue". I like the idea of Steven Beale returning. If he has gotten therapy for his mental problems, he could be a strong younger gay character. Ian and Steven could reconcile causing more conflict with Jane. Christian could befriend Steven who could continually try seduce him causing problems with Syed |

Show young teenagers that gay adult relationships are no different to any other relationship. Show a committed long term gay relationship in a postive light, as johny said an us against the world story, of two men in love strong and committed to each other. bib, they need to give a voice to this area. maybe have syed working to help others just like himself, once he is comfortable with his life as a gayman, have him become involved with a gay muslim support group. With Christain there to support him, i have no doubt he has the strength to do this. third bib Glowbot you are just amazing |

Yes I can see all of this....what I like about that thread is the discussion of different characters and why such a story would or would not work. It's points like the following that I found interesting especially in light of the discussion we were having this morning, about other soaps taking what was criticised about Chryed and making sure they didn't make the same mistake.
So you can't deny the positive impact these storylines have but whether EastEnders could pull one off is another thing, I'm personally not a huge fan of Christian and Syed, the story does have it's fans and they are very supportive and vocal but I don't think it's been successful in appealing to the masses Lesbian-wise... Zainab would be just that bit too obvious perhaps, but then again, the self-hate, the denial and the family issues would certainly make for interesting viewing. I like the idea of Steven Beale returning. If he has gotten therapy for his mental problems, he could be a strong younger gay character. Ian and Steven could reconcile causing more conflict with Jane. Christian could befriend Steven who could continually try seduce him causing problems with Syed I think her and Massood are a lovely couple (despite their rejection of Syed) and for her to understand true love and being rejected and burned for running away from an arranged marriage etc, that love she has for Mas and takes for granted is an important part in the story. I love the contrast of her hypocricy, it is a really strong story point. Her fears and hatred for her son are driven by that social rejection, not homophobia from being secretly gay herself. In this way it shows the culture and strong family traditions around them, rather than if she was gay then it would absolve the responsibility of pakistani/islamic etc culture of being 'homophobic', and make it a personal problem exclusive to Zainab. btw, not saying it is a homophobic culture, rather that the strong family model and social pressure don't allow for such things. Aw thanks crazysuzan, ardchoile, diamond, lovely laura ![]()

Personally I don't want to see EE tackle another gay storyline right now. They have Chryed and they have barely touched the surface with them yet, and all the issues they have. I'd find the "fall for best mate"/gay teen angle incredibly dull. It has been done a million times before and we have had so many gay teens in our soaps and dramas. What makes Chryed so unique is not only the Muslim aspect, but the fact that Syed and Christian are both adults, Christian being almost 40.
