Doctor Who was created by BBC employees as a BBC property. ITV would have loved DW, I'm sure, but it was always a BBC thing.

Sydney Newman, who created the original DW ideas, and Verity Lambert, the first producer, had worked for ITV before they came to the BBC, if that helps.

Didn't Verity Lambert return to ITV for the likes of "Minder" or did I just dream it?

As i understand it, Sidney Newman invented "Pathfinders" on ITV.

He was then approached by the BBC, because the viewing audience were switching across to Pathfinders staight after Grandstand, and stayed on that channel the rest of the night, instead of watching DIxon of Dock Green (there were no remotes, you had to get up out of the chair ........).

So, the BBC approached Newman for a "competitor" similar show, to keep people watching BBC ..........

(the next DrWho trick was the scantily clad female assistant, also to keep dads watching after Grandstand .......

(famously, Newman was horrified by the Daleks "bug eyed monsters", exactly what he didn't want! But, he conceded to Verity Lambert "you seem to know what you're doing" ........).

Yes he did!!!

Another of my fave shows!!!

In answer to the OP, it's the first I've heard of it, maybe it's a bit confusing as has been said, both Sydney Newman and Verity Lambert both came from ITV.

Also from looking through the First Doctor Handbook Production Diary, Newman created the show once he was at the BBC so don't see how ITV could have had chance of showing the series.

Verity became a Big Cheese at Thames TV, then Euston Films, then set up her own production company (Cinema Verity). She made all sorts of amazing telly for the BBC and ITV. That was some time after DW, though.

She, and Sydney Newman, were BBC employees when they did DW. They were both at ITV before BBC. If memory serves, she got her big break at ITV and started climbing the ladder when she was a secretary behind-the-scenes during a live tv broadcast. One of the cast died during the production, and the director had to hastily chuck in an extra commercial break while they rearranged the production. Verity ended up directing live TV with no previous directing experience.

Yeah. Newman seemed to take a similar approach to his shows that JJ Abrams does nowadays-create and launch it and then leave other talented producers to keep it going.
