Will the panasonic DMR-BS850 Freesat Recorder be able to use the new BBC iPlayer? There's mension of 2009 Models receiving a software update during September but is this just for TV's or will it include this machine?

Looking at the spec for this unit, it does have a "LAN (Ethernet) Port", so in theory it is capable of having BBC iPlayer upgrade applied. Whether it ever gets this is anyone's guess.

Hi, I have the BS750, and am waiting for the firmware update. Panasonic Tech Support have given me a number of dates, the latest of which id "When i-player is fully launched". It seems that they don't care about their BluRay purchasers. It seems strange that even though the ethernet port is activated and used for VieraCast they cannot get iplayer working

You have to wait a little bit for the update. Currently Panasonic is updating the 2009 range of their freesat TV's with iplayer. Next step is to update the 2008 freesat TV range and after that the freesat bluray/dvd recorders will get their update.
You could check from time to time if a update is available via Viera cast.

Hi, any one having tv connection problems? I have just bought a DMR-BS850 and connected it to a Philips 32PFL9604 TV by an HDMI cable. Sometimes it connects first time and sometimes I get a message "Video format not supported" or "No video signal". It's either a compatibility problem, faulty HDMI cable or a fault in the TV or the recorder. Any ideas?

John

Hi dunworkin

I have exactly the same problem, have tried different leads and different hdmi sockets on the tv ( i have a 42pfl7404). I updated to the latest firmware for my tv but no joy.

Other Hdmi devices work ok, even a cheap Ross HD satellite receiver ( which the panasonic is meant to replace), I am currently using component cables. I tried using HDMI and Scart at the same time ( the manual shows this) but when it did work the tv switched to scart input ( thereby going into SD) whenever a menu was brought up on the BS850.

At a loss at the moment will try to call panasonic/philips but work makes it a bit awkward at the moment.

If you get any where can you let me know or if anyone else has any suggestions I would be grateful.

PS i have posted a similar query on AVforums so will see if any one more knowledgeable can answer (fingers crossed).

More bad news I'm afraid, I have just had a reply from my email to the Marketing Director at Panasonic:

I am sorry to learn of your frustration that your Blu Ray recorder does not currently have the facility to utilise iPlayer pending an upgrade. I must regrettably confirm that there have been some delays in providing the required update.

I would stress that software of this nature is always subject to extensive testing prior to release since the integrity of our products is paramount and cannot be jeopardised. Our research and development groups must be entirely satisfied with the effectiveness of the software before they will allow it to be released.

We are in constant contact with our design teams and do intend to have a suitable upgrade available by the end of the year. Obviously, we will retain your contact details and in the event of any changes to this plan (either earlier or later) we will contact you directly to notify you.
That's another delay It's getting beyond a joke.

Reading that, I thought for a minute that they weren't gona bother as its now an obsolete model Hence the vast price drop, because orginally they were £1000 to buy new

Personally I am on the verge of giving up with Panasonic. As well as my BS850 I also have a Humax which has had iPlayer (albeit in beta) for an age. Clearly Humax have a commitment to supporting their kit that Panasonic do not. Equally, the 850 will not get an upgrade to support 3D bluray; something other manufacturers are doing on 2009 kit. Seems to me that Panasonic nowadays release out of date gear with no upgrade path - a bit irksome having paid full price for the BS850 as I got it at launch.
