sorry if this has already been said. But i have never watch Sarah Jane Adventures (dont know why) however i do watch it when the doctor is in it. and today i saw a trailer showing Matt Smith's doctor with Sarah Jane

But i would have thought surely as Doctor Who is no longer RTDs why is he still aloud to make spins offs and include the doctor in them. Im not saying i dont agree with it because i cant wait for Torchwood. But im kinda worried that as all 3 shows are made by two different writers, will there be any inconsistencies?

Moffatt, RTD etc. will have worked this "Doctor appears in
SJA" story all out in advance. And it's not unusually for
former DW producers to return to do some work on the show-
look at the late Barry Letts.

I think it's great that the two shows can still connect together even though Moffat is now in charge of Who. I'm really looking forward to seeing how RTD wrote for Matt's Doctor. I think we can expect a few cheeky asides, probably lines given to Clyde and co about how the Doctor's changed since they last saw him.

I can't recall the makers of Doctor Who allowing any inconsistencies through to the screen thus far, so we should be ok.

Or alternatively, for those not on gloves, they talk/write to each other so fingers crossed they keep things together for one story.

Regardless of what you think of RTD's Doctor Who*, he has shown considerable versatility over the course of his career, see e.g. Second Coming or Queer as Folk versus Sarah Jane or, ummm, Why Don't You? I therefore suspect he is 'allowed' to continue with the spin-offs because under his helm both get decent audiences and good write ups with the critics.

Since he and Moffatt seem to like each other and to have a good working relationship, I'm confident Smith's performance will be brilliant and well written.

* in my mind, Who should appeal to everyone. Inevitably it tends towards some people more than others during any creative period; RTD's stuff will necessarily not have appealed to everyone but it doesn't then follow that it was bad, especially given the viewing figures and critical response.

You do realise that if Tingy watched SJA (which he doesn't obviously, it being a children's show, created by RTD who by his account ought to be burning in the fires of Sylvester McCoy's Oven, given that this week SM's last Season is the favourite but don't judge anything by that because oddly, a few months back, Pat Troughton's first Season was the best ever and then, just to mix it up, he argued that seasons were series and then back again...damn, he's hard work) he wouldn't like the RTD two-parter when it airs even though it has Matt Smith in it and has been approved by Steven Moffatt...don't you?

Why???

Do I have to wait until October 11th!

I love SJA which is a bit sad given I'm a man of 30 at least I have a good excuse to watch it as my daughter loves it too.

Watched "The Wedding of Sarah-Jane Smith" again the other day and it's still a cracking ep. Nigel Havers is a legend.

I feel quite sad that I'm looking foward to SJA more than I'm looking forward to Dr Who. But suppose that's just swings and roundabouts.

The cliffhanger at the end of "The Temptation of Sarah Jane" remains one of the most visually brilliant of any kids programme I can remember watching and okay, the resolution is all a bit "Father's Day" but it still gets me shedding a tear...hurrumph, who said grown ups can't be childish?

You missed out 'serials' too!

Anyway, I can't see why they would take the spin-off from RTD's more than capable hands. It was through his drive that it was created, through his plotting and writing and chosing the writing teams that they have both had decent audience shares...

There shouldn't be any question that he carry on with them!

Slightly off topic but does anyone else think Liz Sladen might have had some work done. She looks terrific for her age and I don't remember thinking that last time I saw her??

This thread reminded me that I STILL haven't watched the last 2 episodes of the last series, I keep forgetting.

Must watch them before the new series starts.

It is very considerate of the Doctor to ensure that his encounters with Sarah happen in subjective chronological order for both of them (except in 'The Three Doctors' and 'The Five Doctors'). Being a time traveller and not always in full control of when and where he turns up, it must be quite an effort not to have things as convoluted as in 'The Time Traveller's Wife'.

Then again, we don't get to see everything, so maybe Sarah has already met the 16th Doctor, but is carefully not telling any 'earlier' Doctor she may meet (spoilers!).

Seeing as how Sarah Jane is living life in chronological order, it would be very simple for the Doctor to visit her once a year, that way there will be no mix ups

Why should there be? There are far more than two writers on each show anyway, and always have been-RTD didn't write all the episodes when he was in charge and neither does Moffat. I'm not sure why you think there'd be a problem?

It is a fair question as it's a different producer than before. All the other appearances of the doctor have been produced by RTD
