SCD going back to Blackpool

15-09-2010
The BBC have confirmed that SCD will be returning to Blackpool again for a one-off special this year.

No dates have been mentioned yet, apart from saying it will be "one weekend in November"

It will be nice to see them dancing in a "proper" ballroom again...no doubt it will mean everybody saying how much they want to get to Blackpool and how much it will mean to them (like Craig did last year)

Ahead of you there. Its Saturday 20th November - as per the link re tickets for the show. The ballot closes TODAY at 10 pm so if you havent yet entered the ticket ballot TODAY is your last chance!

I love how they really publicised that - first I've heard of this at all.

Strange how Blackpool Tower seems to be "the" place to dance when Blackpool itself is one of those places most people turn their noses up at! I've always found the Tower ballroom to be rather depressing - very dark and dim, and the floor is usually horribly fast (slippery).

For me "the" place to dance is the Winter Gardens (still in Blackpool) where the dance festivals are held in May & November - it lights up beautifully for competitions, is bright, atmospheric and fabulous.

She's just given me a reason not to vote for her!

From the feedback I remember last year, all the pros and celebs loved the springy dancefloor. However many onsite viewers with great hopes found themselves looking at the backs of heads, as the rows of seats downstairs were not tiered.

Jill Halfpenny adored it. Many viewers in this forum gave it 10, a real sense of occasion.

That was a real problem when I went to see Vincent & Flavia in cabaret at the Tower Ballroom earlier this year. Much as it would be a grand occasion and lovely to be there, I think it's probably better viewed on TV!

At least Craig was born here! That made me understand it...

Yes, did see lots of backs of heads but the atmosphere was electric! Really definitely was worth going.
Here's my write up of it, if you didn't see:

Hi Frankie, many thanks for sharing your ringside story. I believe Chris Hollins outperformed himself in Blackpool. There and then he blossomed from the inside.

It is delightful to be in the midst of persons genuinely happy and exhilarated even if one's role is an observer. As for your friend Chris Initiative he would have been in the Premier Division a century ago, smuggling for Devon and Cornwall coastal towns.

I visited the Tower Ballroom two weeks after the Strictly gala. Just a Sunday tea dance for locals, but happy people made it special.

Followed by another 13 celebs telling us for weeks how their grandad came from Blackpool , or their mum paddled there once or their train went through Lancashire once and they could see the tower in the far distance, or they have a sand collection .........and some people will vote to get them there............

Paul probably remembers a rabbit he pulled from a hat there, Shilton saved a goal .....its endless..........

Anne Widddecome's another one. She'll have been there many times, going to the Tory party conference in the Winter Gardens.

Also by going on the 20th of November, SCD will avoid being moved to the smaller studio that it usually has to move to due to Children in Need [nov 19th]

So what's stopping her? They run trains from London. She can go any time wants.

To be fair she was probably asked by a journalist or interviewer 'Would you like to dance in Blackpool?'

She could have said 'I'm just focusing on week 1 now' or 'Blackpool would be a great experience, but I've got 7 weeks' dancing to do first'!

The Tower is home to the British junior championships though and it is a magical place, especially if you are doing well . It feels like a hole in the ground if you aren't though

Yes, they could script all the answers the celebs give to questions....or they could just be honest.

I never said script - she could have given a much more refreshing answer and said she was taking it a week at a time and focusing on the learning that she is supposed to be there to do rather than thinking 2 months down the line when anything could have happened....
