Does anyone know if Matt and Karen signed, as has been rumoured, three-year contracts or were they for three series? I've only read about Karen supposedly doing so on this forum, though.

But they aren't: they're producing two series', each half the length of the ones we've had in recent years. It has sod all to do with their opinion of the fans, and I fail to see the problem, anyway.

Absolutely. If anything, it's returning to a format slightly closer to the classic series, which surely shows upmost respect to the old guard of who fans.

Furthermore, it can only be considered profiteering if they sell it on DVD at twice the normal price for 6 episodes, which is hugely unlikely - especially if they continue releasing the 3 episode dvds throughout the run. I can't imagine you'd pay more than 20 quid for each half of the complete years episodes of who.

Personally I think it's a great thing. Although i would have preferred two 13 part series, not that that is ever going happen. From what Moffat has said the end of series 6 is going to be pretty awesome, and we wont' have to wait till christmas to see more Who.

This is a needlessly cynical view - as I see no supporting evidence.

As for your assertin that it will be two DVD sets at £40 each... Well, they're not full length series', so they can't charge that much each.

I don't see why you're having such a problem believing it's for dramatic purposes.

Yeah, expect series 6 (or series 6 pt.1, whatever it ends up being called) to be £20-25. They won't charge £40 for 7 episodes, partly because there will be less discs.

It says two seasons in one year on the cover not two series any way but not long to wait now to find out the truth.

You're a bit slow on the uptake, Tinny!

I hope we all know about Matt Smith's appearance in SJA series 4 by now!

Have you been staying away from spoilers?

The front cover of said magazine says Two New seasons for 2011. It doesn't say that series 6 and 7 will be shown next year. SM has already said that next year's series will be split into 2 seasons so he can focus on creativity. Basically the magazine says nothing new to what we've already been told.

Also, I see no mention or have no reason to believe that there will be 2 box sets next year. Come October next year, the 2nd instalment will be over so releasing a boxed set in November as usual will still be feasible. As muttley said in an earlier post, until we get it confirmation from the BBC there's no point in getting our knickers in a twist!

Yes, they are splitting one series into two - it is just BBC marketing and spin which is making it out to be two series. But I agree, nothing to do with fans and there is no problem. Shame DWM has gone with the hype - what a disappointment for people who see that cover with no prior knowledge and then read inside what is actually happening.

Thought there were going to be two mini series of seven and six episodes next year, not 40 plus weeks of non stop Who.

What BBC marketing, spin and hype?

As far as I have seen, all BBC press releases, all BBC mutterings on this have been quite clear on the fact that next year there is but one series, split into two at the request of SM. One series, no marketing, no spin, no hype.

Take this one for starters:

Quote:
“The BBC and Steven Moffat have announced today that the transmission of the next series of Doctor Who, in 2011, will be split into two blocks, transmitting in spring and autumn.”

So unless someone somewhere has grossly misinterpreted an official press release and published that misinterpretation as fact ......

Part of me's glad of the series split, means something who related (series 6, torchwood, sarah jane, series 7, christmas special) should always be around the corner next year, but part of me can't imagine a six episode series and is worried that if like this year the first few episodes (minus the opener) are the year's duds that series 6 will feel like it's only just starting to get really good before it finishes. There again, I'd rather that than after the christmas special be waiting till September / October next year for the next series plus I like the idea of only having to wait a few weeks between the 7 finale and christmas ep rather than the usual few months. Wonder if they'll do the same split in 2012 or revert to the old 13 episode run but in autumn? I hope if they do the latter they introduce an easter special.

To be honest, the 2012 series will be determined largely by judging on how successful next year's will be. If the split is popular and well received then there is every assumption it will follow that format in 2012. The BBC will make the relevant decision as soon as they know if SM's decision to split the next series was a good move!

The autumn? I always thought they could take one of the scary eps and make
a "Halloween Special" out of it...

I'm sure I saw an interview with Moffat where he said it was series 6 and 7 next year. So unless he doesn't know what he's talking about....

I think he said something like "it'll feel like there's two series' next year" but didn't actually suggest that it would be series 6 and 7.

There is one issue that has just occurred to me. If the BBC confirm that it will be series 6 and series 7, maybe that'll be just to fulfill the three series' contract that Matt has so perhaps he is actually leaving next year as previously speculated. Still, that is all this thread and any comment in it is. Speculation!

I think it is going to be one of those decisions where if it works it will be a brilliant decision if it doesn't well... not such a great decision.

Much like the uncertainty there was when the news that Torchwood Children OF Earth would be a 5 parter, that tund out to be a very smart move.

could be right i was only half watching it. I'm hoping we get a good number of years with the current Tardis crew though. I think they work well together.

We can but hope!

Edit: oops, misread your post, thought you'd written Moffat! Don't want Matt to go, just need a decent head writer.

I said "slightly closer" to the orginal format, not exactly the same.

Except that it is Series 6, as already announced by the BBC.
