My plasma tv has three main aspect ratio settings (4:3, 14:9 and 16:9) But i want to watch some old films which were in a ratio of 1.37 : 1. So what would be the cloest ratio to (1.37 : 1) from the three?

You shouldn't have to set it on the tv. The 1.37 should be cropped on the bluray or dvd, the bluray would be 16:9 cropped with black bars to 1.37. Dvd depends on how it was formated, should say on the box.

The maths is pretty straight forward to convert ratios to decimal:

4:3 (4 divided by 3) = 1.33

14:9 (14/9) = 1.55..

16.9 (16/9) = 1.77..

1.33 is your closest, which makes perfect sense if you think back that we had 4:3 TV for a long time before 16:9

I presume you want to watch these in something as close to the original format as possible; as opposed to zooming up and cutting off the top and bottom to make it fill the entire 16:9 TV area???

If so, the check your DVD player set-up menus as well as the aspect ratio on the TV.

It should play back correctly with your TV set normally to 16:9, shouldn't it? The 1.37:1 frame will be set in a 16:9 frame with black side-bars.

The films will not actually be "in" that format (1.37:1), they were filmed in it but will have been converted to either 4:3 or 16:9.

It will say on the DVD box somewhere, something like "formatted for 16:9 televisions" or more likely "formatted for full-frame"

-------

The conversion will likely just be 4:3 with a very thin black band top and bottom. This can be displayed on a 16:9 TV in the usual way for 4:3.
