Room for another STB anyone?
So Project Canvas is now YouView, which I guess is the slightly more expensive big brother to Freeview. Mixing IPTV and OTA - anyone interested or will this be a step too far into all the other STB's territory?

Youview is a spec for STB and ip enabled TV makers, the sets will be then be the replacement standard BT vision and Talktalk TV boxes at low cost with a subscription bundle.
Or you can buy it as an upmarket PVR box or ip enabled TV without a subscription for £200 and just have catchup TV (iplayer, itv player, five player, 4od, seesaw, etc, from the main channels and Google's youtube) free!. A lot of people might do this as a 2nd set for kitchens or bedrooms rather than VM or Sky multiroom! By joining Youview, BT and Talktalk will then have better boxes to take on Sky and Virgin pay services. Sky and VM have declined to join Youview for various reasons, have complained about it tp Ofcom and will probably carry on improving their own designs of boxes to keep their customers moving to BT or Talktalk bundles! It could be that O2, Orange and Vodafone home broadband join Youview to add TV subsription services to ther bundes to keep up! Other STB makers like Fetch TV might also join Youview. Apple TV and Google TV might not and continue to sell thier own boxes!. |

A spokesperson for YouView told BBC News that the door was open for firms to bid for the set-top box contract.

A few companies including Virgin Media have complained to Ofcom over the anti-competative nature of Project Canvas / YouView.
