HD television on Freeview and recording programmes shown on Freeview channels
I hope to buy a new HD television and HD hard disc DVD recorder soon and would be grateful for any replies to my questions here
.1. Regarding high definition reception - What is the difference between a television which is "HD Ready" and one which is advertised as "Full HD"? 2. Some HD DVD hard disc recorders are advertised for sale - but I am not clear if it is possible if a programme recorded to a DVD disc from an HD channel can then by played back in HD on the DVD disc. Is it only the hard disc in the DVD hard disc recorder which will play back HD programmes in HD? I have heard of upscaling to improve the picture quality of some DVD discs - but that is, as I understand it, not the same as HD. 3. Will an "HD-ready" or "full HD" Freeview television receive the three HD television channels (BBC, ITV and Channel Four) on Freeview (my Freeview set-top box does not)? Will an HD DVD hard disc recorder with the Freeview label on it receive and record the three HD channels which are broadcast on Freeview? 4. Is it possible to copy a programme recorded on an HD DVD hard disc recorder to a DVD disc in the same machine? Perhaps this can be done on some HD DVD hard disc recorders and not on others? Do any readers of this thread know the names of any HD DVD hard disc recorders which can record from hard disc to DVD disc as well as from another DVD recorder maybe they could post here and give me the names of the machines and where I could buy one from? Maybe readers of this thread could recommend brands of Freeview HD televisions and/or HD DVD recorders to buy? Thank you to all who reply to this thread with advice .

Phew
DVD recorders cannot record HD channels in HD and can't record them at all without a seperate HD tuner of some description. HD-ready TV's have lower resolution than full-HD at sizes up to 32" there is not a lot in it. A good HD-Ready (Sony/Panasonic etc) will have a better picture than a poor full HD TV. Unless the TV has a HD tuner (freeview or freesat) it won't get a HD picture without an external box. There is only one make of DVD recorder that can record in HD and thats the Panasonic twin tuner Freeview+/Freesat range with built in bluray recorder. (very expensive) Twin tuner HD pvrs which can only record from their built in tuners are by far the most flexible approach |

To receive and record High Definition Terrestrial TV broadcasts you need a DVB-T2 tuner. Having a TV described as HD Ready or Full-HD is completely irrelevant in that respect. If it does not have the necessary tuner then it will never receive HD by itself.
DVD is not a High Definition medium. So you cannot record HD to DVD as a video disk. It is possible (if the recorder supports it) to record HD material as a data disk that can be played back in many Blu-Ray players in High Definition. To record a High Def disk as video you require Blu-Ray. A hard disk recorder can record High Def TV as it does not share the same restriction as DVD Video. The key to receiving High Definition Terrestrial TV is the inclusion of a DVB-T2 tuner. Only if that is mentioned in the specs or as a label on the box will it receive HD TV. |
