OP - are you on pay monthly? if so find the data settings and change your username from 'vertigo' to 'bypass'. this should see a speed increase. this ONLY works for pay monthly tho.

As for O2 network, ive never had any issues. I get about 3mb here, and that is all the time, not every so often.

I thought changing from Vertigo to Bypass just bypassed Image Compression.

I have had experiences with O2 before on my iPhone and they weren't pleasant! I have my iPhone 3GS on Orange now and it is so much better. I also have a Mobile Broadband dongle from 3 and almost always have a HSDPA connection and its very fast and reliable aswell.

Thine Wonk You seem to speak alot of sense and are very clued up about the various networks and what is going on with them, I think the OP should take your advice

O2's coverage isn't that great (I very rarely get 3G, it pops up now and again but mostly I either get Edge or HSDPA, and occasionally 2G). I get Edge more than HSPDA but when I do get HSPDA it is absolutely lightning fast!

I don't have much experience with other networks, but I'm not a huge fan of O2 nowadays, and will certainly think about making the switch next time.

O2 coverage in my area compared to Orange is shocking, and im considering moving back to Orange or even Vodafone once my 2 year contract is up in June.

apart from city centers, i cant seem to get a good, solid 3G connection anywhere

So I got bored tonight and decided to make a big map out of O2's coverage checker data which was last updated in September '09. The map is basically blocks of more zoomed in maps pasted in to a big image and it shows O2's national 3G coverage.

Here's what it looks like:

I've heard a whisper that O2 will be updating the coverage maps very shortly, so I'll be sure to post up a side by side comparison showing Sept '09 vs Sept '10 when it happens. It should be very soon.

O2 are complete carp around these woods. 3G is virtually non existent unless your in a town area and 2G is sketchy at best. Its true to say o2 and giffgaff offer some very good deals but whats the point when coverage is rubbish. They also seem to be the only net dragging their feet with 3G rollout. Annoying
