Firstly, I must say that she looks great. After the disasterous experimental make overs on X Factor, the cheesy and (I thought) unflattering pop makeover (including the 'overly-lit' photoshoot) that accompanied her album release, and various live performances in every shade of brown, her latest dark, mature and natural look is the best yet. Let's hope she sticks with it.
Yes, she is clearly (and endearingly) inexperienced and anxious on stage and camera but that's common and natural. It's one of the main reasons performers come to use (or maybe just overuse) drugs but that's another story. Let's face it, it must be terrifying. It's a myth that artists are extrovert. Most I think are introvert but have a desire to be seen or heard so strong that it overcomes their need to hide. And there's the problem!
I thought it was a good performance and it clearly went down well with the crowd, most of whom are not music-industry pro's (it's a digital media conference). She can certainly sing live and I like the way that she delivers differently from performance to performance. Ok, that may well have something to do with nerves and breathing control issues but it's a good habit for a performer of her type (a gimic-free, strong vocalist) to develop, be it deliberate or otherwise. The nerves will become less of a problem over time I'm sure whilst the ability to change-up delivery in live situations (taking chances right there on the spot, as they say) will hopefully develop and remain. It is something that great, gimic-free live singers do, especially soul/jazz singers. Every cloud has a silver lining!
