Things ain't boding well for Channel 4 (again ). Mind you, at least they'll get a full compliment of 22 episodes now if it does go down well. If NBC had any other decent shows, they wouldn't be so lucky.

Bizzare to see what happened to Junior Masterchef in Australia. I can only suppose it's a momentum thing and the Commonwealth Games totally got in the way. Mind you, did they not try a different format (Celeb?) last year only to see it tank? Didn't hurt the second series of the main show, thankfully for Ten.

I think rzt posted pretty much the ideal solution to the Doctor Who issue a page or two back. Strictly won't start till October 8th (providing they stick to a week after XF for the final - which would intriguingly mean Christmas Eve...).

6 episodes of Who in Sept-Oct is much preferable IMO to being buffeted around by Champions League, BGT and Eurovision in May, then airing on the longest days of the year in June. Of course, this all assumes the BBC will be sensible and not start DW at 5pm to squeeze everything in before XF in November, which is hardly a sure fire thing.

God, we're already talking about this time next year. Must get a life...

Good night for BBC1, but really thought Panorama would do better with the Chilean miners, probably would have helped if it wasn't promoted as 'Panorama'.

Is that another victory (albeit narrow) for Channel 5 over Channel 4 in primetime? It's a good job C4 has +1 and a strong daytime schedule to prop it up!

Yes I think Ten are now paying for clearing out their primetime schedule completely for the Commonwealth Games. That is proving to be a costly move which has dented a lot of Ten shows on their return. It's true to say that Celebrity MasterChef last year was fairly low rating as well compared to the main show, but the difference is that one didn't start very well either, whereas Junior MasterChef had a massive premiere but since then has lost half its audience in just over 4 weeks!

Surprised to see that Spooks and Whitechapel were neck and neck at 9pm.. I thought one of them would dent the other. Spooks is doing really well this series, staying consistent despite the competition. Is there going to be a 10th series I wonder?

Whitechapel is doing OK, but it did so much better last time it was on but it did have the advantage of the snow for its debut in 2009 which it obviously didn't have this time. Still I thought it would beat Spooks and dent it down to 4.5m as they are both very similar programmes and both have had Rupert Penry Jones in them!

The big three soaps did well. Nice to see Corrie and EastEnders above 9m. A good send off for the Inbetweeners too.

Five had a pretty good night.

Thanks for replying and that makes a lot of sense. I think I'm biased because I don't like the idea of making it more 'event TV' (I didn't enjoy the specials of Tennant's last year as much as an ordinary series). But I can see, set out like that, why it is likely to be good for the ratings.

Excellent night for all, bar Ch4. Some really strong figures there. Spooks is very consistent this series, despite the competition and I reckon if Whitechapel was against a factual programme it would be hitting 6m+.

Strong 8pm hour as usual for BBC2 and Horizon did very well. SCD:Takes Two boosting the 6.30pm slot aswell.

Really strong for Emmerdale, edging close to 8m and a strong share for the first Corrie. Wild Britain doing about the same as Countrywise aswell.

H&A above 1m which is good to see and FIVE's male factual programmes perform solidly as usual. But another awful night for CH4 with nothing in primetime apart from The Simpsons managing more than 1.2m

Moving Hollyoaks to a 10pm slot weeknights fills the gap left by Big Brother and aiming at a similar demographic.

The first series had a consolidated average of 4.66m [excluding STV] but ratings tailed off towards the end of the series.

Also a couple of one-off shows ordered by ITV1, probably to air during the Christmas period:

- Ad of the Year
- Family Film of the Decade

They had an 'Ad of the Decade' programme last year which got 4.5m, so I can understand why they're doing a similar show yet again.

CH4 first of all need to be protecting their big hitters:
-CDWM is so over exposed now that viewers are getting bored of it and aren't sure when it's on/whether it's a repeat or not.
-Location Location is being sacrificied against the soaps and seems to be airing repeats now aswell, confusing viewers.
-Secret Millionaire is airing yet another series up against one of ITV's biggest new dramas in years and films would do just as well here. Why not air this on Tuesdays when competition is weak at 9pm?!
-Grand Designs now suffering against TA...imo the series should have been cut in half, because it is hugely dented by TA and wasting its potential audience.
-Comedy like 8OTC doesn't work without a strong lead in and airing Embarassing Bodies revisits doesn't help the Friday schedule.

There doesn't seem to be much hope with extremely poor scheduling and unoriginal programmes (see Wedding House, Food).

First of all CH4 need to axe Ramsay imo, because he must be costing a fair bit and his shows just aren't performing well anymore. Then there needs to be some stability to the schedule and original programmes need to be commissioned and slotted in the right places around the big hitters to boost them-the problem is that most of the big hitters have lost about 1m viewers due to poor scheduling.

It's blatantly obvious that Channel 4 executives are deliberately running the channel into the ground so that they can get a topslice of the licence fee.

Either that or they've all bought shares in Channel Five.

It's the second time The Wright Stuff have discussed it in the past couple of weeks. I had to laugh when Terry Christian suggested C4's press people had asked Sir Jock to make these in comments in order to generate publicity and boost ratings for said show. Then Matthew joked if that was the case the head of Daybreak would be on the phone to Sir Jock as well pleading for his help before The Wright Stuff overtakes Daybreak in the ratings.


The Brides of Dracula was a film that carried on until 2325. Hell's Kitchen USA finished at 2300, hence the higher share for the former.

many of the viewers will be watching Neighbours at 7pm Im assuming?

Because the film went on for longer (and thus later) than the prog on ITV2, so towards the end of its broadcast, the 0.33m represents a higher %age of the total audience.
