Fair enough, I take back my original comment which was uncalled for in this instance.

But you are making it sound as if the only reason why Ch5 is winning nights over Ch4 is because Ch4 has a +1 which is splitting the audience. Simply not true. It may partially split it, but it's bringing in additional viewers first and foremost. Even if we go along with your method though, Ch5 still won Tuesday primetime quite convincingly, +1 included or not, so you can't really deny that Ch5 is making significant progress and winning more nights over Ch4 than is normal.

I guess it just boils down to preference but for me +1 should be kept separate since they are not a direct simulcast like HD. Nothing else to add to that really except I'm off to watch The Mentalist.

Isn't the fact it trends older actually a reason to worry about targeting a younger audience, rather than dismiss them?

Paul and Sharon yes, but Louis absolutely no. He should have been ditched from TXF when he was sacked years ago and just didn't fit in on BGT when he stood in for Simon IMO. Also if Sharon ticked the music management box, the third judge could come from another field - either the press angle again like Piers or from another genre, for example a dance expert.

I said expert!

Jason Gardener wouldn't be a bad poach from Dancing on Ice to fulfil the "nasty" roll, but really need someone who'd actually knows what they're talking about when these numerous streetdance groups take to the stage.

What you on about?

Amanda Holden is straight from the street - she's an expert.

First time that The Big Bang Theory has topped Thursdays this season, I think. It seems to have moved without too much damage - not as high as it was last year, but strong nonetheless. CSI seems to have recovered from the disasterous 2.7 a couple of weeks ago - indeed, that's quite a gap between it and The Mentalist. It also means that not a single show has managed to pass the 3.0 marker at 10pm this week on any network.

Some more pick-ups;
2 scripts for Human Target (FOX)
2 episodes for Rules of Engagement (CBS)

And CBS are trying to get 2 more episodes of Two and a Half Men, Mike & Molly and The Big Bang Theory though it may depend on Chuck Lorre's schedule.

Oh wow, a debate on +1, this must be a first for this thread.

IMO the +1 figures should be added to the main channel figures. The majority of viewers that use a +1 channel are viewers that ordinarily would have watched the original viewing but have chosen to take advantage of the later viewing in a case of clash, probably with a channel without +1. I can see how people dont want them included and see them as a repeat though.

As for C5, its had a good few weeks and deserves some credit but its not like it has made huge gains recently. Its beating C4 because C4 is in the pits at the moment and everything new seems to be flopping and previous hits are way down.

Does anyone know what Pretty Little Liars got last night on VIVA?
Brekkie

Tried to keep out of it, but I think the status quo of figures being reported with the +1 figure referenced (either C4: 2m +1: 0.2m or C4: 2.2m inc +1 0.2m) is pretty much fair. It doesn't really matter with the raw figures - the only complication is when it comes to the audience share, or when working out who won the hour (not that C4 have come close to winning an hour in recent weeks!).

BGT is more of a family show, I don't think they'll be alienating any audience by appealing more to older demographics. X Factor, whilst a family show, has a very young image and inevitably the end product will hopefully appeal to younger audiences. I can't believe you've dismissed Louis and gone on to suggest Jason Gardner . He is awful on Dancing on Ice and needs to be shown the door asap. Louis did fine when standing in for Simon whilst Louis & Sharon are TV gold. It also gives Simon an opportunity to get rid of Louis from X Factor- something as you say is long overdue.

New shows Nikita, Hellcats and returning show, One Tree Hill (12 episodes were initially ordered for season 8). No news of Life Unexpected yet.

alot of the new shows have had full season pick ups this year, seems like the networks are going to let even the ones with average numbers go a full series.

Not sure if it's been mentioned, but Kelly Osbourne is an upcoming guest on Life Stories.

Good news about Nikita. My favourite new show of the U.S. tv season out of those that I've seen. The CW is punching well above its weight with that show and the ratings have been pretty decent for the CW's standards.

lets be honest theCW is starting to get things together.

90210, Gossip Girl & Vampire Diaries have both been a hit for them, whilst Life Unexpected is doing ok.

This years new shows, Nikita & Hellcats are both doing fine, Nikita more so than Hellcats, but my point is the CW has had a few hit new shows since its started.

Monday seems to be the new Friday for C4 these days with The Inbetweeners and soon Moyles' Quiz Night. Both shows that in the past you would expect to see on Fridays.

Surprised to find The Event generated a fair bit of discussion on here tonight. Perhaps it won't be the Non-Event some of us were expecting and C4 will have something to cheer about tomorrow amidst the doom and gloom that continues to manifest itself.

I say perhaps because you never know with DS. And the pilot episode of any show is always going to generate more discussion than a regular episode, so it's hard to tell.

True enough although there hasn't been anything in the same league as The O.C. for a while, back in the WB days. What has been the CW's highest rated show to date, anyone know? I know The Vampire Diaries is up there. What else?
Charnham
22-10-2010
The OC was on Fox

Highest rated show, not sure but I think you are right about The Vampire Diaries.

Even if its not hit the "big time" yet, it is creating new shows, that alot of people thought it wouldnt.
Dancc
22-10-2010
Oh really? Haha! That's funny. I was convinced that was on the former WB network for some reason. I guess it is the sort of show you associate with the WB/CW. (albeit wrongly in this case)

In that case I guess Smallville must be one of the bigger hits in recent years? Although not so much now.
paltonz
22-10-2010
Looking at the CW schedule this season, there are three former WB shows left (One Tree Hill, Smallville, Supernatural) and only one former UPN show left (ANTM).
Charnham
22-10-2010
for what its worth I thought Gossip Girl started on the WB, but it started on The CW.

I can see why you would think FOX was on the CW however.

Smalllville is ending this series.
