Haven't laughed so much at the ratings since BBC1's pointless revival of Castaway bombed.
But low across the board last night. Yesterday was supposedly Summer's last hurrah. Looks like everyone decamped to the beach.

TV comedy is notoriously hard to do, BBC and Channel 4 don't really have much of a better track record.
Seven Days will be lucky to see the end of the series if that figure is anything to go by with the promotion its had. Next week will probably dip well below 1m and after that I think it will be pushed back to 11.05pm.
Re Daybreak- they've finally started tweaking it so now its levelled out, it might be able to start increasing its viewership as BBC Breakfast undergoes changes. Generally speaking in breakfast TV, they over take each other when something happens to the 'leader'. The figures aren't great, but at least its more consistent than GMTV which was bouncing allover the place.

Grand Designs really saved the night for Channel 4, although even that has lost a lot of audience year on year, it will take a further drop once The Apprentice starts. I expect they'll leave Seven Days in that slot for next week but if it only averages the 700k it had by the end of last night's episode then it will have to be moved in week 3.

Thought these might come in a bit lower yesterday due to the weather but looks like they fared OK. And thanks for posting them, as DS seem to be very slow on the soap updates recently - no updates from them for Tues and Weds from both last week and this week.

I think the One Show was dented because there was a Lib-Dem party political broadcast between the regional news and the One Show last night. Generally these political broadcasts rate pretty low.

Yet again George you take the ITV mindset that everything has to be cheap and if its not cheap axe it. If ITV ever want to become the driving force in British TV again they have to spend money and take risks. Im not saying throw everything they have at it but perhaps ITV could channel some money set aside to poach BBC talents and actually use that money to create a sucessful, money spinning new show.
I also find it hilarious that you completely rule out a Pop Idol return. No Pale Imitations? Because ITV have bever copied the success of another show and made their own version.

Really? The BBC have made tons of good comedy shows and sitcoms. HIGNFY, Outnumbered, Gavin and Stacey, My Family, Miranda, Michael McIntyre's show and even Life of Riley have all been successful in the last couple of years. C4 have the award-winning, cult shows like Peep Show and IT Crowd, plus I would add The Inbetweeners as that's part of the C4 family.

That explains why ratings were down across the board last night. A lot of people sticking their boot through the TV when Nick Clegg appeared on screen.

Most of the BBC's comedy offerings are not on BBC1 and have cult audiences elsewhere. Most of Channel 4's shows have very low audiences and are very hit and miss. ITV1's recent failed attempts at comedy have attracted around 2-3m viewers which simply isn't good enough for them. Getting comedy to a wide audience is very hard.
ITV2 & 4 sometimes try new comedy shows so if you're going to reel off every comedy show for the BBC and Channel 4 channels then its only fair you mention the ITV ones too.

Excellent numbers for the season 2 premiere of Modern Family (8.8/14). It was up vs last year's series premiere (7.8/12, which ended up being 12.6 million). So this should be around 13 million, which will be a new high for the series. It always has excellent demos too, so expect it to win among A18-49.

The only BBC comedy listed not on BBC1 is Miranda, and the ones listed for channel 4 are on channel 4.

The only BBC comedy I mentioned that is not on BBC1 was Miranda. Your point was that The BBC ( not just BBC1) and Channel 4 were not much better than ITV's record of comedy. Anyway, if you have the ITV group of channels and the BBC and C4 equivilent groups then ITV is by far at the bottom for producing comedy.

Modern Family looks to be up a bit and it looks like it could be an all-time high for the series in the key ad demo. Last year MF and Cougar Town premiered on the same night and CT had the higher ratings - however, it decined over the season while MF stayed strong. It'll be interesting to see the gap between the two last night. At 10pm, The Whole Truth bombed.
Good news for CBS who got strong ratings for Survivor again in its new slot while Criminal Minds appears to have been relatively steady vs last year. The Defenders seems to have had a decent retention from CM although it is lower than CSI:NY in the same hour last year. The Defenders more than doubled the ratings for The Whole Truth.
NBC aired their second most hyped show (after The Event). Undercovers from JJ Abrams. Early numbers suggest it could be good or poor depending on the audience profile.

I dont see the contradiction myself.
If X Factor is off air next autumn then I think it would make business sense to produce an alternative singing/talent show as their will be a gap in the market to fill.
Not every ITV commision has to be a risky, do or die situation where a show is either going to be a huge success or huge failure but they need to take MORE risks. I hope your aware that a business can make risky decisions in conjunction with a few safe, business savvy decisions.

ABC should be happy with Modern Family but not so well with The Whole Truth and Better with You. Defenders did okay but I wonder if CBS will be preparing Suspect Behaviour or Chaos for midseason.
Will be interesting how Law and Order: LA does against The Defenders and TWT. It may win its timeslot which would be a boost for NBC.
Out of interest - does anyone know what the peak viewing time for breakfast TV is? i.e 6am - 7am and so on.

Sorry, crossed wires due to my wording. What I meant to say was that they weren't originally on BBC1, and those that are don't necessarily get good ratings. Some of them almost certainly wouldn't have been a hit if they were straight on BBC1, they had to gather their audience and be ironed out over the years before being exposed to a wide audience. Its very hard for mass audiences to be attracted to comedy straight away because you can't please everyone. So when ITV attempt it and get 3m viewers its a flop and it may not be viable yet for Channel 4 that would be a hit. All comedy shows get cult audiences and anything on top of that is a mass appeal. ITV are at the bottom, but as far as solid hits go they are definitely few and far between. Channel 4's often fail to get at least 2m viewers.
Given Seven Days is recorded like a day or two in advance of it airing, I can see it getting pulled quite fast.

The Defenders did OK but didn't leave itself much room to fall in the coming weeks. Survivor is working out well at 8pm and Criminal Minds was strong.
The ABC comedy block did well - brilliant for Modern Family. Ties Mondays Dancing With The Stars premiere and only Glee has been higher so far. Better WIth You did OK - again providing it can hold that audience. Cougar Town's numbers look OK but not so good when you consider the lead-in.

The ABC comedy block did well - brilliant for Modern Family. Ties Mondays Dancing With The Stars premiere and only Glee has been higher so far. Better WIth You did OK - again providing it can hold that audience. Cougar Town's numbers look OK but not so good when you consider the lead-in.
Survivor is thriving on Wednesday how The Big Bang Theory and Bleep my Dad Says do tonight, I think CBS will be happy if Big Bang can do over 12-13m which is possible, dont hold much hope for Bleep though and I think it will be replaced at midseason by Mad Love.

I see it will make a speedy return to Sky1, along with a whole raft of returning US shows in week commencing 4th October.
Has S.V.U. been axed? Still a solid performer from what I can see. Or is it only the main L&O series that is ending?

Just the main L&O series got cancelled. Law & Order: Los Angeles launches next week at 10pm after SVU.
Disappointed that E4 aren't running the new series of Glee at US pace just now. The premiere was really good - even people who slated the "back 9" last season seemed to like it.
I like Modern Family & The Big Bang Theory, btw! I think TBBT might edge it in total viewers but I'm not sure it will match Modern Family's 5.0 rating in the demo.
