Yep, 3rd biggest non-final peak ever.

Live results shows 5 and 6 last year (16.6m & 16.4m) had slightly more viewers at peak, but I'd imagine that will be surpassed in the next few weeks.

I think it's still too early to say. At this moment in time I wouldn't have thought renewal was likely, but you never know. AGT grew in later seasons, perhaps The X Factor could do the same.


Quite an astonishing night for ITV1. Deserved though with a thoroughly entertaining trio of programmes.

I'm kicking myself for lowering my X Factor prediction for next Saturday at the last minute to just below 13m instead of just above it, although being on a Saturday and running for 2.5 hrs will probably knock at least a million off the average, so perhaps I'm in the right ball park. Frankly this show is becoming impossible to predict, but the clear trajectory is upwards!

Very interesting contrast between how All Star Family Fortunes is performing in the pre-X Factor slot on Saturday compared to The Cube in the pre-X Factor slot on Sunday. I'm glad they gave The Cube the better slot as it is more original and very watchable. Family Fortunes is just filler and its ratings have collapsed against a resurgent Strictly.

The music channels seem to be getting a lift from The X Factor as well. According to C4 Sales, 4Music hit a 1.3% share on Saturday among adults 16-34, I believe one of its highest ever, and a 0.5% all-day share. I'm willing to bet the 2 hour X Factor "Story So Far" programme was one of the reasons for that.

ATV are claiming an average of 13.3m for X-Factor but I'm guessing that's without HD? They have 8.8m for Downton though.

BBC One held up incredibly well again, which is why it still managed to beat ITV1 in the all-day shares. (18.5% v 17.8%) Probably helped as well by the Commonwealth Games opening ceremony.

Amazing set of number all round, really. I have simply no idea where this XF train will stop - I genuinely thought the best it might hop for this year would be to repeat last years numbers. But for whatever reason, more and more people just seem to be taken in, week-by-week. I'm sure it'll top the yearly chart now - mammoth length shows or not.

And at long last, ITV have really made use of that massive inheritance. It's figures are a testament to what can happen when you deliver a lot of people to a sublime programme. How BBC One must wish they has a chance to offer a new drama so many bums on seats on a weekly basis.

Also, I must note how well BBC One continues to do in the face of massive competition. It's still pulling figures that would win it most other Sunday nights across the whole year. George Gently has been solid, and I hope the Tennant drama does the same next week.

What on earth has happened to this show?

I don't watch it, but I notice it's numbers are severely down in America and now it's premiered very poorly over here, too. Major cast changes, or what?

Yesterday people were claiming a typo over a 16.2 million peak which proved right-today the 16.2 is right.

The average is approx 7 million ahead of the 2006 figure which is astonishing. I dont understand it.

Downton Abbey has inherited a greater load of prospective viewers and probably word of mouth has made more tune in-last weeks lost 1.5 or so million along the way making this even more impressive.

Im astonished BBC1 won the all day shares with such a high peak but as has been stated the games may have been useful and the evening line up is very solid in the face of whats going on next door. The overall shares for ITV are poor and wont do much to arrest the downward decline-but Im assuming ITV must be making a mint with XF and DA?

I just remember that for several seasons the trend appeared to be that SCD was 1.5 to 2 million ahead on the overlap periods and that just about swung the ratings pendulem overall to the BBC. Later that turned completely around and well, now, XF is streets ahead. In fact we could be soon seeing regular ratings at levels not seen since the 4 channel era.

With all the rumour and counter rumour going around about next years XF does anyone think that Simon Cowell will stand up on the last show and say something to the effect that he was almost going to skip next year but the response has been so great he couldnt possibly do so?

I agree-AI is so established and ofcourse Cowell was part of it-it presents an obstacle that didnt exist with XF in Britain. But Im assuming that Americas XF will run in the same period, so somethings got to give hasnt it?

Super night for ITV, by giving Downton the post-XF slot and promoting it in a proper way they gave it a great chance to be a hit and as a result have now created a show that will be able to stand up on its own two feet by itself. I think it also shows that people like quality, people will watch quality, well made shows. ITV need more of them.

I think Downton figure is the one that will make ITV happiest but obviously the performance of the XF is quite remarkable. The XF team really are the best in the business at ensuring the show remains fresh and vibrant. It is a sensational success story. The worry is that with the exception of the Susan Boyle year, BGT never quite captures the imagination, and in my view, is a poorer show in comparison to the XF. It will probably perform well in the XF slot next year, presuming it gets it, but I would be surprised if it came anywhere close to getting XF like figures for the whole Autumn/Winter period.

Great figure for An Idiot Abroad in the officials for Sky 1, but a terrible figure for House in the overnights. It will undoubtedly go higher in the officials but it is undeniably a very poor rating.
