Sky Sports News reach figures for September 2009 and 2010

08/09/2009 - 7.653m 05/09/2010 - 5.532m - down 27.7%

13/09/2009 - 6.905m 12/09/2010 . 5.662m - down 18%

20/09/2009 - 7.523m 19/09/2010 - 5.647m - down 24.9%

27/09/2009 - 7.455m 26/09/2010 - 5.979m - down 19.8%

Considering they've lost maybe 50% of its potential audience, the average drop of 22.6% is not as bad as many expected.

Also, ALL shows on FOX, CBS (The Good Wife was steady) and ABC dropped down from last week. NBC was down with The Biggest Loser whilst Parenthood was steady. What was on cable last night in the US?

20:45 - Casualty
21:35 - BBC News

looks like we wont see a clash between Merlin & TV Burp, which pleases me

Not sure why you're quoting me. I said it was doing 'alright' for a Tuesday night ITV1 show. Which it is.

Broadcast claims it's rating below the slot average but I'm guessing they were comparing with weekday data rather than Tuesday data.

Seems a bit silly to air a 30-minute version of episode 5, when the previous 4 were the 45-minute versions.

I think the only "big" one was 'Sons of Anarchy' on FX.

Plus there's a MASSIVE Friday coming up for Ch5 next week with Neighbours' 6,000th and the season premiere of The Mentalist.

Apart from the dreaded 90 minutes commencing at 6:30pm, Channel Five is in very good shape right now. As I revealed a few days ago to no comment, the ONLY terrestrial broadcaster currently up year-on-year. ”

It's been a good couple of weeks for Five but I think one of the reasons why C5 did well in one of those weeks you've highlighted compared to last year was due to them airing a Liverpool match, which got almost double the figures of the Everton match they aired in the same week last year. That would've helped skew the shares in their favour.

C5's recent year-on-year rise is more likely a blip rather than a continuing trend. In the year-to-date shares, C5 is actually one of the biggest declining terrestrial broadcasters compared to last year:

BBC1: -1%
ITV1 (inc. HD): -4%
C4 (inc. +1): -7%
BBC2: -8%
Five: -8%

To make matters worse, their digital channels as a whole (Fiver, Fiver+1, Five USA, Five USA+1) are collectively down 5% year-on-year. Their multichannels should be growing, not declining. So overall Five as whole corporation is down 13% year-on-year which is far too much IMO.

Their Autumn lineup of programmes looks relatively good so maybe their shares will stay above last year's comparable levels (or remain stable), but for next year they'll need to find more hits if they want to stop, or at least slow down, their overall decline. I would say the only terrestrial channel in very good shape right now is BBC1, who have managed to stay very close to last year's levels consistently throughout the year, and this month is set to be a big one for them in terms of shares, probably experiencing a year-on-year rise.

Fair points. There's still a long way to go. But Channel Five has got off to a good start under Desmond and the future seems to be bright.

As for the multi-channel decline, I think the best course of action would be to merge Fiver and Five USA and launch Five+1.

Good news for Russell Howard's Good News, its now on Thursdays @ 10:30. I know there were a few "BSI" cooments when it was originally down for a Saturday.

And there's no need for BBC1 to do this. They could quite easily go:

6.00 Strictly
7.45 Merlin (I'm sure this will be a 45 episode even though they've given it a 50 minute slot.)
8.30 Lottery
8.40 Casualty
9.30 News
9.45 McIntyre
10.30 MOTD

That's super. At least we won't have to wait until next year.

Fast tracking of shows like Desperate Housewives, proven hits where its pretty clear they will last the full series, is a good thing.

There is still the possiblity that later in the series, ABC will have taken a few too many weeks off, we might have to as well, but that is the price you pay for Fast Tracking, and most will understand it.

Five is doing the same with The Mentalist.

Why don't TV execs see what we do with such shows that seem to have flop written all over them from the outset. C4 desperately need to be finding the new genre of television in the way that property porn and reality TV lifted them in the early part of the decade.

Shonda Rhimes, creator of Grey's Anatomy, Private Practice and upcoming Off The Map, says on her twitter that a repeat episode of Grey's Anatomy (Episode 7.02) will be airing on Thursday at 8pm.

My guess is that it might be this way until midseason.

I assume they're starting late enough so that they can run uninterrupted until Christmas. They'll no doubt take a break until they can air the second half uninterrupted.

I'm glad they're fast-tracking, it's just bizarre that E4 isn't doing the same with Glee which is in no danger of being cancelled anytime soon!

Looks like they're doing what they did with The Good Wife last year and premiere the first episode on C4 and then have 'first look' on a sister channel.

In the US they're showing the first ten episodes consecutively and then taking a break until the new year.

Hard to know what to make of No Ordinary Family when everything seemed to be down so heavily. It’s not a terrible drop but a 2.6 isn’t particularly good – it can’t afford much of a drop from now on. Detroit 1-8-7 is doomed, lower than The Forgotten in the same time period last season. But with The Whole Truth is lower and I don’t think ABC can afford to axe 2 series at 10pm in addition to My Generation. Quite a slip for Glee as well – Two and a Half Men had a 4.5 on Monday.
_____________________________
This piece explains why shows get axed so quickly. In simple terms, when a show underperforms, the networks have to “make good” to advertisers by giving them free airtime. While the networks usually sell most of their ad spots at the upfronts in May, some are kept aside and usually sold at a premium later. So what could have been premium slots end up being given away for free. And the longer they stick with a major flop like Lone Star, the bigger the losses get.

No Ordinary Family in that very tough slot is doing well - it'll get a back 9 at least.

Very pleased to see The Good Wife flat - couldn't go much lower for CBS' standards, and it's a brilliant show.

Glee still getting high ratings - I think a 4.3+ is achievable for the rest of the autumn.

Im not one to praise EastEnders very much but i have to say Last nights ratings were brilliant for just an Normal episode
Not only did the main showing(and share) perform well but so did the BBC 3 repeat
Some Big storylines coming up Friday and into next weeks (unadvertised though) so hopefully they can hold on to those ratings.

Doctors performing well also and with their 2 massive storylines comming up and a Big stunt before xmas i hope they can continue to rate well.

Emmerdale rated well and i expect them to break 8million for tonights episode

I've given up trying to get into the mind of a TV controller - common sense doesn't seem to be a requirement.

C4 have a promising new quality drama in "The Pillars of the Earth" beginning next week - so where do they stick it, up against The X Factor of course. Yes, it's a good alternative, but give it a better slot in the week then perhaps use a repeat as fodder against TXF.

The Secret Millionaire back for a nine episode run on Sundays too - a format they definately milked too soon as it was a great show, but soon got tiresome.

And The Event gets a Friday slot then - even if it looking like it's heading towards a flop, seems a stupid slot to put it in. They should swap it with Rude Tube.

Also baffling why they've pulled the first look Hollyoaks on the Friday. Hope it's a one off for reasons which will become obvious because the way the show is at the moment, E4 viewers are probably more likely to just stop watching than switch to C4.

FOX have become the first network to give a back 9 order to Raising Hope.

It's due to air at 8pm on Wednesdays as of mid-season with American Idol at 8.30pm and Glee at 9pm. Tuesdays American Idol will be 90 minutes with Mixed Signals at 9.30pm.
