Why do America debut all their shows in the same week? Wouldnt it be more sensible to agree to reduce clashes and spread shows out over a longer period?

that is an amazing start for Mike & Molly, both CBS shows did really well.

The Event did well, but so did Flashforward.

Looks like moving TBBT to Thursdays could be a great scheduling move for CBS because Mike & Molly started very well and I'm sure on Thursday, TBBT will post strong numbers and aid My Dad Says. They could now have two successful comedy blocks.

Not surprised that Hawaii 5-O edged out The Event which rated quite well but after reading some comments about it from viewers, I think that'll fall quite a bit over the course of the season especially due to the serialised nature of the show. House was going to be down vs. last year, but that's a big fall! And horrid for Lone Star, I doubt it'll even make it to November. Maybe replace it with Human Target? With House's ratings falling and the same probably likely for American Idol, I think CBS will take the No.1 network crown from FOX come the end of the season.

Edit: Actually maybe not regarding my final sentence as I just remembered FOX have the Super Bowl which will prop up their averages.

I think part of it is simply to build up some hype about the new TV season. All the networks have their upfronts (advertiser presentations) in May and then promote their new series over the summer.

US audiences, through tradition, know that the third week of September will bring lots of new series. Also, US TV is more structured than ours. There is an official TV season (it starts this week, runs to the last week of May) and they tend to work to that (with some exceptions).

And shows which premiere outside the week don't tend to do any better. The CW - which does start early - actually saw ratings for its shows rise quite a bit last night.

That analaysis is pretty much spot on!

Outstanding results for ABC as they have lead the night on Monday. Both DWTS and Castle are up, which are very good to hear. DWTS is always a ratings darling, but could they head for number 1 seasonal ranking? Also, could season 11 keep the momentum going after a huge comeback from season 10? I am also impressed with Castle. Their ratings are also fabulous and glad to see it improving from last season. I think they have always been good, but it was the episode with Dana Delany last season which made the show, in terms of ratings. With four Emmy nominations in total, this show will do great and better.

CBS also did good as well. Even though I have slightly overestimated Hawaii 5-0 and underestimated Mike & Molly. Now that the premiere is out of the way, could 5-0 go up or receive the same fate as Knight Rider did a couple of years ago? Rebooting a classic show is a risky business and we saw the results first hand. Only time can tell. Its sister channel CW is always a problem. Always. Monday night is proving to be a troubled two hours for The CW, with 90210 (2.16m, 1.0) and Gossip Girl (1.87m, 1.0). I have to ask, why is Gossip Girl still on air? It was always struggling. Are their international ratings good? Do they do great in DVD sales?

Poor NBC. Looks like E!'s Save Our Show poll didn't work after all. They did very well in that poll. Yet, the hardcore loyal fanbase didn't translate to good figures. The Event did decent and The Chase performed fair. Poor House on FOX also. They faced quite a slump, but still very good numbers nevertheless. Having a 4.1 demo for a scripted drama is excellent. Like people say, 4 is declared a hit. Total viewers numbers are also passable to quite good. Lonestar, on the other hand, may be the first show to face cancelation at this point. Can't think of any other show which did worse.

Add in multiplays, the number goes to 7.1 million. Expect a season two renewal as early as today, but no later than end of the month.

Thursday 8pm competition is pretty easy so I'm hoping TBBT gets off to a really strong start this season. CBS have really hyped its move.


I'll watch The Event tonight though I don't have huge expectations, tbh. Still, it's off to a decent start. Though it would have been good to see one new series with a 4.0 rating (albeit 3 came close).

Human Target is one option they have. Lie To Me also has some episodes on the shelf and isn't due to start until November.

Lonestar was only due to be on until Christmas anyway, when it will be replaced by Ride Along - but I'm not sure how quickly that can be ready.

Thanks. Wow, that's a fantastic rating! I know it was hyped a lot but I didn't expect much over 2.5m, especially after reading True Blood started with something like 1.4m. Yeah, a second series should be a cert unless there's a massive fall in the next few episodes which I doubt will happen.

I think The Event will possibly follow the Flashforward Trajectory. Good premiere numbers for Mike and Molly.

That's better than I'd have expected. Even if it doesn't hold that audience, it seems to be a frontrunner to finally take The Outstanding Drama Emmy from Mad Men and I think HBO really want that award back!

No doubt they will be a (almost) certain Golden Globe win!

Again, absolutley outstanding rating for The Inbetweeners to get 2.5m on E4 (just 100k down on last week), everyone must have loved it to retain that much % on the first episode.

While C4 does shockingly bad and once again nearly gets beaten by Five in the overall day shares.

Great start for Spooks, Live From Studio Five at 400k yet again.

Interesting set of US ratings to kick off the new season proper. Mike and Molly is probably the standout figure for me with a really impressive start on CBS. Nearly 3 million up on The Big Bang Theory's premiere back in 2007 although I don't think that had a 2.5 Men lead-in at the time.

Lonestar also stands out - unfortunately for FOX, for all the wrong reasons! The Event started solidly enough on NBC but my personal opinion is this show will go the same way as FlashForward.

And that just leaves Chuck - a harmless show which I have a bit of a personal soft spot for. It did about as well as expected really. I do fear for it this season, especially in that slot- I think it could well be the last. I just hope if that is the case that they are given ample opportunity to give it the ending it deserves.

This is a really competitive hour among adults 18-49. If DWTS increases in line with last night, it should have around a 3.8 rating in the 8pm hour. Glee moves to 8pm having finished its first season on a high – with a 4.6 rating. NCIS premiered last fall with a 4.6 rating though it did dip a bit towards the end of last season. The Biggest Loser should finish 4th but still earn decent ratings.

9pm:
ABC – Dancing With The Stars
CBS – NCIS:LA
FOX – Raising Hope & Running Wilde
NBC – The Biggest Loser

If DWTS increases in line with last night, it should have around a 4.7 rating in the 9pm hour based on last years Tuesday premiere. I think it could beat NCIS:LA which typically drops some of its NCIS lead-in but it should be close. Raising Hope & Running Wilde are new sitcoms from FOX (details below). Neither have a huge amount of buzz and FOX’s recent record in live action comedy isn’t great. On the other hand, there is a Glee lead-in. ABC vs CBS to win the hour and FOX vs NBC for 3rd/4th.

10pm:
ABC – Detroit 1-8-7
CBS – NCIS:LA
NBC – Parenthood

ABC’s ill-fated “The Forgotten” premiere here last season with a 2.6 rating. ABC might hope that a late marketing push and higher DWTS lead-ins can generate a better audience for Detroit 1-8-7. On the other hand, it’s not an obviously “ABC” show. Their record at 10pm last season was woeful. Michael Imperioli (The Sopranos) is a good actor but is he the right lead on ABC?

Parenthood managed a 2.7 out of America’s Got Talent last week, with tougher competition and lower lead-in likely, NBC will just be pleased if it holds around 2.3-2.4. Second hour of NCIS:LA should dominate the hour in all measures.

NOTES:

Due to a 2 hour NCIS:LA, The Good Wife doesn't return until next week.

And No Ordinary Family, originally ABC's most touted new series, is also held back a week due to the 2 hour DWTS special.

ABC did well, DWTS obviously benefiting from 'big' celebrities. Nice to see Castle doing well as well.

CBS did very well, Mike and Molly doing very well for a premiere. Hawaii Five-O got viewers because of the name, but apparantly it was good as well.

Eeek at Lonestar. The hype did nothing for it.

NBC had a mixed bad. Chuck - eek. I said last season would be the last, so I'll hold my judgement about this season for now. . The Event did pretty well, it needs to keep getting high 2's-med 3's IMO.
