I agree - can't see the new Idol panel really working. I believe though they're locked into a three year deal and with TXF in Fall 2011, the Idol franchise is certainly safe for 2011/12, but wonder if Fox would cut their losses and the 2013 series should TXF take off, moving the show to that slot - or perhaps push Idol out of it's traditional slot and burn off the final series either in the fall or summer.

I do wonder why the BBC feel the need to do this? Commercial channels yes, but BBC1? Especially as their Saturday nights hold up adequately (Merlin especially) against The X Factor as it is.
Anyway...oh dear oh dear oh dear for Daybreak. They can throw as many celebrities at the programme as they want but it doesn't seem to help the show at all. It already has a bad image and I cannot think what will turn the tide, bar getting Ant and Dec to present with Simon Cowell judging something. It really seems to be a bad sitaution. Despite this, I cannot see them bringing GMTV back - that'd be admitting defeat.
As for primetime - a good two showings from Coronation Street considering the start to the week it had. Emmerdale's still performing well and EastEnders has had a very good week. Paul O'Grady is doing as well as could be expected and I cannot think of much else which'd perform like that opposite New Tricks. New Tricks itself is doing well for a Friday night but could do so much better on a Monday or Thursday.

What Idol has in its favour is just how high it is now. It missed its target for last season - an 8.0 - but it wasn't far away. This week, the #1 show on US TV (aside from sport) will be Modern Family with a 4.8. The top 2 at FOX this week are Glee - 4.7 and House - 3.6. That gives Idol an awful lot of room to fall and still be #1. And with all the hype and publicity over the summer, you'd have to expect it to get off to a decent start. But perhaps it will do a Daybreak!
What FOX might benefit from is Idol falling a bit, X Factor being a hit (~4.5) and keeping both on the air but negotiating more favourable deals with Simon Fuller or whoever ends up owning American Idol.

If American Idol's going to move into X Factor territory then they may as well have forgot about buying The X factor and just kept a rebranded American Idol. As it is, they could isolate American Idol viewers with the new look, who won't take to The X Factor either because that is the image the show already has.

It was a great episode. I agree that the scheduling was poor, although personally I am glad that they fast-tracked it. Channel 4 have made a bigger mistake scheduling a new US drama there. At least The Mentalist is established, and will recoup many viewers via timeshift and tonight's repeat.

Didn't Holly Willoughby express recently that she wasn't particularly enjoying her role on This Morning and was missing X Factor? Any chance Holly could get the main X Factor gig if Dermot leaves for the US version, with Christine joining Phil on This Morning?

Fuller & Lythgoe couldn't find any American hosts that they liked. So they just hired a British host that they liked. Originally, the producers tried to recreate Ant & Dec for Idol but it didn't work and the other host (Brian Dunkleman) got the axe or quit after one series. IIRC, Mike Darnell from FOX hired Ryan Seacrest in the first place.
Also, a thread on the XF forum says BGT is advertising for auditions and the prize of performing at next years RVP. ApplauseStore also have BGT 2011 auditions "coming soon".

In a funny way, I'm not entirely sure Fox would have wanted to buy The X Factor. In fact, I reckon their personal choice would have simply been for things to stay as they were and Simon sign up for Idol again.
The problem is - Cowell wanted to launch XF (he has much more control over that format) and it would have been a disaster for Fox if that had happened on another network. No-one knows how Idol will do without Simon - it would be too big a risk to let him walk away, entirely. Therefore, they give him what he wants.
The multi-million dollar deals might be a factor too.
Not seen anything to suggest anything other than Holly loving This Morning, but if Dermot did move on Holly would be a much better choice as his replacement, and then if she did quit This Morning (I doubt she would completely), perhaps Christine could work there better.

They definitely wanted Cowell to stay on American Idol. But they were willing to buy The X Factor format (regardless of whether or not he featured) to keep him. The talk was of a $45m a year deal from FOX, continued rights to sign the Idols from 19 Entertainment and FOX buying The X Factor. In the end, Cowell decided he didn't want to appear on Idol & XF in the same year and he quit. He's unlikely to make much more money from XF than he would have staying on Idol, but it's his own show and helps to build his company.
It's definitely not ideal for FOX. September next year is huge for them because they've got the big budget Terra Nova (from Steven Spielberg) as well which has been given an unusually long time to produce (it was originally due in January 2011 but put back to September).

I hope Life Stories does well tonight. When i heard it was Russell Watson, i thought i'd probably give it a miss - but i am so glad i watched it. Not a huge fan of Piers but that is one of the best interviews i've seen in a few years. Such an emotional rollercoaster watching Russell talk about his life. Blooming brilliant.

Well to be fair it's not uncommon for them to the rounds after they've been eliminated... Daybreak, This Morning etc.
The fired candidates on Apprentice usually appear on Breakfast the next morning too... not sure if the same thing happens with Strictly or not.

The Mentalist's ratings aren't bad considering it was up against New Tricks and the two shows share an audience, it will timeshift very well though but I think they should have waited until January or at least until NT finished. I don't think it'll be affected by The Event though.

I don't agree. It was not advertising. There was no attempt to promte Daybreak.
