It's very sad so many Troughtons have gone as he was a really excellent Doctor. However, junking was part of the TV culture in the 1960s and 1970s when videotapes were very expensive and it seemed to make sense at the time to use them again and save money.
Think that's only partly true. For example, don't think any episodes of Coronation Street have ever been junked and there was less chance of those being repeated than Doctor Who.

I'm not sure if it gives you any crumb of comfort but I'm currently undertaking the arduous process of animating episode 4 of 'The Tenth Planet' should be ready by next summer hopefully
That sounds great! What are you going to do with it once you've finished (sell DVDs, post on line?)? Please let us know when it's available. Of course, this begs the question, if you can do it why can't 2 Entertain...........?

This is what I was saying about The Avengers. The majority of the first series is missing and you can only watch the first 15 minutes of it's first episode, which is actually a good episode from what I've seen. You also miss the first scene featuring John Steed so that's a shame as well.

It's just a shame videotapes weren't invented a lot earlier otherwise we could all be enjoyingt he whole canon of Doctor Who right now.

Cool, look forward to that, thanks for letting us know!

No I won't be attempting to profiteer from it as that would surely lead to legal wrangles.

2 Entetrain spent £50,000 an episode on animating a Troughton story and lost money, so the only chance for it to happen is for a fan to do it. I'll put it on YouTube when it's done and provide a download link for a DVD writable version, but I'm hoping to avoid any mainstream attention to myself from it as I'm quite a private person

Without wanting to dampen your spirit in any way, there is also quite a good animated version of Ep 4 on You Tube already. I'd be delighted if your version is better because I find the existing version quite impressive already.

Hope your version comes to fruition. Best of luck

Not at all, no spirits dampened here. I was in the early stages with mine. If it already exists and looks professional then I'll stop right now.

Can you find the youtube link?

I've just found it myself:

It's okay (in terms of quality - especially the cybermen) - it may be worth doing again properly at some point but certainly this will keep a few fans happy

There's plenty of others you can do instead! How about Masterplan 12?

My point is that there must be cheaper ways for 2 Entertain to do it, especially as technology has moved on. Also, if they did all the Troughtons in one go there would be economies of scale.

You're right, quality wise it was okay. Don't like to knock good work but the Polly and Ben and some of the other characters were a bit off but under a presumably low budget I suppose that's a mere quibble.

I agree with regard to the quality of some of the human characters but then I'm working on the assumption that this had zero budget and in those circumstances I think it's great work.

There's also been some good animation work done on scenes from 'Evil of the Daleks' but no full episodes yet.

The time will come when the technology reaches a point where high quality animation of these missing episodes is possible for a very low cost and without the backing of a production house. I don't think that time is too far away

I did actually say that in my previous post and as I said, it's not bad considering!!!!!

Let's hope the animation stuff you mention is true.

Really? Why didn't Granada Plus show the 60s episodes then?

Don't think they wanted to show black and white episodes. They started with 1976 when Mike Baldwin joined.
