Spotify ripper

Basically a programme that records the songs you play on spotify and saves them as MP3s to your computer - does anyone know if this is legal to do? one website says its fine because its like recording off the radio if its for personal use, but im not so sure.

There was a piece of software called "Despotify" but I am not sure if the newer versions of Spotify block it or not.

I think the legality will be one of those grey areas. You're not sharing it so you're not "broadcasting" it without consent but you're also getting something you haven't paid for... but in this case it's like recording from radio, kind of?

Spotify is getting clever, though. If you mute your computer whilst an advert is playing it'll pause the advert!

No it's illegal, check your Spotify T&C.

Nobody would bring you up about it though, ISPs don't keep track of that sort of thing. It's like downloading using a YouTube ripper or Megaupload.

hmmm.... in that case then i wouldnt mind paying the £9.99 a month if i could use a spotify ripper to save the songs...

Spotify have got good on stopping people downloading their tracks. It seems that the only way at the moment is to record them from your sound card which is not great since you need to have a good ear (and eye!) for levels and such.

If you're willing to pay £9.99 a month then you'll have access to the files all the time anyway, unless you want to put them on an MP3 player? The Premium service lets you listen to playlists offline as well (I assume it downloads them to your PC somewhere).

Seriously, if you want the tracks that badly without paying for them, use Megaupload or a Torrent downloader.

i used to, but i know that is definatly illegal, and without going into any detail, i do know someone that has got into a LOT of shit for doing just that and id like to avoid such trouble.

If the only way of staying legal is actually buying the music then so be it, but if a dirty little technicality like a spotify ripper will allow me to record the music i dont want to buy, then i want to know its ok.

Never used Spotify, where does it stream the music from? I used to use WMRecorder back in the day to capture all my streamed mp3s from sites like Last.fm & Myspace. Would that not work on Spotify?

Spotify will be doing their best to stop ppl doing this because the record labels will majorly unhappy with any "spotify rippers" and if spotify did not stop people from doing this, labels could stop their deals with spotify

Just Google WMRecorder and download the trial version, it's more than sufficient for recording audio songs as the trial version gives you 5 minute sessions at a time and it never took me more than about 30 seconds to rip a song. Every time your session is up, just close it and open it again for another 5 minutes. (though there's no point now as you're on a paid subscription)

Later on though, I just used my HQ sound card to record from Nero in WAV form, no compression in the recording process - what you hear is what gets recorded. I'm on a Laptop now so I can't do that anymore because it automatically records from the built in mic. So now I just search online and download.

Let it be clear that I still buy music too, spent £40 on music in the past 2 days alone.

i bought a ripper - forget what it was called.
i record from spotify and if i like it - i go buy it.
If I dont like it I delete it.

people stealing music and film cost me my job at Universal.

If you're worried about the ilegality of this it might be worth you waiting for Zune's new unlimited download service:

If you're not worried, then I can recommend Replay Music, which not only records, but will also go looking for the tags for whatever you record too.
