OK, so I've got enough money put aside to buy myself a nice 64gb Wifi iPad, I don't NEED one, but I sure do want one.. That said, it's a fairly safe bet that our buddy Steve Jobs is going to launch a new iPad in January, and unlike last year, where there was a 4 month delay till launch, it'll launch fairly swiftly after he announces it.

Logic would dictate I wait four months..

The "I love shiny things to play with" part of my brain says get one now and then upgrade in January.

What do YOU say?

I lovethe functionallity of my iPhone, and I suspect the iPad is fantastic... too fantastic... I dont need it to be that good.
I need something bigger thyan the iPhone cos my eyesight is not that good but I dont need it to be as big as an iPad. I just need wifi and web and a nice screen, speaker and bluetooth to my headphones. I dont need phone abillity, compasses, tilt sensors... I do need a print app though.
and maybe i need the camera to read bar codes and ....
it wont replace my desktop pc it cant read my camera memory cards...

I need a slightly smaller I pad

You will end up buying it again next year if you buy it now, they will add new features you won't be able to live without

I agree with IvanIV, save your money this year as sure as day follows night there will be an upgraded iPad next year which will be "better" than this [basic] version and may even be cheaper in terms of what you get.

My hope is that they make it lighter (it's too heavy to hold for any length of time) and include at least 1 USB port and/or a card reader. But mainly it's just too damn heavy for comfortable holding.

I'm in exactly the same 50/50 unsure with the iPad. On Friday night, was in the Apple Store in Covent Garden London and I came within a whisker of buying it.

Got the money and it is a great device, but do I really need it ?

Also, when syncing with iTunes, do your existing paid for apps sync with the iPad as well as your iPhone. Having to pay twice for the same app to use on iPad and iPhone would put me off.

I think mifi is better. The ipad is cheaper too when it only needs wifi. 3 do one that's 5gig for £15. And you have the advantage of connecting your ipod and laptop too.

Yes they do. However some of them not specifically designed for the iPad will be stretched to fit the screen.

More likely to be April.
They tend to do 12 month life cycles.

But I would say if you're in the market for one now, I'd wait for the revamp.

It's a tough call, apparently glass makers (I'll learn to spell manufactorers/erers eventually) are gearing up to get product ready for a first quarter launch, he can't sit on his hands like he did with the original launch because as soon as he DOES announce a new model people are going to say "Well, 2 months? I'll wait, I'm not buying one now..."

I'll probably just spend the rest of the afternoon reading and re-reading the same reviews and putting myself off. But like I said, the money is burning a hole in my pocket at the moment..

First quarter is Jan-March/April.
I still think april for ipad2

iPods and iPhones have changed on the same month each year for the last 3-4 years now. I can't see the iPad being any different. The macbooks are odd months because they like to push out the new chipsets.

Agreed, the new iPad will be out in April and the only big addition is likely to be the facetime cameras which most of us won't be that bothered about.

You should be able to sync all of your iPhone apps (with the exception of any that will only run on an iPhone) to the iPad however in a lot of cases they will be the same size on your iPad as they were on the iPhone and will need to be zoomed, in which case you may feel that you want to get an iPad version if available.

When the iPad launch happened I was determined to be the first in line to get one. That the device was going to change how I use technology but honestly I don't see that it would actually do that.

Two of my freinds in work have got one and yes the ability to surf the web on it is nice and yes some of the applications are nice on it but honestly I still don't see me getting one. I think I would be too afraid of dropping/losing it, I still think it is a lot of money to pay for a device that is still very much controlled by the maker unless you jail break it.

Just get an iPod touch. It's exactly the same but smaller and you can fit it in your pocket.

I'm sure they will add a few other bells and whistles too. But FaceTime isn't important to me personally. More DRAM, a retina display and 1080p might be an incentive though

If you are rich and/or stupid it will be more than fine.

If not rich maybe you can flog it off quick when bored and with it's high price mystique still intact.

From what I've read I wouldn't hold your breath for retina display, the processing power isn't avaliable on a screen that size, and the battery would last about 20 minutes, more DRAM certainly would be nice though.

Not rich, got a bonus, am quite stupid though, which makes me the perfect Apple customer.

Just to add to the "I shouldn't get one" ticklist, I've already got an iPhone 4..

Don't be an Apple whore!
Spend your cash on a real one instead and I guarantee you'll be blown away.

If you get the WiFi one against getting the 3G one be aware you lose out on the integrated GPS as well.

My next one will be 3G and I'll just put my existing mobile broadband sim in it after trimming it or swapping it via my provider.

Retina is very unlikely.
The usuals of lighter, thinner, faster and a camera (not that the latter makes any odds to me).

I've heard talk of a smaller 7" model. Let's see.
