Recommend a digital camera for little sister

Hi guys,

Just a quick question, i want to get my little sis a camera for xmas (planning well in advance this time ), she will be 10 and does look after things pretty well.

I know a camera sounds a bit exquisit for a child, but she literally has tonnes of clothes from hand me downs and from people buying her things occasionally and doesnt need anything more. i think everyone will put together for a bike as hers is starting to get to small for her, but me and my brother will probs put together for this.

I've seen them vTech cameras, but the resolution on them isnt great, something like 640x480, and only have 64mb memory,so id like to get a proper camera.

It doesnt have to be great spec 3 megapixes would be max she would need a guess and it doesnt need to cost a lot. Plus preferablly one that recharges and doesnt take AA or AAA batteries.

But my main question is, can you get in a sense, camera skins ? or like a kind of clip on case that manufactured do for their cameras, i recall a while ago when i had my fuji finepix f700 zoom, Fuji did a underwater case for it, so somethig like that, but just for general wear and tear prevention and also just that little bit more protection...i know how annoying it can be to accidentally drop a new camera

any ideas welcome

thanks

£50...sorted. You don't get skins to protect against wear and tear. You get carry cases though, that's about it.

In all honesty though, I wouldn't suggest it for a 10 year old. There must be other better presents out there for her.

Jessops as mentioned by TheBigM, has a half price sale on at the moment so you could grab a bargain.. It does still depend on your budget though..

A couple of examples at the different pricing levels that have a good reputation, I would however buy an additional memory cary and a card reader from www.my.memory.co.uk much cheaper than Jessops will be...

Cameras at jessops that have had good reviews are:

Cheap end.

Mid price.

And Pricey

Very pricey... (for a first camera)

And a bundle,

All pretty good cameras, that should fit the bill, however don't forget a half reasonable Tripod..

I take it she has access to a computer for storing the pictures? You could maybe set her up with a Flickr account or similar, and, importantly, teach her about the privacy settings...

I have the brother/sister of that camera, and am very happy with it, the only downer is no optical zoom. But other than that is is a great tough camera, being water proof you can get some exciting shots, on /by the rivers.

My 7 year old nephew is very capable of looking after his DS and a camera.

I think its how you bring them up. They will need good computer/tech skills, this will help them build those skills.

The fuji finepix range are very user freindly and capable of good photos and video

3MP doesn't work anymore, its like trying to buy a 100MB harddrive.

I bought my son who was 5 at the time a second hand fuji finepix camera off fleabay for something like a tenner. Thought if he breaks it then not a huge loss but its been dropped a few time, gotten wet and rough handling and its still working fine. Only thing is the slide cover for the lens is a little tricky to close now and you need to have the knack.

Taught him how to handle it and take photos, about needing when you need a flash and not moving the camera, framing the photo, zoom, basic stuff. He loves it, takes it everywhere we go and has produced some absolutely amazing photos, everyday stuff viewed through the eyes of a child (yes, I told him its not polite to take pictures up ladies skirts, lol).

Anyway OP I think its great present and if the current rangeof Fuji cameras are like the old one, I would recommend it, good quality, easy to use and well built.

Only when you hard print them.
For purely online stuff 3MP is usually far too much.

I would have thought 3MP is fine. 3MP will go to 10x8 easily, and you wont see any difference at 6X4.

I had a 3MP canon powershot that was great (and cost £200 at the time)- the screen went funny (although its a free repair, I think), and I upgraded now - but there is absolutely nothing wrong with any of the pictures taken on the canon

3Mp is more pixels than a HD TV.

A proper camera is far far better than a toy camera, which just will never get used.

It is like saying a 300mhz cpu is fine. Technology has moved on. Anyone with decent tech isn't going to build a 3megapixel sensor, anyone left building such a sensor has inferior technology. 3mp in theory will do 8x10. In theory in big quotes. Any sensor that old and cheap does not provide 3 mp of actual pixel detail, no where close, which is why those low megapixel cellphone cameras are such shiite. Many cheap cameras now do 720p video, but if you look closely at whatthey produce, it is lacking in actual detail. so comparing against hdtv, is no good, real hd cameras provide 2megapixels of actual detail. You won't get that until you get into high end digital slr's that can do video.
