Why wouldn't it? There's nothing actually stopping you from listening to/reading them, so why is it any more unfair than a fan of the books or audios being told they don't count? Rather less fair, that, I feel.

... It's never nice to be insulted, however can I politely suggest you remember this next time you call people who disagree with you on here "morons"?

Because the tiny amount of people who would feel happy at their inclusion is really not worth excluding/confusing the extra millions.

A competent writer could do the one without doing the other.

Pot to kettle, I'm afraid, you've insulted me many times and you seem incapable of NOT insulting RTD, a man who is not on this forum (presumably) and therefore has no comeback, so I'd think twice before reacting this way, if you don't like it, don't dish it out.

I take your point on that one, I just think there is a lot to cram in. As long as it doesn't hugely contradict then I see no problem. But that's just me.

Oh no, ting, I've just insulted you (sort of) on another thread. (The one about the Christmas special). You know I mean it affectionately don't you?

JohnBoy answered for me there. Remember you've had the fun of reading/listening to that extra stuff, because you like it, but if I don't want to for whatever reason, as is the case with most viewers, I shouldn't feel my enjoyment of the TV programme is spoiled.

Thank you both. I do admit I shouldn't have said it and I am apologising for it now. I just sensed so much attitude coming from them that I felt ok giving it back. Lesson learned.

You're missing my point: you don't have to cram in anything, you don't have to reference anything, you just have to not write anything that explicitly contradicts anything previously established. In Jo Grant's case, for instance, you wouldn't have to mention her divorce, only not mention her being still married.

I didn't know Jo was divorced from that nice Dr Jones. Now I'm upset. See, you're better off not knowing.

I did get that, I just don't agree they should matter as much as the story.

But I shouldn't need to feel my enjoyment is spoiled by seeing it dismissed out of hand-and as I said to John Boy, it shouldn't be necessary for either to happen!

If it makes you feel better, there's nothing to say they couldn't have remarried later (I suppose. Though it would feel like a cheat, to me).

Eh! You shouldn't have a problem with me either, you can't pick and choose who can insult you, that's mean! And I apologised. And I meant it. And I am lovely!

It totally altered her established character-not a character established thirty years before, but a character that had developed since then.I don't, y'know.”

Nope, if that happens it will indeed be the fault of RTD, because he has no respect for either the fans who bought the other stories or the writers who created them. Which is what I'd expect from an egotist like him. It still won't validate your opinion.”

You still don't have to ignore it, or change the characters motivation beyond recognition. A decent writer could make the character consistent with all previous appearances without needing to reference any of them directly. Davies chose not to because he was arrogant enough to believe his personal vision was more important than previous writers' work.”

The highlighted bit......doesn't the fact that you dismiss the RTD years because it didn't fit your views of what DOctor Who should be then make you exactly what you call him??? Its definitely not RTD who is throwng the toys out of the pram

and by the way if RTD was to take in the canoncity of the so called books and plays....then which ones should he have exactly accepted??? Whe they contradict each other as well.....or is it that th books and the audio plays can condradict as much as they want but if RTD dos then he is the devil???

The important thing is that as a writer and producer of the show, he only had to think of two particular viewers who made the majority of the audince watching School Reunion....and that was th those who last saw SJS in Hand of Fear, but didn't go onto spin off media....and those hwo like me met her for the first time!.....not the few thousands who had been reading and listening to contradictory spin-off media.....where she was either married or not...or something else....In School Renion, we were given a Sarah Jane that was created and loved by those who created her, and played her....one that doesn't in terms of "event" timeline contradict the Five Doctors or K9 and Company....because in the former, she didn't really speak to the other Doctors, she had no idea Five was Five, as for all she knew he could have been One or TWo, what with them being there....and in with the fact that we saw K9 in School Reunion, shows that the it doesn't contradict the K9 spin-off. Nowin terms of character....we were shown that SJS was getting on with her life as a Journo, waiting for the Doctor didn't mean that she wasn't getting on with her life....the Doctor says to her "your doing what we always did" or something like that....so her life didn't stop....but even when you take in the Five Doctor's and the K9 show....none of them lether know one way or the other whether the Fourth Doctor survived the trip to Gallifrey...as he never came back.....and being a time traveller he could send her K9 at anypoint of timeline, so again doesn't prove to her that he is still alive...hence the "I thought you died!"...and its reasonable that part of her did think that...even if another part didn't...and when seeing her old friend (best friend as you yourself feel)...her fears as well as her joys will be shared with him....

Five Doctor's doesn't do her character that well...she is mostly a screamer....but worst of all, the friend she cried for in Planet of the Spiders, was in front of her...and not much of a reaction...instead moaning at him....as great as Five Doctor's was....it wasn't the SJS that we had before....

and as for Jo...well whether RTD has so called respect for audios and other spin-off tht majority of Who fans have no clue about....one thing is for sure as his recent interview claims....he is taking into consideration that character that Letts created...and surely that is all should matter...

Oh and by the way, anyone who wanted Who to be a success, and wanted to bring SJS at the time she was brought back, would have done what RTD did, yes that includes Moff....and ignore the spin-offs that only a thousand or so cared about....even himself (considering that he is obviously a fan of the spin-off, and hence adapted some for his era, and the writers of those audios/books have about the same amount of respect for their work, when they are so quick to let it be adpated for the small screen)

Actually I think we have quite a few people on here who know a lot about Who and are happy and excited to share their knowledge. I fear those people don't always get the credit they deserve because they are less vocal.

Disclaimer: I'm definitely not one of them.

You're concerned about a divorce which was mentioned in the novels but what about her having two different children in separate spin-offs?

Doesn't he? He seems to.

Two different children? Her home life becomes more complicated by the minute. Was she cheating on nice Clifford? I've gone off her.

You see where reading spin-offs leads. I'm glad I don't.

Damn for got to say what I feel about the point of this story!!!! *facepalm*

I realy quite love it!....its not perfect....its very smulshy...but it gets me each time....and its beautiful to look at...and more importantly, its cleverness is subtle....I mean I love the wa we find out that the Ship is named after reinette....truly genius!!!

But it isn't the best story for me...Midnight takes that place...

he does know a lot....and I have a hell of a lot respect for that knowledge....but I wish he would just use that knowlegde to share rather than patronise.....or not pick and choose in order to use it to criticise the RTD years....but be consistant with that criticism

As far as I know, only her son Matthew is mentioned in any spin-off. Unless you're counting the, in my opinion apocryphal, claim that she had a daughter in that old UNIT DWM special in the early nineties, but that would be like counting the stories in the annuals. It isn't a real contender in the canon stakes.
