The Empty Child/The Doctor Dances. Very imaginative, great setting, great characters, scary, wonderful comic moments that don't detract from the drama, conclusion that isn't too obvious but makes sense and a happy ending that doesn't feel tacky.

Looks like I ma the first to mention it...and maybe the only one...but for me its Midnight! Just everything about it is brilliant!!!!! Its atmospheric, it has depth, it is small scale yet epic in many ways, the performances are magnificent, and well I just can never get enough of it...

other contenders are The Mind Robber, Caves, Genesis, Waters of Mars.....

The final scene has it all: funereal music as Susan is left behind, while the Doctor, Barbara and Ian struggle to keep stiff upper lips.

I don't recall the final scene of DM, but Sara has already died by that point. Is the final scene " oh what a tragedy that Sara died?" or is it "right, we're off to new adventures now, my boy!"

Dalek Invasion of Earth gets inside an epic story, while Dalek Masterplan gives new characters and new locations week after week. DM's great, but DIOE is greater.”

Good argument! Still prefer DM though! But both are early classics.

A lot of people mention Genesis. Don't get it myself. An enjoyable enough story, well directed and certainly above average, although very padded. I think it would struggle to make my Top 30 or even Top 50.

I have to admit, people often say its quite padded, but I don't find it to be the case....I really enjoy all of it....love Four, Sarah and Harry together...and I guess the "does the Doctor have the right" scene is simply iconic.....which I guess is what makes it a huge success for some

I see your point and I especially agree about the padding but what I think raises it to 'classic' status for many , well for myself anyway, is the sheer power of Michael Wisher's performance as Davros. If it wasn't for that performance I agree that it may have been just an above average story, maybe.

Edit.

And of course as crazzyaz7 says it does have the iconic 'should I shouldn't I scene.

I have to admit, I'm not a great fan of Genesis either, but there again I'm not really a fan of Season 12 full stop. There's nothing wrong with the story as such, Michael Wisher is superb as Davros but the whole overall style of the story isn't my cup of tea. Much preferred the Baker/Sladen relationship more in Season 13 once Harry had gone.

I think for me, the best Doctor Who story of all time is still:

Genesis of the Daleks - and that would make a cracking film. For the new series, then you can't go wrong with Midnight. Much better than Blink and definitely scarier.

That's my opinion.

Genesis has to be the greatest Dalek story at least

My faves from each era:

Classic Who: The Daleks and The Silurians.

New Who: Gridlock, Midnight, Silence in the Library/Forest of the Dead and the majority of series 5.

Overall however, I would probably have to say The Pandorica Opens and The Big Bang as my all time favourite

For greatest story of all, I'd definitely go for Blink. From the classic series (like smithers 3162, I feel you do have to consider them seperately) I'd take Pyramids of Mars.

I don't recall that one. Was Moses in it?

Oh I'm a Harry Grl though....by all means I should get annoyed with his "old girl" type comments...but he is so charming!!!

D'you know, I would have to agree: it took the classic "Whodunnit" formula, shook it up a little and the final showdown with SV7 getting his brain pierced with the laser scalpel and poor old D...hmmm, I'm tempted to say 84 but someone will know, sacrificing himself at the end...plus the chilling "I will kill Acting Commander Tuse" "I will kill Leela" "I will kill The Doctor"...and all done with red bicycle reflectors...a true classic.

(Oh and the Production Design is fabulous)

I like Harry too!!!

My point was, I find Season 13 a lot lighter in tone compared to 12 because of the Baker/Sladen Partnership hitting it's peak. This only happened once Harry had left the show, it wasn't a criticism of the character at all!!!!!

It was D84, he even has his own action figure now (but it was Toos, not Tuse). I agree, Robots is a great story-and even has a nice performance from the normally decidedly wooden Brian Croucher as Borg...

Thing is, it's not really a Dalek story, it's a story which has a few Dalek scenes in it! It would be way down my list of stories featuring Daleks - Masterplan (obviously) is the best, and others better than Genesis (from original Who) include Revelation, Remembrance, The Chase, Planet, Invasion of Earth, Evil and The Daleks. It's better than Resurrection, Destiny, Power and Death.

Classic Who - Dalek invasion of earth
Modern Who -Human Nature/Family of Blood
I can and do watch both these stories over and over again. The ending of Family of Blood is just so moving

It was that story which got my dad into Nu-Who. He loved the setting and the story, and of course it was followed by Blink, and again by Derek Jacobi playing The Master! He felt he missed out!

Then 'Last of the Time Lords' aired, and...well, he hated it again
