Moffat on Christmas Special and series 6
Doctor Who - The Brilliant Book 2011 has an interview with Moffat in which he indicates the River Song reveal will not be a "cheat" cop out among other things.
Link to SFX article about it here.. http://www.sfx.co.uk/2010/09/21/moff...nd-season-six/ On the Christmas Special: “This one’s incredibly Christmassy. That’s true of the previous ones but I wanted to go for broke. It’s easily the most Christmassy thing you’ll ever see. It’s a huge, sentimental, lovely, jeopardy-driven story. It’s the Christmas special I’d like to see. It’s like a compilation of every Christmas movie. A big Christmas treat. But that doesn’t mean it’s without scares, and that doesn’t mean it’s without heartbreak. It has genuine tragedy in it.” On the story threads left hanging from last year: “Nothing will be left hanging forever. Some things will be addressed relatively quickly. We’re going into the silence and what they [our italics] are… There’s been a sort of tradition, which I semi-followed through with the crack, of there just being a sort of meme through the series, and I think, actually, a bigger mystery and a bigger story is possible now. I’m going to handle it slightly differently next year.” On River Song’s true identity: “That’s absolutely coming. You’re going to find out very soon, and that means we have to do it next series, really… The critical thing here is I want to explain who she is, not explain away who she is. If you don’t deliver on most people’s expectations, and you just say, ‘Ooh, she’s a specially programmed android who believes she’s the Doctor’s wife,’ people will go, ‘That‘s a cheat.’ You can’t do that… It’s a really good story, and it’s sort of the story of next year.” |

Oh dear, if the Christmas special is sentimental tingramretro won't like it.
I hope River gets a good story, she's one of my favourite characters. I think Moff and I have different definitions of what a "cheat" is, judging from The BIg Bang. But, as always, it sounds great and I can't wait! |

Good. I hope it's heartbreaking and emotional and full of sentiment. Just like Christmas TV of old!

I've already decided I'm looking forward to the Christmas one. I'm not familiar with the singer lady, but she was choirgirl of the year or something so has the lungs. A sherry, a sing song and hopefully a monster. Lovely.
Right - Song's not an android then. That was a wasted bet. *tears up slip* |

Must say the idea behind this years Xmas special does appeal to me a lot more than the ideas from the last few have. If your going to have a Christmas Special it should feel like Christmas in my view.

It felt Christmasy the first few minutes and last few minutes, the rest of it didn't feel Christmasy at all.
I am really very excited for this year's Christmas special. I think...well I hope that Mr M is going to hit the nail on the head here and deliver exactly what we hope for. Superb! |

I hope so too. It's a long cold wait from December to April so I always like them to be a good one.

I like the Christmas Specials - they are a one-off, and can do silly things if they like (unrelated to the series). That's what Christmas is all about. (apart from last year, of course).
I look forward to this "Christmas Carol-style" story very much!

I'm not really a fan of the DW Xmas Specials, but anything with Michael Gambon in it
is usually worth watching. |

Really hoping this is an improvement on past efforts. Granted, some of them grew on me a bit over time (The Next Doctor is one that springs to mind as a grower), but for the most part they were a bit of a let down.
Fingers crossed for some Moffatt magic.

I'm really looking forward to River Song's story being resolved. I didn't care much about knowing after the Angels 2-parter but at the end of The Big Bang I just wanted to know there and then who/what she is! I agree with Moffat though with what he says about not just wanting to say who/what she is in an offhand comment, we need a proper explanation within a good story.

The first non David Tennant Christmas special makes things different this year, of course. And the first Steven Moffat penned Christmas episode makes it exciting.
Now Matt Smith is settled into his role (very nicely, IMO) this could be his finest hour... |
