I don't always agree with the NME, but that isn't a bad list.

Personally would have had Johnny Cash's Hurt at number one.

Just out of curiousity, since the song featured in the worst list, I wonder where Joan Jett's cover of I Love Rock And Roll placed.

I'm not that keen on Muse's version of Feeling Good to be honest.

Take That Cover Nirvana

EDIT: oh dear god...take that's cover is awful.

Ahhh not the Muse megaphone! I really wish Matt would drop the song when on tour. Most of the Muse fans on their forums hate it as it's been so overplayed and would love some rarer songs to take it's place

It's quite a biased list. Biased towards the type of music NME supports and it's readers listen to. All of the acts in the top 10 of best covers (minus Marvin Gaye) are rock/indie acts. Whereas all the acts in the top 10 worst covers are pop acts apart from maybe limp Bizkit.

I have to admit, I rolled my eyes before even clicking on the link, knowing it was going to be incredibly biased.

biased maybe but quite accurate imo, artists bands that play instruments are just generally better at doing covers. they've got the tools to put a different spin on songs and take them to a whole new level

My poor ears, why on earth did I click on that link

Must admit I'm not a fan of the Muse cover, too overblown for me, and I really would have put Cash at number 1, his cover of Hurt is stunning. Other than that not a bad list.

Yep, originally by The Crickets and has been covered by The Bobby Fuller Four, The Clash and sort of by The Dead Kennedy's

Don't think Feeling Good is the best. No way. I'd go Nina Simone; I Put A Spell On You, or Soft Cell's Tainted Love cover.

I can't disagree with the best covers (although I like other covers personally, I can see where they are coming from with that list), but the worse covers is nonsense.

Now, I'm not saying they're good covers. All of them are terrible, but with a couple of exceptions, they're hardly "known" covers, are they? I mean Take That - Smells Like Teen Spirit? Who knew this even existed before looking at that list?

Surely one or two of the X-Factor lot should be there. Look at the travesties that were Hallelujah and Run, stripped from their original versions and given a glitzy "in your face" pop treatment! I thought the "cool guys" at NME would have jumped on those bandwagons.

Oh dear, the NME, they've sadly become the Daily Mail of music.

What did you expect? A list composed entirely of German folk? Its an indie rock focussed magazine, that would be like being surprised that a "smash hits" (Does that still exist??) was pop focussed or Kerrang was a little heavy on Metal.

Whats next, Country Life magazine magazine biased toward those from rural areas? The Morning Star a little bit left wing? Heat magazine focussing to much on celeb gossip and neglegting to tackle the big political issues of the day?

It's a sound list, though I'm sure there are better and worse covers that have been overlooked. My personal favourite covers would include Robert Wyatt's Shipbuilding and Bauhaus' Ziggy Stardust.

I should point out that the lack of William Shatners cover of "Common People" in the best list basically means I can't take the rest of it seriously.

Obviously it's to be expected but the music forum isnt exclusively for people who like indie rock so I think it's worth pointing out.

Yes but, its a list in an indie magazine......

I don't mean to sound harsh, but what did you expect from the NME?

Of course they are going to produce a list which is relevant to their readers, not the Digital Spy music forum.
