Those infuriating training clips

Just clicked on the latest training clip of James Jordan and Pamela Stephenson on the BBC site and not once do we get a glimpse of their footwork . The same with the Gavin and Natalie clip. Is this a deliberate attempt by the BBC to wind people up.? How are we expected to judge dancing if we don't see the footwork?

I think it's very early to be judging technique. I'm mainly watching to see how the couples are gelling.

It was their first training session, so even if we did see their footwork, I doubt it would be of much use in judging potential!

Perhaps the BBC just don't want to give too much away before the 1st show.

Personally I've enjoyed them. At just over a minute its more about the 'talky bits' than actually assessing their dancing. When a new one appears I click on to see what the celeb/pro make of each other and how they feel it's going.

Due to the recession, BBC negotiated a cheaper deal with the camera crew by getting a third off.

Unfortunately, the BBC thought it was a third off the price, but it turns out it's a third off the dancers

Any hope that the cutbacks mean they can't afford swirly running steadicam guy?

We've got to judge dancing now?

Also, dancing, funnily enough, is not all about footwork.

Personally, my view is that far too many people focus on footwork instead of things like connection, musicality, posture, and so on.

Well, to be fair, it's not difficult to show at least in parts some footwork. We want to see the participants' everything, not, of course, EVERYTHING of them, but of their training.

Then again, I agree, it's too early to quibble about footwork, because there will basically be none of those worth seeing at this juncture.

I also really hope the cost cutting means the swirly cameraman and the equipment used for that wretched job is OVER.

These are the first training clips. More interviews really.

Ann W obviously agrees with you. According to the training video she said she would get on better if Anton had no feet because she kept kicking them.

As a side-effect they knocked a third off the audience total.

Don't say that! It's hard enough to get tickets as it is!

Have you seen the photos?

Makes the videos look good.

They could be better, but I think they just want to show enough to keep the interest simmering until the first show.

Well someone's got to!

Perhaps, as someone who knows, you could help me out. Or anyone else for that matter. I agree it's not all about footwork, but have you seen Jimmi's training clip? He's showing some good moves, but what's with the hip action? I'd like to see if any of it is coming from the legs. I'm looking forward to his dance though...

A very large part of ballroom dancing is about footwork (whole books written about it) and without correct foot (and leg) work a dance starts to lose some of what makes it unique. So it is reasonable to expect to see it (In other types of dance it might be less important.) Obviously the other elements are also very important. As said previously by SCD Observer you really expect to be able to see the whole thing.

(Actually although there is quite a lot of noise about footwork from the judges, there is very little in quality comment, presumably because they think the general public would find it a bit boring. )

SB, there are other people better qualified to comment than me, but to me it looks wrong. He is wiggling his hips from side to side although that might be because he's doing something different from the standard cha cha steps. As you've kind of implied, good hip action in cha cha and rumba comes from a very straight standing leg and then relaxing the one other hip downwards before moving off the standing leg. And so it also has a backwards and forwards element to the action (it's a sort of figure 8 rotation). I wouldn't have known it was a cha cha except for the New Yorkers. Perhaps he is doing some advanced steps I've never seen. Can any advanced dancers help?

Oh actually looking at it again, I don't really recognise what Flavia is doing either (but obviously she knows her stuff ) and so perhaps his hip action is ok for the steps he is doing. It doesn't look much like the usual cha cha to me though.
