Not sure if this thread has been done or not, so apologies straight away if I'm going over old ground...

I was thinking earlier which stories have had the most satisfying endings in old and new 'Who'

My choices are

Old Who:

Pyramids of Mars: especially seeing as Robert Holmes had no idea how to end it, then he hit on the idea of the 8minute time delay (I think) between Mars and Earth, giving the Doc enough time to save the day...

New Who:

Girl in the Fireplace: I remember thinking throughout the story 'what the hell is going on...' and then in the final shot, with no dialogue it all came together and made sense...

Are we talking about plot resolutions or last scenes?

Classic Who: I'd say Caves Of Androzani without a doubt. It seriously kicked off in those last five minutes and then there was the regeneration itself. Really edge of the seat stuff.

New Who: Much as I love Doomsday I'm gonna give this one to Utopia. For impact endings, it can't be beaten. Yana is revealed as The Master, Regenerates, nicks the TARDIS then we're left with The Doctor stranded. Have to say though, the ending of Turn Left was equally as good as well, with the whole Bad Wolf thing and The Doctor realising Rose is back on the scene.

P.S, was seriously excited by the trailer for Stolen Earth at the end of Turn Left so that's another reason!!!!

Turn Left - Donna throwing herself in front of a car(?) to maintain the time line
The Doctor Dances - Everybody Lives (best ending in NuWho)
Father's Day - (see Turn Left)
Curse Of Fenric - The Doctor having to turn on Ace
Remembrance Of the Daleks - The Doctor tricking Davros
Earthshock - Adric trying to save everyone and ending up keeping time on track (best of classic Who)
The Visitation - The Doctor starting the great fire of London

1963-1966-didnt see hartnell's era(?)

1966-1969-same again(?)

1970-74-when John Pertwee changed into Tom Baker-simple change(?)

1974-1981-got to say Logopolis(think so) when Tom Baker changed into Peter Davison!

1981-84-Adric's death when it went silent and his badge was shown(very sad)-Peter Davison<?>

1984-1987-When Colin Baker won his time trial and went travelling again in his tardis with Bonnie Langford(odd choice)-trial of the a timelord(?)

1987-1989-the end of the final episode of the show before it got took off the tv, Sylvestor Mcoy and ace strode off in the sunset together-dont know the name of the episode

1996-soppy ending to Paul Mcgann's reign when he had a nice cuppa and his record got stuck(duh)!-the film

2005-Christopher eccleston-series one -best ending when he changed into |David Tennant in front of Billie Piper!-Parting of ways

2006-David tennant-series 2-best ending when he about to start his tardis after saying goodbye to Rose and he sees Donna Noble in her wedding dress!-Doomsday

2007-David tennant-Series 3-Best ending when he rises again from being a golum like creature thanks to the master-Last of the timelords

2008-David Tennant-series 4-Best ending is when he says to Donna "You were right , I do need someone" this is is in Fires of pompelli

2009-specials-David Tennant-Best ending was when David Morrisey's character invited him to xmas dinner in "The Next Dr", the other specials had good endings but some were sad like "Voyage of the damned" when Kylie's character died

2010-The eleventh hour -got to be the best out of series 5 as it introduced us to one of the best assistants ever Amy pond and we see her kids drawings and her wedding dress at the end of that episode

I agree. That was perfect.

Got to say I liked the reveal at the end of Girl In the Fireplace too, although the episode as a whole isn't one of my favourites. Also the 'let's give all the kids nightmares' ending to Blink, with the shots of various statues during the Doctor's monologue. And the final few minutes of Utopia. Liked the scene just before the end of Bad Wolf too with the sudden extermination.

Of what little classic who I have seen I'd have to go with Caves of Androzani.

Hartnell - last scene in Daleks invasion of Earth where he says goodbye to Susan
Troughton - last scene in Wargames where he says goodbye to Zoe & Jamie and then gets forcibley regenerated
Pertwee - last scene of The Green Death where he rides off alone in Bessie into the sunset
T Baker - last scene in The Hand of Fear where he says goodbye to Sarah Jane
Davison - def the last 5 minutes of Caves of Androzani
C Baker - last scene of Revelation of the Daleks where he says to Peri "I know we'll go to......"
McCoy - last scene in Survival mainly because it was the last scene of "clasic" Who
Ecclestone - has to be the regeneration scene
Tennant - keep changing my mind on this one, at the moment its the end scene in The Next Doctor but also in the running is the end of Doomsday, last 10 mins of The end of time & last 5 mins of Journeys end.
Smith - last scene in Vincent & The Doctor

Plot resolution has to be Donna becoming part time lord in Journey's End and favourite ending was in the episode before:

"I'm sorry, it's too late....... I'm regenerating!"

Had me squirming in anticipation for a whole week!

Old Who - 'Caves of Androzani' or 'Earthshock'. Both were really powerful, I think. Especially Earthshock - I remember first watching it and had that feeling of "no no this is all going wrong, why is it going wrong" - just a feeling of hopelessness. Great stuff!

New Who - 'Utopia', all the way. The last ten minutes were the most exciting I've ever found Doctor Who, not least because of the amazing transformation between nice Derek Jacobi and nasty Derek Jacobi, the seemingly painful regeneration and the magnificent score that went with it. It also seemed like a hopeless situation until I remembered about the time-travelling wrist watch. Damn those things!

Nu series - I am going to have to go with the final scene in Love and Monsters, which is Elton's Speech to camera. It's really a beautiful and poignant speech that to me sums up the enduring appeal of the show. I posted this in another thread the other day funny enough

Classic series - last scene in Inferno, where The Doctor mocks The Brig, makes a dramatic exit only to reppear after the TARDIS (off camera) lands in the rubbish tip....classic!
