The same Apple that replaced my 3GS for a brand new replacement 65 days after my warranty expired due to a dirty dock connector? No, of course they won't replace it.

Apple have absolutely fantastic Customer Service.

Never had any problems with Apple products myself but from my relatives who have had problems their customer service has been top notch. At least you get one thing you pay for

Sorry for delay replying (in which time the thread has degraded into the usual state threads decend into once the apple bashers arrive. Locking normally occurs shortly after)

An out of warranty repair is a repair either outside of the warranty period (not in your case) or for something which would not normally be covered by the warranty (applies in your case)

As some others have hinted in the thread you may get lucky if you take it in to the apple store and get a nice genius. Though at worst you'd be looking at the £140 I mentioned in my post for a repair not covered by warranty (and when I say repair 99.9% of the time it's just replaced with a refurb unit and the remaining warranty transfers over to the new phone or you'll get a 90 day warranty if this is longer which it won't be in your case)

Hope that helps and now I'll let the thread continue degrading into the usual playground behaviour that most apple threads on these forums do decend into

recently my brother bought an ipod touch for his daughter. He went into an apple store and was told by the sales rep, dont buy one yet. There will be an announcement this evening, where the new ipod touch (4th gen) will be launched/announced.

He asked me, so I looked on the web found no info. Rang apple and the person I talked to didnt even know about the announcement, she was clueless. Rang another apple store, again they knew nothing about the announcement let alone a new ipod touch. Is this the great customer service your referring to?

A broken screen is out of warranty as it's not covered by support guarantees.

It'll cost £140 no matter what they have to replace. On the iPhone 4 it'll probably be a new phone because it's so much harder to replace the front glass on an iPhone 4 than a 3G(or 3Gs). When I shattered my iPhone 4 screen they had to replace the entire thing with a new device there on the spot.

You'll have to book and Apple Care appointment in advance though.

Well you can be 99% another certain there was a reason they did this. A major defect or something similar they they actually admitted to.

Apple is renowned for its 'nickle and dime' support with plenty of iPhones with a warranty getting refused according to Watchdog.

Ive only just bought it cant believe a £140 bill is a possibility. Think I will book an appt with the Apple Store see how I get on. (when I had my 3G I received very good customer service)

Can you not replace the screen yourself using Apple parts?

How recent?

The 4th Gen iPod Touch was just released this month.

You might be able to but if you did you wouldn't be covered under warranty anymore. I'd try and see if they'll goodwill swap it (lots of "I didn't think it would be so prone to damage blah blah blah") but be prepared for them wanting £140. You may get lucky, you may not

Normally insurance would be the best way of preventing this but I can't speak for the other networks but O2's insurance is now so pants and the excess is so high that when you factor in the excess and the premiums it's probably cheaper to run uninsured and pay the £140 to apple if it gets damaged (though you'll be screwed if it's lost or stolen but then it's been 10 years since I've lost or had stolen a phone). I have mine on my home contents insurance and pay the same price to insure two iPhones (mine and my other half's) that O2 would want for one (and the excess is £50 which is better than O2). If you have home contents cover it may be something worth looking at to protect you in the future

My brother went to the apple store on the same day as the announcement. From memory the announcement was about 6pm. I rang on the same day (around 11am), it was only about 3 weeks ago/first week of september. Sorry cant remember the exact date.

I know he needed it for the 10th September, he didnt get it delivered until the 13th September.

So what are you complaining about? The guy that said an announcement was being made was correct. If you're complaining that when you rang Apple and another store they didn't confirm it then that's simply because they aren't supposed to. Apple never admit details of new models until their official announcement.

The first guy that said wait for the announement was unofficially helping your brother out, risking his job in the process. That sounds like above and beyond customer service.

Can't you call Autoglass out to inject it, and it wont effect your no claims.

I think it'll be a pane in the glass to replace the screen yourself, especially if it goes wrong as it'll leave you out of warranty.

But you would have thought the other apple people would have at least known about an announcement, which they didnt. This is poor IMO. Fair enough, they may not know the contents of the announcement, but should have known there was one.

I agree that the guy my brother saw did go above what was required. However I have seen from a lot of store reps. In places like currys, sony, most phone shops, clothes shops etc...that isnt unique.

Don't see what your problem is.

Because Apple don't make announcements until the conference they have a store policy of 14 days.

If you buy a new iPod Nano and a new one is released within 2 weeks - you can return it.

As for Currys....what are they gonna say? "don't buy this Samsung phone. They'll have a new one out next week, and the week after, and the week after, and the week after, and the week after.".

Carphone warehouse certainly wouldn't let you replace your phone if you'd bought one an a new one came out a week later. Apple are great like that.

And I'd trust Watchdog to be as calm and non sensationalist as the daily Mail.

Here's another vote for Apple. Took my two and a half year macbook in as the touchpad had stopped working. The store noticed a small crack in the casing that couldn't have been caused by dropping it and replaced the entire keyboard / top free of charge.

While this was being done I was talking about the (then) potential new iPhone four release and mentioned that my eighteen month old iPhone three had a small, yet odd, mark on the screen which I could never polish off.

They replaced the phone as well.

Not only impressed, but relieved too. I was back in Birmingham for New Year and there isn't an Apple store anywhere near me.

My dock connector problem was noted as a crack to the back casing (I'd never even noticed it) and 2 months after the warranty had expired I had a brand new iPhone. Apple Customer Service is absolutely fantastic, no doubt about it.

It was a known problem so close to warranty they cannot call it wear and tear.
A high percentage crack under warranty. Its been discussed here many a time.

edit - in fact it seems that you posted here the problem so it was in fact your third one. You had two fail on you, one under warranty.

How long will this one last? Good service, a crackingly bad machine,
Obviously f you had paid only £99 and it was your third phone it could be a case of 'you get what you pay for'.

Sometimes your home contents insurance will cover accidental damage. It's worth checking out assuming you (or whoever you live with) have contents insurance.

My wife lost her iphone 3g and it was covered, and my kids broke the screen on the tv and that was covered too.

I'm not sure how Apple CS is "absolutely fantastic" for fixing/replacing your device due to a known and admitted design fault?

(the 3G and 3GS both suffered from similar plastic cracking issues, as did the plastic MacBooks for that matter. Can Apple get anything right?)

Think about it.
A glass phone that only they can repair at £140 a pop.
So a reasonable estimate is that 20% will break and most will cough up the dough.

Pure genius.
