How does it work with their library of tracks? Do they buy their music as we would do via an iTunes type service and then pay additional royalties each time they play a track? Could they play literally any song by any Smooth currently featured artist if they chose to, or would they have to add it to their existing library of material?

Stationband group libraries are updated every week when new releases are out. They are supplied by record companies in the past their cd (and record in some cases) collection would have been copied ontoa computer playout system.

No professional radio station would use I tunes or play an mp3 because the quality is not good enough. It will either be wav or mp2. It takes up more space but disk space is so cheap these days it's not an issue. It's certainly rare for a station to buy a song in order to play it on air.

Smaller srations will not have a big library but if a song is added to the playlist that they don't have, they'll be able to get.it from group hq usually.

Chart poditions mean nothing when fetermiming how popular a song is with an sudience. Plenty if number 1's are awful and unpopular whereas pkentuy of songs that never charted are loved by an audience.
Indeed so, but I was making the point that some of the songs they have started to play are considered 'obscure' in some circles (not by me) It's good to hear songs that are not played very often on mainstream radio being played on Smooth.

Certainly made a change from what they have been playing for the past few weeks.

This comment neatly allows me to make a point from a few days ago when a poster wrote about the alleged popularity of certain Elton John singles over others, and cited Candle In The Wind as popular and Sacrifice as not so much, which seems rather surprising considering when people had to part with hard cash to buy these two pieces of music, Candle In The Wind missed the top ten, plus has been tainted for many by being associated with the now mawkish Diana rewrite version, yet Sacrifice by Elton became his biggest solo hit song and a 5 week long No1 hit for him.

Yeh,right.and those 500 songs will form the basis of the 501 songs yod ll hear on the station for the next three years.Interesting to see in the blub there 'over the the three days you wont't hear the same song more than once' Ooh>I think a nerve has been hit...and yes during a countdown I wouldn't EXPECT to hear the same track twice. Are Smooth taking the listeners for fools again?
Still all this 'countdown' mullarkey will at least give the 'Kid' something to say to bolster out his 'that was,,and next' announcements.
Not convinced.Still think the best place for the 'Kid' would be the recorded announcements at a train station. He;d be in his element there.

Agreed total rubbish. Whenever they say chosen by you its utter tosh. Just another global lie and apart from the odd song the majority will Be the normal smooth stuff. However if the old gmg smooth did this it would have been worth a listen. Do smooth have 500 songs in their playlists anymore.

CANDLE IN THE WIND ALERT!

Since 6pm it sounds like they are playing exactly the same songs in exactly the same order from a previous show a few days ago. Olivia Newton-John was played with Hopelessly Devoted To You at the same time last week not long past 6pm. This is shocking tonight. It literally sounds like I'm listening to a repeat show itself.

That would have been a better time to do it. Like Capital used to do with their yearly Hall Of Fame.

I am surprised they are doing anything like this at all,
Other than the Andy Pebbles soul train, The one thing that i liked about the old Smooth Radio was some of the special programs they did like the Northern Soul shows with Richard Searling & The Documentaries at holiday times?? I dont think theses will continue!!!!!

Much as I really like Kool & The Gang's Get Down On It, it is now playing on Smooth Radio, the third time I have heard it playing between 7pm & 8pm inside 2 weeks, and I don't listen every single night at this time either!
Unbelievably this has just happened yet again, same song, same time. Make that 4 times now.

From the link it says Smooth are providing the list of 500 songs all your vote will do is put them in order. What a complete and utter farce.

I think you could be right you know. I am now hearing 'A Different (bloody) Corner'. I am sure that was included too.

A DIFFERENT CORNER ALERT!

Just playing again now. This is a truly stunning night for repetition, barely believable. Even at the time some of these songs were actually hits in the charts they probably didn't get such frequent play on Radio 1.

(Hi JC , tonight seems above and beyond the normal repeating. It's the almost the same show from within the past week or so in large portions)

Steve Winwood next....what's the guessing it's Valerie?

Hello RT, yes I do get a sense of déjà vu this evening. I think someone may have stuck the wrong tape on.

I'm hardly listening around the clock. Mostly just to David Jensen between 6pm and 8pm, so if I am picking up on this amount of repetition on such a modest amount of time, I barely imagine what people who listen for hours on end day after day must be picking up on.

Surely this must be so dispiriting to a seasoned DJ/broadcaster such as "The Kid" when at the controls.

I listen in the car for as long as I can bear (no DAB in there unfortunately) and also after midnight if I can. The station takes on a whole new play list after midnight.

Yes strange isn't it.They play the stuff that probably doesn't 'test'as well after midnight,ie slightly more interesting stuff they've not played in a while whilst the majority of the audience is asleep and keep on playing the same old crap all day.
It's a bit like that old video recorder that you may remember. The one that recorded all your favourite programmes but played them back when you were out

That's a good way to describe it!

Luckily I am a bit of a night owl.
