It's a pity I am rarely able to listen overnight as it sounds better then.
It is, it is!!! I listened for a while each night on my way home from work on my late shift from Tuesday last week. A good listen and a more varied playlist.

That would have been a better time to do it. Like Capital used to do with their yearly Hall Of Fame.
From the website :-

"This All-Time Top 500 will be played, in full, across a dedicated weekend - from Friday 29th November to Sunday 1st December. This means, between 6am and 8pm across the three days, you won’t hear the same song more than once!

Plus, between 4pm and 7pm on Sunday 1st December there will be a special rundown of your Top 40, presented by Simon Bates."

So they are playing all 500 songs over one weekend.

Even the most dedicated listener will struggle to hear all 500 songs. Seems quite a condensed squeeze.

I am a sucker for these countdowns though. I shall try to hear as much of it as possible.

David Jensen has spoken a bit outside the straitjacket.

He just mentioned having been mistaken for Sir Alex Ferguson earlier today while out and about. He also mentioned previously being mistaken for another footy manager, Steve McLaren, as well as Paul O'Grady and a couple of other people I forget now.

Now Missing You by John Waite is going yet again.

The Jensen show is really a particularly bad example of predictabilty. I'm surprised for a show that must be one of the most listened to, and with people who doubtless listen at the same time to it each night and hear the same tracks.

I agree somewhat on the overnight. I decided to give it a listen past midnight last night and it felt less predictable. I also had the website up and glanced through the previous playlist briefly, and am amazed they dare publish the thing! Plus it listed a track they did not play, and omitted the one they had played while I was listening and glancing their site.

Don't get me wrong, I actually like David Jensen as a presenter/broadcaster/DJ however you wish to describe him. Nothing I say is meant to be considered a personal attack. I mean, do you really think that David "Kid" Jensen is happy with the remit he has to work within? Highly unlikely. I'm sure he'd just love to stamp more of his own personality and words into the show given half a chance.

Is this an 'Appreciation' thread, or a thread to air general views about Smooth?

I am also still moaning had some free time this morning so tuned into Lynn Parsons. Not Lynns fault I know but it was just so boring.....:yawn:

I used to be able to listen to Smooth from 7am to 7pm and enjoy what I heard. Is this really what will bring in millions of listeners?.

Question do they have a TV in the studio for the presenter to watch when they have so little to actually do these days?

She should go out in a blaze of glory by saying something disgustingly libellous and then crank up Too Drunk to F*ck by The Dead Kennedys. After all, it was a UK Top 40 chart hit. Failing that, complete silence followed by Tits by Sparks would suffice.

I don't listen to Smooth and I haven't since it went national and that was over 4 years ago. If the presenters only speak every half hour maybe you should all send text messages onto there text number saying, is anybody there! This will possibly get the message.

I just had to laugh when just before 7pm tonight I turned on David Jensen's show and heard Get Down On It from Kool & The Gang yet again at this same time of night, having previously mentioned keep hearing it around 7pm.

Is this a manual decision, or a computer generated rotation?

If you tune in at around 15 mins past the hour and tune out just before 10 to the hour you probably wouldn't realise that there is anyone on air!!!!

I can't listen to David Jensen on Smooth, he makes me feel far from Smooth but very angry , literally causing me to shout expletives at the radio, when he very in frequently does anything like a link, well actually I wouldn't actually call whatever he says these days even a link. I would suggest the most rough around the edges , trainee presenter has far more relatable material in their" tiny fader W*****G finger"

"That was , I'm David Jensen, that was FR David and now the travel".....................................there is Martha and the Vandellas , I bet they were having a ball in the Studio when they recorded that back in the 60's , next the travel "..............................I'm David Jensen this is smooth, next X YZ and now the travel "...............................

I wouldn't mind, but clearly they have all been told to say less, at least the others can say less but still sound interesting and interested in what they are doing.

There is NO EXCUSE, appalling radio and you would get better more sense of the day , relatable connecting with the audience radio, from an internet or hospital radio station that really didn't know what it was doing, come on Smooth sort yourself out. !!!!

A couple of nights ago just before he threw to a break David Jensen named a few of the artists coming up for a play and then when mentioning the wonderful Randy Crawford said that "she's coming over here soon" which interested me greatly so I continued to listen until her track was played in the hope that he would elaborate. Alas nothing more was forthcoming disappointingly. Why say that titbit of info and then not expand on it for the audience.

If I was betting man I'd suggest he is literally saying the first thing that comes into his head, for the sake of a link and taking the money. As speculated it does sound recorded, and to do automation properly you have to be able to be creative and to sound real when in fact it has been done in advance. Agreed not good, I'm amazed though he even managed a tease forward in any capacity and to not provide the pay off is very poor indeed , particularly if it is automated, this should have been the perfect way to make it sound semi live# epic fail time to retire for good and stop alienating any remaining audience

Oh,Completey agreeFunny isn't it .on Sundays Gary King can put so much thought and effort into the few links he is allowed.and make the station sound 'big' and 'eventful'.If he can do it within the parameters.why can't Jensen?
And Jensen stamped all over the end of the Four Tops track up to the 4.55 break today. Not the best backtiming.why is it Smooth are so terrified of jocks talking over dead air?
And just as I predicted the only time he strays away from his 'here is that was he's from Tunisia ' type link is when he's promoting the Top500 songs. That would have been the 'content' for the show today/He LOVES a promo script does Jensen.Loves it.Can't get enough.
And why does he PERSIST on telling us where the artistes he plays come from? FR David, from Tunisia.there's Tavares from Los Angeles.Oh .please 'Kid'.Spare us You are sounding like an atlas. Seemingly he's reading all this info off the screen.if he's researching this useless.unrelateable information, well he really does have no idea of how to go about preparing and executing a programme. And now the travel.

.
Going back twenty years, we used to listen to Radio 538 from Holland in the shop (then Dixons). Come the Top 538, one colleague complained that the same songs came on that time each night. "It's tonight's chart, what can I do?" I replied. What is Smooth's excuse?

Interesting point about the David Jensen show sounding recorded even though it is I presume very much live. There is absolutely no doubt in my mind that when I listen it does feel like I'm listening to pre-recorded links, and I can't quite place why exactly. Also, for a show in the "drivetime" period it seems curious that I have not once ever heard a timecheck given out while I've been listening between 6pm and 8pm.

Found the point made by Up To The Vocal about him being an atlas very amusing. I'd never noticed, but you are correct thinking back about the amount of times nationalities are mentioned. It's forgivable in the scheme of things, and I had no idea FR David was Tunisian, always thought he was French.

Maybe "The Kid" has been taking the lyrics of FR David's big hit, Words, a bit too literally lately....."Words, don't come easy to me".

In October when the station moved to Leicester Square I was listening to David Jensen between 19.00 - 20.00 and seemed to be given a time check on every link. I wonder if he had been reading this thread and was trying to prove a point that he is live in the studio.
