I didn't think you believed in RAJAR?

Personally I wouldn't be surprised if there was a little dip in Q4 2013 - it's the figures covering 2014 which I think will be worth watching - especially when they do some marketing.

Learn about PRS, PPL and MCPS (Google is your friend).

Radio stations pay a predetermined rate for music royalties. A music station pays the same in royalties to these three organisations regardless of who or what they play, and how many times they play it.

I think Radio 2 - 30 years ago was a better station, at least Wogan, Ray Moore, Diddy David etc could inject their personalities into their shows

It could be there is a rise with many of the 700k ex Smooth 70s listeners tuning in, as you say they will probably do marketting later to get the over 40s Magic London listeners and no longer attempt to try and get R2 listeners.

I just heard Lynn Parsons play Ain't No Sunshine by Bill Withers at 11.29. Is this the first time this ever happened on a Tuesday morning in November? Has the playlist or rotation system failed totally? Will the face of British radio be changed forever?

Are you seriously claiming that this is a summer record because it has the word "sunshine" in the title?

Never mentioned summer. Just said I'd never heard it at 11.29 on a Tuesday morning. Surely that's noteworthy with all these complaints of tracks appearing at the same time day after day.

You asked a very good and perfectly reasonable question, despite the follow up reply you got. It's a question I asked myself just about 2 weeks ago on here. After all, it's about the filthy lucre isn't it!

Commercial radio stations pay a percentage of their annual advertising/sponsorship revenue - currently between 3% - 5.25% (depending on revenue) - to PRS, with a minimum payment of around £900/year. Speech stations, such as TalkSport and LBC, pay a reduced rate of 1%.

It's a 'blanket licence' rather than 'pay-per-play' - i.e. the number of times a particular track gets played doesn't affect the bill.

Stations are still required to provide music details to enable the rights organisations to distribute the royalties appropriately.

It's a similar situation with PPL.

Hope that helps.

Having a quick look through the Song Search on the website and the last time I can see Ain't No Sunshine was played on her show was Monday 4th November. Lean on Me has been played twice since though.

Oct 23rd to Nov 4th is a 12 day separation (almost 2 weeks). Nov 4th to today is an 8 day separation. For a song that tests very well that's not unreasonable at all.

And while I'm here let's compare data on Ain't No Sunshine from last year when Smooth was still part of GMG/R&S. Each box relates to one hour in the day and each dot indicates airplay.

But hey it's easy for DS users to bash Global when they don't have hard facts.

Very interesting.. thanks for sharing that.

Proof (if it were needed) that some of the complaints on here are completely unfounded.

If one listens to a lot of Smooth because it's their chosen station.its even more obvious that they are playing all the same songs all the time.

But the example used was played more frequently on the old Smooth than it is now.

No.I'm being deadly serious, Smooth needs more songs and quick. All these 'new listenes' they are presuming are constantly trawling the airwaves for will quickly go away from the station as soon as they arrived because they will get fed up with hearing THE SAME SONGS ALL THE TIME. Epic fail.

Female voice jingle smothered by Jimmy Ruffin. Funny isn't it how a presenter of Jensen's experience can produce so many technical errors in just a couple of weeks.
I wonder how much Jensen gets paid for what he does. It must be a millionth of what a non name presenter on a local BBC station gets paid for having to measure and consider each word they say.Whereas this guy has to do about four short sentences each hour.none of which connects to the audience and just comes across as an annoying.patronising.voice on a stick.

''George Michael and Aretha Franklin and I Knew You Were waiting For Me and now the latest travel news,,on Smooth''
Jensen has said NOTHING that would connect with the everyday person in the last hour. Absolutely NOTHING.
He has nothing to say. Zilch.

Serious question - how many songs are on their rotation list? Excluding the specialist shows of course.
