That's right, the poster last night did not say they worked at Smooth themselves, just that they knew a couple of people who did, including a presenter. Definitely was nothing libelous that I recall reading. I definitely think the person was another media person with a devastatingly succint point to make. Touches a nerve somewhere and gets airbrushed away into fresh air. Free speech eh! We're only talking about radio, not national security.

I have noticed some of the presenters on Smooth have started referring to the music as 'sets' .... The next set. They name the artists in the next 'set' That sounds like an admission they just stick on blocks of music and sit back.

They may as well stick a compilation album on and be done with it.

Yes, I know I can turn the dial and listen to something else ... but I quite like the music in their 'sets' (at this time of night anyway ) )

Exactly i hate the new smooth but something makes you want to listen lol kind of annoying as during the day you might as well put a cd on and get the same affect. Shame really.

No doubt about it, the records at this time of night (post midnight) do not seem quite so damned predictable and repetitive as during the daytime & evening. How bizarre is that!

They might as well drop the wages bill for the named presenters they have and simply bring in the accountants to spout a couple of links an hour. Money saved, profit margins widen. How sad this is considered the only viable way forward.

I think the reason why the music is a bit different after midnight that what they play in the daytimes, is down to them being able to play the stuff that doesn't test as well, so if they play more spice/unusual tracks it won't matter as much as listeners late at night are much less , but have to agree the music is much better overnight.

So could Magic but they haven't, the likes of Paul Phear and Martin Collins certainly wouldn't turn up for a small show fee.

Do Smooth 102.2 still have to play some "Jazz FM" type stuff in the small hours to satisfy the licencing conditions? I know this used to be the case but it was some time back that I last heard it overnight?

No, it was abolished in 2010 in return for the requirement to broadcast the 12 hours of specialist content "during evenings and weekend daytimes". rather than allowing it between midnight and 6am.

(the link to the London statement doesn't seem to work but it's the same as the North West)

Of course the poster in question could have asked for their post to be removed.

I sadly heard 40 mins of Tina Hobley's show this morning and in that time she spoke twice! Question has to be asked what was the point in even having a presenter? Might as well just play non stop music

I haven't heard this new Smooth radio and by the forums on here I am not missing anything. I see on the website that they have loads of presenters some well known. Why hire and pay them if they are not talking much I really liked listening to Smooth when it first came out around 2007 with there playlist and then they ruined it after a year or so. I liked Jeff Cooper and John Peters. Radio stations that are recorded a lot like Compass FM and Ridings FM do a better job by the sounds of it.

I was just thinking today how much better she is sounding, in fact Sunday is a good Smooth day now.

Plus in the full consultation document
Quote:
“In addition it is a fact that 24-hour jazz related music can now be easily found on DAB in the North West region, nationally on DTV, online and on other listening platforms via Jazz FM which according to RAJAR now attracts nearly half a million listeners across the UK each week”

Global have gone for a positive view on DAB, compared to the last days of GCAP when theJazz was closed, Jazz FM did suggest it might leave DAB, and we dont know if anyone repsonded to the ad to provide a simular service, But looks like now Jazz FM may stay?

Nice to see a very dapper and smart David Jensen in the pink tinted studio on Friday there. Such a shame that picture doesn't translate over the actual radio lately. It is not being flippant to seriously ask exactly how somebody like "The Kid" spends his 4 hours on air each evening when there is such minimal personal input. I'm genuinely curious. The same question applies to other names on Smooth too.

The interesting thing about the universally positive Twitter reaction is

A. Presumably your average Twitter user is a fair bit younger than Smooths likely age target, yet they still love the new output and ...

B. it's a reasonable reflection of the increasingly 'Normal' feedback on Facebook..Ie people asking for mentions or responding to the features.

I suspect the listener churn is well underway and Smooth are now consistently hitting the mark for its new converts, and those who weren't keen on the old pop'n'prattle approach.

Working on the house all day yesterday and put Magic on in the background didn't notice any repetition and they played a decent selection of music. Ok not that much speech but overall much better than new Smooth.

Here's my favourite tweet from yesterday :-

"Josh Tebow ‏@joshtetlow 17 Nov
Will definitely be tuning in to @TinaHobley every Sunday from now on, hasn't played one bad song! @SmoothRadio"

That's fortunate as he'll get to hear them all over again next Sunday and the one after that...........

First switch on of the Smooth Drive Home at 6.17pm tonight since last Friday and met by Candle In The Wind from Elton. What annoys me so much is that Elton John currently has a great new single out called Voyeur which is also perfect for Smooth. I've bought it. But no, carry on peddling the same old hit from 1974 why not, over and over and over and over again. This station now has the power to make me start hating songs I've long loved simply due to the overplaying of them. No matter how much you love a song, there are only so many times you want to keep hearing it per week/month. This "tested" argument for songs on the playlist is simply another way of saying "lowest common denominator", and we all know that when you go in that direction nobody ends up pleased.

Except the already mentioned happy campers on FB, Twitter and if they have got it right, a rising silent majority.
