I listened to Simon Bates this morning from 06.00/8.00 and the predictability of the music is now pretty obvious. But poor Mr Bates he is trying to interact as much as possible but its just not him. Come on radio 2 offer him a show. love him or hate him he is a consummate professional and belongs on radio 2. Sunday Love Songs (with our tune) Saturday early show at 06.00 he was made for radio 2.

Must admit there's always a sarcastic cheer or snigger when the Carpenters or ONJ get played, from our office.

Its always the Grease one for ONJ innit!

I heard something today that makes me wonder if Paul Phear will eventually be taking on the BREAKFAST Show on Smooth London.

An earlier poster has mentioned that Smooth will be going back to regional Breakfast & Drive shows later in the year.

I really hope they do go back to local breakfast and drive on Smooth, as Smartprogrammer said that we are all goin to be pleasantly surprised with Smooth later in the year.

Its most likely that they will as if they sell some of the Smooths as franchises some local programming has to be produced from the owner. Unlike the USA here you can't just buy a station and franchise the output 24/7.

Smooth and Magic will go head to head in London as they are relatively the same with different sounding and music.

Bauer seem to be repositioning Magic in London in it's current TV ad to get more 30ish listeners from Heart (who the ad agency people are after) and will help to keep it number one commercial station in London, Smooth has a chance to get the older 40+ listeners from Magic (and help Heart knock it off the number one one perch) if they get a decent TV and billboard campaign going?

If more regional FM/DAB opt outs take place due to franchising sell offs, then digital listeners in these areas will have a choice of regional opt out or national.

Global will still be able to add up numbers for national ad rates from agencies, will be interesting to see if the current total of 3.3 million goes up or down when the latest rajar figures come out next month?

It could be D1 might finally split to have different opt out programmes in Scotland as there are seperate frequencies? But so far Smooth is the only station on D1 that will benefit from this so may not happen?

March sees the 40th anniversary of him starting on the early show on Radio 2. They could mark the anniversary by offering him the same show. Not sure he'd take the same money though! But Sunday morning 9.00 till 12.00 with the Golden Hour and Our Tune would be fine.

Bob Shennan has made cutbacks to specialist music shows under DQF so hiring a new live presenter to do Sunday mornings would raise eyebrows at the Trust. The savings from the loss of live big band sessions should not be used to pay for an extra DJ playing mainstream pop music.

Steve Wright's (recorded) love songs show is fine as it is.

Some people are easily pleased and accept boring bland radio.

They seem to just accept the changes on Smooth yet if Eastenders or Coronation Street turned into bland useless low budget soaps they would soon desert out in there droves!!!!

Strange isn't it?

The difference here is that people actively sit down and watch the soaps. With commercial radio you can churn out any dross and people will not notice. People have the radio on while they are doing something else. They are not really paying attention to what is being broadcast, it is simply background noise, audio wallpaper. I wonder what will happen when the advertisers eventually wake up to this.

It be nice for Smooth to introduce some new music to the playlist. Go for Radio 2 with a set of 3 playlists every week plus the normal music.

Followed by talking after every couple of tracks and an expanded playlist. Oh I forgot you can't make money doing that silly me.

sorry its not "fine as it is" at all. as a public broadcaster they owe it to the paying public to give of their best and the Sunday Love Songs is a zillion miles away from its best

Quite agree SLS is the same tired old rubbish the BBC have been throwing at its R2 audience for years. Yes it should be live on Sunday mornings.

I always remember when Steve said " He was amazed by the response when it first aired". The BBC have been throwing it as listeners for years and the ratings are very high. So if it an't broke'

Exactly, it's very popular with listeners and I very much doubt that until recently most didn't know that it wasn't live and why does it matter?

While I'm sure it's fun to discuss Radio 2, I thought I'd bring this discussion back to the main topic.

I've been listening now for the past few weeks and as a listener I'm impressed with Smooth Radio.

It's a lovely station to listen to. I really enjoy the soul show on Sunday nights in particular.

Last night I was tuned in and enjoyed the movie songs and the disco show that follows.

During the week I catch it for a couple of hours or so and think the music and talking is just about right.

I still don't quite understand why people are so negative about it. Surely if it annoys you, you simply switch to something else?

Thing is, you just dip in occasionally, so you don't notice the repetition...

Have a look on their Facebook page, and you will see plenty of posts from people who listen to it when at work, and are fed up of the same old, same old!

That Facebook page also includes this statement (23 January):

Quote:
“As we've said recently before on this page, since making some changes to the on-air sound, we have completely stripped back the music we play. Now, as you have commented, you may hear the same songs on quite frequent rotation - this isn't the 'future' of Smooth. Now we're at this stage, we can start building up the playlist and introducing a range of other songs accordingly. We've had this confirmed by the on-air team responsible for the music.

That's what most listeners do!

I cant see much changing to be honest. You only have to hear globals other stations to know they love tight playlists even on an oldies station. So dont see much happening soon. And if i hear ABBA and one of us any more times i will go into meltdown lol. Presenters are good, music and adds just dire.

Totally agree I don't see much changing either. Its ridiculous to strip the playlist out and then claim you are going to build it back up. Why not simply edit it in the first place. They have now alienated many loyal listeners who are not immediately going to tune back. I think maybe they are trying to cover the fact that they have gone too far. It maybe too little too late.
