Please don't slate Carlos because he will only get upset on his facebook page as he did with me stating on here that I would've prefered Nick Piercey or even Tammy Gooding tooo have been given a role on the networked smooth radio.

The presenter line up looks very bland and listening in they sound it. Smashy and Nicey were more exciting than the two Daves.
I sometimes wonder why commercial radio can not be more exciting. If I want to listen to music like Smooth I can plug my I-Pod in to the car system. |

Hang on a minute - not so long ago you were saying that the changes at Smooth were destroying something which people knew and loved. Now you're saying Lynn Parsons - on a national station - is preferential to Eamonn Kelly.
If you're in the East Midlands, that would surely include Eamonm Kelly, who is far from "just another ILR jock". The point about many of the Smooth presenters - like those on Magic - is that they make the format sound easy to do, when in fact it isn't. Talking a little less than your competitors, maintaining the flow of music, and coming up with the right link at the right time is actually quite tricky. There's a skill, and in my opinion Eamonn has that. What's more, he didn't just land on Smooth from nowhere. As others have pointed out he worked on Capital Gold and was one of the pioneers of legal commercial radio in Ireland. All you've proved is that radio presenters are a very subjective thing for the listeners. You like Lynne, I like Eamonn. It doesn't mean the new Smooth is going to be a diasaster, as you've hinted at before. On the basis of what I've heard today, they seem to be virtually aping Gold. No new music to speak of, and exactly the same records you'd hear on a variety of other stations. The jingles sound so poor. Reminds me of Luxembourg in the 50's! At least they were good for their era. The DAB sound quality is atrocious. Lynn deserves better than these amateurs. Carlos was very pro, but ultimately a Smashie and Nicey personality from a bygone age. Won't listen again until Bates starts. I bet he's wondering what he's let himself in for on the evidence of today's terminally average programming. |

Doesn;t the news jingle sound like LBC one? I guess with my comments and others it be a good idea to let the station blend in and listeners around the UK get used to it. One thing. Radio 2 won't have any worries.

I think Mark got it right with the set strap line. On line, digital and in London, Midlands, etc. Instead of Online, digital and on 102.2 in London.

I took your advice and hung on a minute. I stand by what said. Lynn is the best person to fulfil the breakfast role, given the new set of circumstances. In an ideal world, the regional stations would still exist and then Eamonn on his own station would be fine. He doesn't have the clout or personality to hack it nationally.

Hearing Lynn reading the news headlines this morning was painful. You can hear Bates getting away with that from January. On the whole I listened and thought that the format was designed for him and Lynn tried to give it her best, but as per usual it sounded like daytime cover for Mark Goodier instead of being a national breakfast presenter. |

[quote=Martin Phillp;44570553]Although he already has....on Capital Gold!
And that is what I base my opinion on. He sounded somewhat out of his depth. I concede he has his fans though. You missed the heavy rotation of Michael Buble and Paloma Faith then? Like most listeners, I hear bits and pieces, Thank God I missed that! Yes preferably on a non Breakfast show on Radio 2. Lynn was brilliant on Dawn Patrol recently. Radio 2, a professional radio station, is where she belongs Hearing Lynn reading the news headlines this morning was painful. You can hear Bates getting away with that from January. On the whole I listened and thought that the format was designed for him and Lynn tried to give it her best, but as per usual it sounded like daytime cover for Mark Goodier instead of being a national breakfast presenter. DJs shouldn't read the news. Another cheapskate cost cutting measure. Mark Goodier made me laugh with his arrogant assumption that we'll all be listening to Smooth in 5 years. It won't even exist in 5 years. I give it 3. |

Hmm, if Global do eventually purchase GMG, it'd almost certainly merge with Gold.

One thing i've noticed about the smooth radio jingles they sound like the jingles used by UKRD/TLRC. I wonder if its produced by the same company. But it sounds very good though including there website.

It is crazy not to provide a dedicated travel and news service for London on 102.2.....if GMG want to save money why not just switch 102.2 off and hand back the licence? That way they could get rid of the London studios at the same time....

Lynn Parsons has a nice voice, but a maddening habit of talking over songs. Yesterday she ruined I'd Really Love to See You Tonight (great song by England Dan and John Ford Coley) and this morning at around the same time, she cut off Living Thing (ELO) with some bland comment about the Ryder Cup. I can't stand Simon Bates but thought I would give Lynn a chance: not impressed so far!
Also, how is the news inserted? Nick Qureshi started the 7 a.m. news with "It's six o'clock...". A slip of the tongue, or the wrong bulletin inserted electronically? |

Doesn't seem to have stopped Chris Evans from getting an audience, in spite of all the complaints. There are very few DJs left who know how to play a record and who also respect the music. Most of them have their mic levels louder than the music. Ego, ego, ego. Me, me, me! |

Well if global buy it out you can kiss me goodbye globals playlist is just dire compared to smooth and smooth would loose its loyal listeners.Granted there is repeat songs on smooth but it has a bigger playlist than all the global stations put together.

I recall DJ's on Power FM reading the news in the early 1990s - 90 seconds up to the top of the hour - it sounded brilliant. As I said earlier, a new network is never going to sound its best on day one. I'm pretty sure others - like Simon Bates - will be more comfortable reading the news headlines (which are still written by a journalist, so that's also thrown your cost cutting theory out of the window) - and some, like Lynn, will get better with it over time. You make me laugh with your arrogant assumption that Smooth won't exist in five years. What will be in its place then? |

As I said earlier, and perhaps even earlier than that, a soul, jazz or country station would offer more 'variety', if you'll pardon my language. I would quite happily accept a station that doesn't particularly appeal to me, if it offered more choice. I just don't need yet another station playing 'God Only Knows', coz God only knows, I'm bored witless. |

I am always amazed at how much praise is given to presenters like Lynn Parsons, presumably based on the fact she works on Radio 2. Bland and boring are words I would certainly associate with her - along with Simon Bates, a man who would fit perfectly on Radio 2 as he too likes the sound of his own voice. The problem I have with Smooth at the moment is the creeping in of some un-Smooth type songs. Yesterday they played Could it be Magic by Take That - a good enough song - but not what I'd expect to hear on Smooth. Having heard Carl Emms - Carlos - back in the 80s, I can't quite get used to his toned down approach on Smooth. He sounds like he's about to launch into hot-jock mode at any minute. |

Most that I've heard on Smooth so far, I've also heard on Gold/Magic/Heart/Radio 2 in the past. I am always amazed at how much praise is given to presenters like Lynn Parsons, presumably based on the fact she works on Radio 2. All DJs like the sound of their own voice. I think Lynn is one of the few who comes across as a very pleasant human being. She doesn't sound like your typical DJ, which is her great strength Having heard Carl Emms - Carlos - back in the 80s, I can't quite get used to his toned down approach on Smooth. Tony Blackburn and Neil Fox are both 'Old School' and still making an impact. Presenters who can actually relate and connect with the audience, rather than just reading liner cards. I would put Carlos in the same category.
