As I said earlier, and perhaps even earlier than that, a soul, jazz or country station would offer more 'variety', if you'll pardon my language. I would quite happily accept a station that doesn't particularly appeal to me, if it offered more choice. I just don't need yet another station playing 'God Only Knows', coz God only knows, I'm bored witless.”
The problem with saying that it doesn't offer something different is that in many parts of the country it does. Believe it or not many parts of the country have very little choice in stations at all.
Also your earlier comment about Smooth aping Gold is ridiculous - I can only assume you don't listen to Gold very often.
I am always amazed at how much praise is given to presenters like Lynn Parsons, presumably based on the fact she works on Radio 2. Bland and boring are words I would certainly associate with her - along with Simon Bates, a man who would fit perfectly on Radio 2 as he too likes the sound of his own voice.
The problem I have with Smooth at the moment is the creeping in of some un-Smooth type songs. Yesterday they played Could it be Magic by Take That - a good enough song - but not what I'd expect to hear on Smooth.
Having heard Carl Emms - Carlos - back in the 80s, I can't quite get used to his toned down approach on Smooth. He sounds like he's about to launch into hot-jock mode at any minute.
