Why do the people at global think nobody likes talk? Let's not forget Evans talks a lot on radio 2 and has the biggest audience! Fair enough if global only want people who are in a coma to listen but the average listener surely wants some kind of entertainment other than 7 songs in a row followed by a short link?

Global are being realistic about the market. There's no point trying to be Radio 2 when you don't have the budget. Global have clearly identified a gap in the market for a more-music service targeted at over 45s who feel there's too much speech on Radio 2. I always thought the music on Smooth needed to live up to the station name - and now it is. Some very nice sweeps.

I would have thought so I know I do but thats not the way that Global think. Gold has a more music policy and they have introduced a similar policy for Smooth. 7 songs in a row and a small link is just cheap rubbish radio. I really don't see the point of a presenter if they are going to do so little of what they get paid for.

I would agree with the poster above that Radio 2 has too much speech these days but sadly Smooth and Gold for that matter have too little. A compromise of say 2 or 3 songs in a row followed by a reasonable link would be much more palatible to me.

Radio 2 has no ads so they can afford to have more talk in the hour. Anyway if you want to hear about Evans social life listen to Radio 2. I dont so am quite glad of short links and more music in the mornings.

Talent ???

'That was, this is' hardly constitutes talent...

He also has a national audience so you can't compare.

Btw I see nobody is praising the decision to return to local programming. But wait, this is Digital Spy so not surprised really.

Does not affect us in the London area except although Andrew Castle is a nice chap who knows his tennis does not have the musical or radio known voice of Simon Bates, or even rival Neil Fox, who may pick up more mature listeners at London breakfast?

Been a loyal "Smooth" fan, like the music, but Simon Bates was special! think that could be it for me with radio and stick with the CD's, just been driving, Lynn Parson's on, I turned the radio off and had silence, that was better!

So, apart from the Glasgow local presenters, is Dave Brown the 'last man standing' from the old Smooth?

In areas where Smooth is not going onto mw or fm, Will they be on dab local/regional in

that area instead ? So they can still broadcast across the Uk or will these areas just not

have Smooth ?

I think the answer to that largely depends on whether they are taking advantage of the "80% rule" to avoid local programming in the West Midlands.

If they opt to do local shows in the WM I can't see much point in paying for DAB carriage where there are no analogue licence rollovers.

True, but somehow I can't see them employing a commentator to sit back and play music.

Certainly not! heaven forbid. This is England after all.
Since it went through the Commons, House of Lords and then received Royal Assent, that bill to outlaw such behaviour has been strictly obeyed.

We have only ever had Smooth on national DAB here so local programming to me is not an issue.
In any case if I wanted local there are other stations that provide it.
I just preferred Smooth before Global took a hatchet to it.

I notice from next week's programmes guide on freeview that the only change is Kate Garraway replacing Lynn Parsons. Simon Bates and Carlos are still listed for their programmes but I guess that could change...

Mylene did host a show on Smooth over Christmas and she wasn't too bad, better than Tina Hobley but then that's not saying much.

The only shining light is that Paul Phear will be part of the Smooth line up. I guess he jumped ship from Magic to get national exposure.

I wonder when the local show presenters will be announced.”

Good point about the tennis starting at noon. Maybe he will do both during Wimbledon.

It's not an issue for me as it doesn't affect me where I am. So your surprise about the posters on DS is a little skewed.

That's a reply that screams "I don't have a clue".

If the good people at Global are so clueless what would YOU have done to turn around Smooth's failing fortunes?

What fascinates me about these changes is that Smooth is going for people who have done things on TV, a similar comment/complaint about Radio 2 and its presenters.

I am also interested in the Great American Songbook programme for Sunday Nights which could compete with Michael Ball, Clare Teal and Don Black.

It'll be Michael Ball, Clare Teal and Moira Stuart from 9th March: http://www.bbc.co.uk/mediacentre/pro...rt-sunday.html

Smooooooooth .....sounds like there is a rough ride ahead>

Come on Bob get Simon back to the Beeb where he now rightfully belongs on Radio 2.

he would be great on the early show, main cover jock for SW and KB, and CE early Saturday show.

he would just be an asset.

An old white male with a lifetime in radio. Not a chance.

A real shame that Simon's being made to leave. I had hoped that once the regional breakfast shows had started, he would have at least kept London's one or if not, a move to the mid morning slot kicking off with The Golden Hour at 9 - and no, my tongue ain't in my cheek! Ah well, that's me off then

Do you think Tony Hall is going to allow a male DJ to replace Vanessa Feltz bearing in mind that there is already a shortage of female DJs on weekday daytimes? No chance at all.

If there is a vacancy Sara Cox or Zoe Ball will get it.

Yes this (and the great British songbook on Saturdays) seem to be the most interesting shows in the new line up.
