This is not good. The best show they had (Pete Waterman) and they replace it with this rubbish. I noticed 'A Different Corner' was squeezed in followed by Robbie bloody Williams. These two artists make me want to put my head in the oven. I shall not be tuning into this show again.

Waiting.........

Was that the GMG days or Global.
18 months ago Smooth was sounding great
. soul classics making up the bilk of the tunes, with most hours a new release and a great oldie. Then dj;s with a love of Northern Soul playing stuff which some stations ignore as they just play Motown to death.

Now, it just sounds skewed to a female audience, a Heart playlist that went threw a blender to create a Heart Smooth(ie).
I was only talking about Smooth Radio since about last September time. I agree it was okay much further back. I wish I could spit through the radio at them now, such is my disgust.

I decided to put the radio on at around quarter to ten tonight, my first listen to Smooth in 6 weeks just to see how it's sounding. A DIFFERENT CORNER!! Off I went to Radio 2's Sounds Of The 80's and when it ended a few minutes ago I tuned back to Smooth only for CANDLE IN THE WIND to be going at me.

It's almost jaw dropping that those 2 songs came at me again. They seemed to be hounding me every time I listened before Christmas. It defies belief they continue to do so with immediate effect the moment I tune into Smooth all over again.

Saturday Night Fever was the best show by a mile on Smooth Radio JC. Naturally they had to get rid of it!

I actually thought of you RT when I heard 'A Different Corner' come on earlier. I had such high hopes for this Songbook show, but have been very underwhelmed. It is one show that I shall not be returning to.

I think the great British songbook is about British artists. Maybe you should go and listen to the bbc.
Well, SONGbook , in the title, suggests songs...

More Tinpot output

I tuned in after 10.30 and heard songs I have heard played on Smooth since the Global takeover. I heard Noel Harrison with the The Windmills in Your Mind and Colin Blunstone with Say You Don't Mind. I also heard a song played by Gary King which I had not heard in years yesterday afternoon it was Elton John with Can You Feel The Love Tonight from Disney's Lion King Movie. On the mid morning show with Lynn Parsons I heard Madonna with Frozen, I heard that song in a while on the radio, I don't think I heard it on Smooth before. Don't forget when GMG owned the station a Barry White song was played everyday if made me laugh I heard a presenter say coming up next Barry White. When GMG owned the station towards the end they scheduled ad breaks nearly 10 minutes which was a turn off. I was pleased when Global introduced 20 - 25 minutes of music from the news before the ads were played. Yes, it is irritating hearing the same songs played again but this may change after the station is officially relaunched later this month, I think Global are doing a good job in picking the music.

Rajar will say its going up even though people are leaving in their droves.
"Leaving in their droves". Not sure where you get that from! What about the new listeners tuning into a station that finally has it's focus back?
With all the adverts on smooth at the moment its no wonder it will makr a bloody profit. It would be hard not too with all these adverts every 3 songs.
'Every 3 songs". Not sure where you get that from either...because it's not.

If this show is merely four hours of mainstream tracks with a fancy title it doesn't qualify as specialist by Ofcom's definition, and they are not meeting the minimum requirement of 12 hours of specialist programming per week.

To qualify as specialist I would expect the show to include features about songwriting and tracks that you don't normally hear in daytime.

I didn't hear this show but from the descriptions on here it sounds like the station is in breach of format, and it's worth making a complaint to Ofcom.

Phildunk had the right idea..listen, THEN criticise.

......And if like George Michael (oh no,not him again!) says , you 'listen without prejudice' you might even like it

The issue isn't whether it's a bad show, but whether it qualifies as specialist output.

If it's the same tracks as the rest of the schedule it doesn't qualify, whatever Smooth/Global want to call it.

But phildunk listed a couple of tracks that were played when he dipped in that you never hear on Smooth these days.. You will have to listen and mount a proper case if you are going to complain to Ofcom.

At the moment 'playing songs that might sometimes be played at other parts of the day by British artists in a show called The Great British Songbook' doesn't seem to be much of a complaint.

All chris skinner said was how's your saturday night going every link and it was adverts after every 3 songs. Truly awfull radio and no way was it specialist music.

Many on here obviously dislike Smooth like me these days. Why do you still bother to listen when you know it's so predictably bad. I turned it off months ago. Tune to Gold instead while you still can.

Said it before, but you REALLY should be a politician with your feeble "Spin"!!

For "repetitive" they substitute "focus"!!!

Sad isn't it?

No you wouldn't. None of the usual suspects would dare praise a brand owned by Global regardless of how good it is.

Good. So maybe we'll be seeing less of your comments now.

Gold isn't that bad I listen a lot in fact its on here now (while I still can before I lose it) but if you seriously expect praise for Global amongst the radio purists on here forget it.

It's not "Spin" wckartist, it's fact. In time you'll be able to see the new Smooth's increased Rajar and profitability for yourself.

Now I've asked you before and you didn't reply so I'll ask you again. If Global are getting it so wrong (in your opinion) what would YOU do to turn around the fortunes of a station that was losing over £2 million a year?

Well I have stated what I believe, but, anyway, here we go again.....

Your "one size fits all" approach WILL backfire with Smooth.... its Ok to be bland and repetitive on Heart, as you are aiming at people of a certain ilk, and, as the "yes men" have frequently stated, they don't care that its not local, are not bothered if they hear the same song over and over, and when a glaring mistake is made on air, you say "no one noticed".....yet your bible instructs you all to refer to these people as "normal"!!!

With Smooth, its a totally different animal, it had lots of male listeners in their 40's and 50's who have grown up on hearing a lot of varied and quality music from their youth through to today.....your Facebook page was in meltdown the other day with posters hacked off at the same songs cropping up every couple of hours.

Now to what I think is the REAL problem, which I've stated in many threads, but no one has ever replied to....

Global may have some real good bean counters, but there is no one who has a comprehensive knowledge of music from down the decades, and I suspect your music testing bo%%ox is very limited because of this......you ignore so many great songs, dismissing them without knowing anything about them......remember the thread a while ago when a Global apologist ridiculed "storm in a teacup" by The Fortunes.....then had egg on their face when someone posted the lyrics, and "said" Global person had to backtrack, as he or she DID recognise the song??

You have so many millions of songs from down the years to pick from, yet choose so few........I personally would employ a consultant who was a PD at a big city station in the early days, has a 30 to 40 year career in music radio, and a superb track record........much better than asking Sharon and Tracy to rate a Take That song in a music testing survey...

Oh, and don't get me started on your leading questions like "would you like less waffle
from the DJ"....They're bound to say YES........so then your presenters are down to three links an hour.......Well chosen thoughtful words are the way forward, not "this is Smooth" every 25 minutes!

Right, done!!

Know that for a fact do you? Do you know EVERYBODY involved with programming at Global?

So explain how your precious Smooth NW reach and hours jumped in the last RAJAR (Q4/2013). London also saw a big 28.4% increase in hours along with the North East posting a 5.3% increase too.
