It's kind of true though, if Roger Day is that relevant now and is that good why is he on a tinpot community station and not Radio 2, Smooth, Gold or alike ? Blackburn can be cheesy at times but at least he's been smart and moved with the times a bit more.

I had a listen today and it was full of bits from the papers with a 'well I never...' type reaction at the end but no real point or relation to the audience. It's been a long time since I heard a breakfast show like that. I see he's talking about a campaign to get himself back on the BBC, perhaps Twiggy is a just a bit despondent, I wish him well

Very good choices. Gary King and the team at smooth have picked some good artists for the 3 from 1 over the last few months and help from the listeners too.

Roger Day's station BBC Kent was the only station that gained listeners when the new networked evening show came on and replaced him. So, whatever people on here are saying about Roger Day, he was clearly not very popular with listeners in general.

It was from the 1st March in stages, yesterday Kate from breakfast TV replaced Lynn (ex Capital, R1, R2 etc), in 3 weeks Simon will go and new regional optouts will arrive, some Gold listeners will be forced to Smooth, then presumably a TV and billboard ad campaign for more new listeners from other stations such as Magic?
Lynn in some ways is similar to Roger an old style radio professional who takes care in selecting music and items of interest to listeners, Lynn was then reigned in on Smooth where the music and links are now chosen by research so listeners do not hear anything which may cause them to switch off, bland safe pregramming, but seems to work in Rajars?
At the end of March they are aiming for 4.3 million listeners to be a major station, then increase it even more when the campaigns start.

Not much, just the odd tweeted pic of the pretty lights in the studio, guess they have to pass the time somehow.

How many artists and how often is each one chosen?

The only time 3 from 1 at 3 let me down was when it was Neil Diamond and they didn't play "Cracklin Rosie" or "Forever in Blue Jeans"

Aaah, but Roger was on (wait for it)... THE PIRATES!

He was spinning those discs out in the North Sea on good old medium wave, cutting up PAMS jingles while waiting for the tender to arrive from Holland. His broadcasting style still harks back to those times and in the anorak world this somehow elevates him to god-like status.

Grrrrreat days!

Richard Park, on the other hand has adapted since his time on the pirate ships and has had a very distinguished and successful management career. While he's busy turning Smooth from a failing station into a successful one he's probably not too worried that he's missing out on a gig at Redstone FM!

I imagine Smooth will leave D1 on the 24th of March when it takes over local AM/DAB slots across the country.

I'm surprised however if it's that soon why he haven't had any announcements regarding the station that will replace it.

Yes and without the offshore stations I wonder where Global would be today?

The offshore stations accelerated the launch of a national pop station in the form of BBC Radio 1, but probably didn't make any difference to the development of ILR.

The Heath Government were determined to introduce competition for BBC Radio across the UK, and the Thatcher Government even more so. The 1972 blueprint for ILR was nothing like the 1960s pirate stations.

Exactly where it is now probably, if not with an even bigger monopoly.

Anyone who thinks ILR wouldn't have started were it not for the pirates is deluded.

It may have started later than 1973, but do you seriously think the Thatcher government would have allowed the BBC to remain unchallenged? If ILR had started post-1979 I suspect more stations would have been sanctioned much earlier, with far less regulation of content. It's ridiculous that, in a free market economy in 2014, we still have a regulator effectively telling stations what songs they can play. Not for much longer thankfully.

Yes, without the 60s pirate stations, we'd still only have the Home Service, the Light Programme and the Third Programme.

Exactly some of us were there in the 60's without the offshore stations there would be NO Uk commercial radio and no Global.
You would have just loved the Light Programme.

I'm not I went to school in the 60's. The government closed the offshore stations (well almost) gave us Radio's 1 to 4 and commercial radio followed in the 70's none of which would have happened without the likes of Radios Caroline,London and England etc.

Any thoughts on who will be taking the regional drive slots?

Would be great to see Carlos back in the West Midlands on Breakfast.

Utter rubbish.

Commercial radio would have happened with or without the pirates. Maybe not in 1973, but definitely under Thatcher. She would never have let the BBC bumble along like it was pre-1967.
