1. The adverts may, in your opinion be the most "exciting" thing on Smooth but that's hardly surprising when it's branded as "your relaxing music mix". The station's called Smooth by the way, not Snooze.

2. The music, jingles and presenters may be "boring" in your opinion but again, Smooth isn't meant to be exciting.

3. It's your opinion that the woman on the jingles is "patronising". I disagree. I'm sure if lots of listeners felt the same way Smooth would change the voice.

4. If you want to throw up I'm not stopping you.”

There you go again my opinions must be wrong as you think otherwise.
1. The adverts left over from Gold stick out like a sore thumb they do not fit the format.
2. I appreciate Smooth isn't meant to be exciting but surely the presenters do not have to sound bored
3. I am entitled to view my opinion of the new jingles the old sung ones fitted in well and added to the overall sound. The new jingles are lifeless they don't sell the brand.

No I don't listen but I would like to want to listen given that I have now got this on DAB in place of Gold.

A vocal minority has reacted loudly to change as they always do, the question remains however, if it was Mall money being spent, would you continue with a ratings and financial liability?

And would you engage in fairly pointless dialogue, or make the changes quickly and let the station find it's new audience (which may include large numbers of the non-vocal old audience)

The Facebook pages aren't a "total PR disaster". The same thing happened with Galaxy becoming Capital and it didn't affect listening figures. Not everyone likes change. Anyone is free to express their views but they won't be able to reverse a commercial decision.

So who is the "CUSTOMER"? Is it the listeners or the advertisers? Anyone who has ever worked in a customer facing environment will tell you "THE CUSTOMER IS ALWAYS RIGHT" is the biggest load of nonsense ever written.

Go and look up "debate" in the dictionary.

Remember last year when TFM and Metro merged? TFM's Facebook page was full of complaints, nasty comments and people vowing to never listen again. There was even a protest outside the studios (I think about 20 people turned up). Despite that, the listening figures went up. It also happened when Atlantic FM Cornwall was replaced by Heart; outrage on DS, Facebook etc but listening figures went up. Expect the same again in a couple of weeks when Real becomes Heart. I know some people find it hard to believe, but Facebook doesn't represent the views of the typical listener.

Funny how Facebook isn't criticized as not representing the views of the typical listener when so many websites carry a "click here to please like us on facebook".

Where can we find the views of the typical listener then please, and why is it assumed that those not expressing an opinion on the changes MUST be in favour of them?

Why would FB users not be normal listeners? The pro global brigade on DS will never accept that this time they may just have made a misjudgment. Time will tell of course.

The RAJAR figures are the best indication of what the typical listener thinks, as it's assumed that if they don't like a station they'll listen to something else. In the cases mentioned such as TFM/Metro and Atlantic/Heart, figures went up despite the howls of protest on Facebook.

As a pro Smooth brigadier, I point out the temporary outrage when Pat and David went... It's exceedingly rare to see either of their names now. The Bates and Gold storm has been fiercer, but is already diminishing.

Yes i was with Amara. I hated the changes to smooth but i was never a massive gold fan either. I do put smooth on in the car on AM every now and then and i do prefer it to gold but thats just me. However the playlist needs widening but having said that whenever i dipped into gold it was the same songs over and over but thats just a global way of doing things.

The main difference with the smooth / gold changes compared other ones is simple. Galaxy's format was similar to Capital's. Real's format is similar to Heart's. Century's was similar to Heart, but Smooth's format is a world away from Gold. Gold was more upbeat and punchy. Smooth is so laid back it's almost asleep. That may be an important difference. I have no doubt the complaints will continue on facebook, albeit get less and less as time goes on, and Global will stick to their guns, but I don't think the listening figures in the AM areas will hold up as well as Galaxy's and Century's did, and as well as Real's will do.

Are you tarring all the Smooth presenters with the "bored" brush ? I think this is unfair .

Er, none of those links have audience figures for Pirate Radio Essex...

Great to hear Jo Lloyd on Smooth NW this afternoon from 2pm - was concerned she might have lost out with the demise of Real. A true professional with experience previously at Century, Real and Heart.
Loving the new sound of Smooth - a bit more upbeat and less soulful than before. Track after track of classic music. No inane chatter.

Never said there was, but if you read it you will see why there are no direct figures. I never said there were.

But you said:

Quote:
“Pirate Radio Essex proved the audience was there.”

How has it proved the audience was there if no-one knows what the audience was? The audience might have been 2,000 enthusiasts.

Back by popular demand, the award-winning Pirate BBC Essex returns to the airwaves this Easter (10-13 April) for a four-day broadcast.

Im not getting into childish games with you as it seems thats your intention. If you read the quotes i am basing it on the comments there, however as it states RAJAR figures are not done on a daily basis. If you are really bothered about exact figures then feel free to research the figures yourself based around the dates of broadcast. For the BBC to bring it back would mean there was an audience first time round.

You can't have listened to Smooth much this week then Lionel Richie 'My Destiny' is on every single day.

I don't think you understand - t's impossible to do this. There are no figures. The BBC have no figures. Rajar has no figures.

The phrase "back by popular demand" doesn't mean that any official figures were complied.

Listening this afternoon I heard Labi Siffre's "it must be love" folllowed by Simon and Garfunklel's "homeward bound".

It's been a long time since I've heard either of those two songs played on any radio station.

I shall miss Smooth when it leaves Digital One. It would be great if the London version reappeared on the NI local mux (there's loads of space available now) in stereo but I don't hold out much hope.

That's right. Normal listeners will make their own minds up about the changes to Smooth. Some will like it, some won't. I don't think Global will be too worried about losing a few anorak listeners if they gain a lot more target listeners who will increase their listening hours and profits (which they will).
