Is the new sound of Smooth being marketed?
I haven't seen or heard a sniff of any sort of promotion. |

May be a silly question that has kind of been answered already but will Carlos be doing his show from Manchester or can he stay in Birmingham?

Yes. Nick Piercey said this morning "the postman stops calling after Friday".

With Smooth Radio going National next week what I don't understand is why Smooth are not taking advantage of the fact that Digital 1 broadcasts on a different frequency in Scotland to England thereby putting Smooth Glasgow onto the National MUX in Scotland

If it isn't available in Scotland on either FM or DAB at breakfast & drive this claim would be pretty hollow. They don't want to broadcast a separate service on FM in Glasgow but they are stuck with it for now. |

Perhaps they will still use different adverts in Scotland....for example Scottish Gas adverts instead of British Gas or for other advert campaigns used for National brands but delivered differently within England and Scotland.

I notice they replaced the agency that did the album covers!
Found this http://www.gmgradio.com/news/story/s...g-campaign/131 Whats a sheet? Notice no TV ads this time! Would have thought GMG would have used the split Digital One frequencies to have separate programmes in Scotland! Should be feasable! |

Radio 2 obviously see Smooth as a threat - they have told Blackburn that he cannot continue with Smooth weekend breakfast when he starts doing POTP, but he can continue with his other commercial radio shows.

A national marketing campaign from Smooth Radio will begin to run on Monday to promote the relaunch of Smooth Radio, which will become the second largest commercial radio station next week. Guess the station will have overtaken Talksport and Absolute for total listeners?Running for six weeks, the new campaign by newly appointed KLP will run across TV, press and outdoor and depict eight listeners, nicknamed ‘the Smooth Ambassadors’, who reflect the audience of the station. The eight listeners from the brand’s FM regions were chosen from thousands of Smooth listeners who applied to be part of the campaign. The TV ad, with two 30 second executions each featuring four Ambassadors, will be broadcast in the North East, West Midlands and North West through October and November. This will be accompanied by a medium weight outdoor campaign in the North West, East Midlands and Glasgow with each 48 sheet showing a different Ambassador. Press advertising will run in a selection of women’s and national listings titles including Woman’s Own and TV Times. No ads for South England? Looks like the ads might be more aimed at Women! edit radiotoday has more details http://radiotoday.co.uk/news.php?extend.6317 Quote:
The eight listeners from the brand’s FM regions were chosen from a thousand Smooth lovers who applied to be part of the campaign. Each was asked to provide a highlight from their life as well as something interesting they are doing now; i.e. Rachel Cook from the north east once abseiled down the Tyne Bridge and is currently restoring a 1964 scooter, whereas Ann Munn from Glasgow DJ’d at the trendy Fleet Club in Hong King and now designs jewellery. Losing Tony at the weekend will be a blow, but suspect Mike Read's and DLT's managers are on the phone to Smooth!
Nell Bryden forms the soundtrack to the TV ad, with two 30 second versions each featuring four Ambassadors. It will be broadcast in the North East, West Midlands and North West through October and November. Newspaper and press adverts will also feature. GMG Radio Chief Executive Stuart Taylor said: “Smooth’s listeners are passionate about life and music and with a little more money in their pockets than your average commercial radio listener are highly sought after by advertisers. The Ambassadors in this new marketing campaign will have a real affinity with millions across the UK and will no doubt encourage new listeners to give the station a try as it becomes a national brand.” |

What's the point advertising the station in the London ITV region when Rajar in that region has always been poor? Better to spend the money in the core northern regions where the station is more attractive to the target audience.
Will also help Celador as the Breeze is very simular! |

To try and make the Rajar less poor?
Face it, Smooth is a dead duck in London thanks to better targeted radio stations operated by Bauer and Global and even it's new national rival Radio 2. |

GMG have had years to improve the Rajar in London with ad campaigns with no success. They've even decided to sell their local DAB slot to a French station where they could've launched Rock Radio.

Certainly in London at least, however time will tell if Smooth can maintain it's audience in it's northern heartlands, particularly in the North West, where it's the leading regional station.
Where along with all but one of the other Smooth's, it's about to lose its regionality. |

Somewhere in another thread, I was arguing that GMG should not exactly give up on London, but pay it less attention, due to the strength of Magic. It seems that's exactly what they're doing.
My guess is they won't promote in London until they have a product they are happy with. |
