I don’t think JM would programme a station that way if it was his choice but I guess he knows it’s just the way its become.

On a personal note, I don’t think the Smooth WM is so bad, I think London lose out with Castle, who as a tennis commentator could send a glass eye to sleep………”

It's funny you should say that, as I tended to think that a lot of taxi drivers (as well as hearing the music) also liked to hear (and have) a bit of 'banter' with DJs, like a lot of truck drivers I've heard too. This is what I love to hear, I just feel it adds something rather than 'interfering' with the music. I can appreciate however that 'music only' radio can be what some people want when they're working and they just want it on in the 'background' (depending on what job you do I guess).

Sadly, not many stations around now where you get that banter, DJ/listener interaction apart from maybe BBC local stations.

Indeed, I suppose something like a barber shop or a factory where you can’t really hear what’s being said then a low speech content is what you want. I probably fall somewhere between the two, I like some speech on music programmes but not just for the sake of it. When it becomes “DJ waffle” it can be nauseating. BBC Local is fine for a while, but often falls into interviewing local councillors about pot holes, which is not really my thing.
Magic AM in the north pretty much nail it for me, but then that’s my taste

Yeah, agree there, you do have to pick and choose with BBC local depends on the content and presenter of course. I think it really works though when you do get a radio DJ/presenter who really connects 'naturally' with their listeners, (rather than 'waffle'), really great to hear, (as well as a great mix of good, quality music too). Definitely getting harder to find, this type radio (good mix of chat, interaction and music).

I was very impressed and touched by Smooth Radio's acknowledgment of the one minute's silence yesterday for the Hillsborough anniversary and the choice of music shortly after.

You can't really miss the ads can you!! They're the all 'important' thing though I guess in commercial radio.

I meant to add earlier that there's not much 'middle ground' now within radio it's either practically all 'music only' stations or speech only (like LBC) which I do listen to sometimes (in shorter bursts) depending on subjects, but then I miss the music too much. I think Smooth (as it was) provided that gap in the market for people who perhaps don't like as much speech as you get with the BBC but just enough to have that 'human' element, but as we've been told this format didn't work (in London), who knows how much or how many people liked it around the country....

Ironically I heard Smooth playing at a great number of decibels in a local garage today the only person on site was a mechanic in his 20's. Not quite the Smooth intended age group?

Did they play He Ain't Heavy He's My Brother? If so, that's very fitting

No, it was imagine by John Lennon - probably chosen because of the Liverpool link. It just made me feel emotional coming straight after the minute's silence.

And yes, I am in the North West so not sure if the silence was national, but I noticed that other stations did not observe it, so well done to Smooth!

I think an instrumental version of He Ain't Heavy was used within their news package

Hmmmm.

Sure he's listed covering for Graham Torrington on the BBC West Midlands Late Show currently?

I'm really pleased that Tony Blackburn is now getting quite a lot of work on BBC Local stations. Sure, his Radio 2 shows pull in much bigger audiences, but I prefer hearing him on BBC local radio (not just cos I love soul music ) but I think you really get to hear his personality more, his warmth really shines through, especially hearing him chatting to his listeners, it just sounds like he's chatting to friends; wonderful to hear, long may he reign!!

On the Smooth website, why does it list all Simon and Garfunkel songs as being by Paul Simon? I'm guessing that it says that Bridge Over Troubled Water is by Art Garfunkel as he sings the vocals for that one

They have quite a lot of dross and dead wood too. What has this gig to do with Smooth?

Isn't it about time the Smooth Facebook page made it clear that the Breakfast Show comments refer to Andrew Castle's version & promote the regional pages.

I had to ask them if there was one for Nigel Freshman!

Yes it would make sense as down South you tend to forget about the regional versions of Smooth. Do they all play the same music at the same time?

His show on Magic is very much like that. It is like a mate sitting chatting and playing some of his favorite records.
