His show on Magic is very much like that. It is like a mate sitting chatting and playing some of his favorite records.
I'll have to try and have a listen to his Magic show online then, I'm down in the south so haven't heard it but have heard a lot of good things about it. Great to know that that 'intimate' feel of radio is not lost completely, Tony really 'gets' that, which you can really hear especially so when he chats to his listeners.

this sort of chokes me but I have to say this. after just returning from 10 days in the Bournemouth area (did you notice I was gone?) I have to admit that despite my disliking Smooth (here in London) it certainly was a darn sight better than the local rubbish that they have to endure. with the exception of Jack FM local Bournemouth Radio should be dropped off the pier.

so, when is the national feed of Smooth going to be replaced with the new station from Global?
Sometime in 2014. That's all we know for certain.

Any chance Global will resurrect the Capital Life name for the new national DAB station?!

Thought not, but it would be great if they did!

Out of the Smooth DJ's, I think Gary King is the best of a bad bunch

And he will be demoted to one show a week when Paul Phear arrives next month.

Also, interesting diverse comments left by a couple of great presenters!

I see even one of the ex-presenters of Smooth (and a great personality jock I might add) thinks of people who don't like the new Smooth (and other stations like it) as 'anoraks', has everyone been brain-washed into thinking this now!? I know there are worst things to be but I'm way too young to even remember the days of radio Caroline. Maybe he's not everyone's cup of tea but I really admire Tony Blackburn for speaking his mind about the current style of most stations: "2o songs in a row and then a time check" "that's not proper radio that's a machine" (as quoted by him in a great piece in the Telegraph - SO true!! But then again I'm not a 'listener' I'm an 'anorak' now apparently, some of these 'listeners' also think that "DJs are boring" - charming!!

No brainwashing,...as Jon points out, his assumptions about what mature listeners want is being gently but persistently proved wrong. Where people are offered an alternative to 'personality' radio, they take it. At least he's big enough (!) to concede that.

I do understand what John's trying to say, it's just this 'anorak' thing again, I don't really get why, previously loyal listeners are now seen in this way and that some presenters think this way too, bit confusing but that's life I guess.

Just to add, I think 'radio purist' as John Myers put it is probably a nicer way to refer to listeners like myself.

Paul Phear takes over from Gary King who's been doing the show since last October from Thursday. Gary will still be on London Smooth on Saturday afternoons.

Be good to have a break from Gary as he sounds so scripted. Paul was brilliant on Magic in London. Where's Carlos gone?

Carlos is on Smooth Drive North West. Gary isn't scripted either.

What's your source that Gary isn't scripted? I'd be interested to know.

But that's what the people of Norfolk want, they have all been tested and they all say they want to hear the travel news for Sussex.

Paul is sounding like he did on Magic. Relaxed, professional and pitching his links perfectly. Already sounds like he has been on Smooth forever despite today being his first day. Worth waiting for him to join.
