unfortunately I don't think it now matters who presents as they are all lifeless robots, without any built in personality. I envy the Radio 1 listeners at least the DJs still have personality not my style but its still there for the target audience.

It's interesting what founder John Myers said in the blog link posted earlier as he sums it up well.

“Global believe that the audience listening to the new Smooth don’t care a jot about what a presenter thinks about life, all they want is a smooth flow of music. It’s a mood station, every day is the same, just like vanilla.
So will this approach work? Well it’s not for me but every time I get into my wife’s car, it’s on. My local hairdressers have switched claiming a desire for more music than DJ prattle (Their words not mine). The local Shell garage has it blasting out where once Metro ruled supreme and just yesterday, very annoyingly, someone I know boasted to me about a new station they’d discovered. Damn it. This has all the signs of being a success but the real measure will be how they do in London.”

Agree with you but unfortunately I am too old to appreciate Radio 1 these days. Smooth is supposed to be for my age group the ones who ironically grew up with personality presenters.

Yep, that's exactly how Soft AC stations are designed to be - consistent and inoffensive - and that's undoubtedly why they do so well in markets worldwide. Often they're a good compromise for listening in a workplace, home or car, because they're the "least worst" station and won't really irritate anyone. For example, I often put Smooth on when I'm with my fiancée, because she doesn't like the more speech-intensive stations that I do and I'm not keen on some of her favourite music stations. We'll both enjoy at least some of the songs on Smooth though, and there are no long links to annoy her.

Yes and as we've heard this 'vanilla' format seems to be loved by millions now, I guess it's a bit of a novelty factor for many at the mo. I wonder if commercial music radio (with a bit of personality) will come full circle again in the way that vinyl has made a bit of a comeback (as a novelty value) for older and indeed younger people. Who knows...

Although I'm a music lover I find myself listening to more speech only radio now, because I'd much rather listen to that than automated music radio.

Apart from Magic's Golden Years at 10am, I've had Smooth on all day in work. It was a nice, relaxed mix of music with a couple of songs I haven't heard for a while. The presentation was fine, Kate talking about her forthcoming birthday and reading out reaction texts. Paul Phear sounded great, as did the guy in for Carlos up here, Paul Hollins. I wouldn't choose to have it on every day as the repetition would sully the good experience, but will stick it on again next week.

Emma B "that was George Benson, Never Give Up On a Good Time"

Don't you mean Never Give Up On a Good Thing?

Paul Hollins is experienced DJ and works out from London most of the time and Smooth Soul Sunday. He's the PD for Blue Revolution and been heard on Heart before.

Are you suggesting she isn't experienced? She's been on bigger and better stations than you fella.

Yes she has, but you yourself will know there are certain tacky phrases you just DO NOT use on air, but, if you're happy with cringeworthy sloppy links, then so be it!

Speaking of sloppy links, I heard Paul Phear the other day reading the usual Facebook messages - yawn! One Facebooker wanted to know how she could listen to the station, Paul read this out and told the Facebooker she could listen online, DAB, FM etc etc., bit of a sloppy link considering she was asking how to listen so wouldn't be able to hear him.

Maybe he never thought about just replying on Facebook.

No, but I've heard quite a few similar mistakes on Smooth. Once, Myleene Klass referred to Louis Armstrong as "Billy Armstrong"

It's a slip of the tongue. Probably got lots of things to do as they run the desk themselves. I don't know if they have producers.

I heard Myleene a couple of weeks back say Fontella Bass as bass (lower frequency pronunciation) I was shocked.

Lets face it she wasn't even born when it was a hit.. Many of the presenters on Smooth now are simply too young for the brand.

I've never been so thankful for BBC local radio, it can be a real lifeline at certain times; extreme weather, travel chaos etc, especially given the lack of local stations in many areas now. I do sometimes dip in and out of LBC (for a change), but as I said on another thread it would be nice if there was a talk station like Talk Radio UK where there was more general talk rather than mainly current affairs/politics etc (as with LBC).

I guess BBC and speech radio is now the only place (on mainstream radio) where you can hear engaging, stimulating radio. Give me rainbow over vanilla any day!

Agree I used to listen to Smooth all the time but my listening is now shared between my local commercial and BBC local, LBC dipping in and out and Magic AM via the net. All of which give me far more listening pleasure than Global Smooth.

Paul Phear and chris Skinner are the best presenters on the station. Anthony Davis and Andrew Castle are a bit wooden. Kate Garraway is surprisingly tolerable.

I must say that it was pretty strange to hear Dream a Little Dream early in the morning a few days ago
