If the BBC chased commercial audiences there would be "hell to pay" from the BBC Trust.

If commercial radio was run like the BBC it wouldn't make any money.

All you've done is highlighted the difference between the BBC and commercial radio. Neither is "dire", it's just you don't like commercial radio in the same way some people don't like the BBC.

I am listening to a commercial radio station now as it happens Magic North. So you are wrong there.

All that shows is that the northern Magic stations (they're not called "Magic North") are more to your taste than Smooth.

My point still stands. You can't criticise Smooth for not sounding like Radio 2 just as you can't criticise Magic for the same reason.

Magic is a station with personality presenters. Smooth is a borefest.

I listened to Magic AM (online) for the first time a couple of weeks ago....all I can say is how different (in a good way) it is to Magic FM in London. There does seem to be more of a wider/more diverse choice of stations in the north compared with here in the south.

Totally agree. Global don't do interesting radio.

....unless you're in the increasing number of people who find it interesting.

What's that ? Smooth is crap, Smooth will loose listeners ?

Arround 500k listeners added and around 20% added to the hours this survey. That's without the full new sound as well.

If so, probably because of the juggling of "Gold"!

And year on year shows a 31.3% reach increase according to Paul Easton - The Smooth management must be climbing over each other to put Amara et al's advice into effect

...and by the way this is the second survey under Global to show healthy increases.

U-turn if you want to, as the saying goes.

Thats just for London which has varied quite a bit up and before and he says

Quote:
“It's worth pointing out that the major changes at Smooth and Gold did not take place until the final week of the survey which means we won't really start to see any effect. However, Smooth has increased Reach from 430,000 to 565,000 year-on-year - an increase of 31.3% - and across weekdays it looks to have pulled itself away from the cluster of stations at the bottom end of the chart.”

So looks like the changes are having effect, the next rajar will give a better picture as the London trend was up and down, if Smooth's listening will continue to rise, as before it would normally go down after a rise?

These are fantastic results for Smooth; including a big jump in London, and now over a million listeners in the North West.

It just goes to show that (as usual) the vocal minority on DS and Facebook really don't reflect the views of typical listeners.

Does those figures reflect in Andrew Castle breakfast in London or departed Simon Bates?

I wonder who's blowing Evans off air in the London / South region?

Exactly. I bet the haters are scratching their heads today as clearly listeners aren't "tuning out in their droves".

That will only affect the network figures. Of course it's easy enough to look at each of the FM areas individually. All but the North East are up quarter on quarter. Reach up for all FM areas year on year from my quick look.

Of course this was an interim period - I'll be interested to see if these figures are maintained/increased for the new sound of Smooth particularly with the Buble advert.

Two good surveys too. Record figures in the North West according to Carlos. He seems pleased https://www.facebook.com/CarlosofSmo...241076424625:0

I will give you that. Actually Andrew Castle is growing on me. Just wish you didn't repeat songs so much.

I think that the RAJAR performance has taken a lot of people by surprise.

I'm not here to Global bash, but I have a geniune question.

How have they managed to pull in such an impressive quarter without marketing, etc due to them being in a period of transition?

Is it as a result of people re-tuning their radios, and coming across the station by accident, liking what they hear, and deciding to stay?

As I say, this is not a criticism of the station, I dip in and out occassionally and have always enjoyed the station before and after the changes.
